When you look into using this style lever to open 2 latches simultaneously, you have 2 options. 1) Look into a bmx gyro cable. Turns 1 cable pull into 2. 2) A specialty lever exists that pulls 2 cables at the same time with 1 handle.

Great use of that latch, I used to love walking around the junkyards thinking how I could repurposed highly engineered parts onto my AMC or Jeep. For the bolt your using for the striker pin, if you can’t find a striker pin that works try to use a shouldered bolt the hardened shoulder will last longer against the latch jaws. I learned that lesson and won’t forget it.

DANG that was what I was trying to convey in my previous comment on EP3 in regards to the tire hoop latching setup you nailed that FO SHO! Fabrication inspiration every time I watch one of your videos. you spoke on getting software for blueprinting part designs you should deff put your time and efforts into that as your work would be beneficial in helping others who may be cant whip something of your caliber up unassisted. also if u you had tutorials on the aforementioned blueprints you would be killing it. would not recommend clogging up this channel with that type of content but deff on a secondary channel, "blueprints/Tutorial - DIRTprints/LIFESTYLEtutorials". you could do some cool stuff with that concept maybe get an actual camera and crew to do all the filming so you can focus on the Fabrication. your "whiteboard/theory time" to the tabletop part layout prior to assembly, then assembled on the project that's the hook that grabs people. all I'm saying is your killing it and you could DEFF expand the DIRT LIFESTYLE brand and continue to be a solid ambassador for the OFF-ROAD community ! keep it coming, Nate !

Love the latch system, function first using what you is available for the best cost. A pick up truck tailgate latch may be a starting point design wise, then re-engineer its basic functionality to your needs for the build it will be incorporated into. I like the "one off" builds, using affordable off the shelf parts to accomplish the task for the build in a fully stocked shop environment, yet the for thought of being able to fix or adjust that latch with just a leatherman or a minimal tool kit.

Firstly kudos for the ingenuity of the second latch design. I am from OZ, the land of murderous corrugated outback roads that kill wheel carriers. I am an mechanical engineer and have seen a lot of failures where designs have differential movement between chassis and body. You will need to keep an eye on cracking of the door, as you have transferred the leverage of the tyre into door. A simple gusset down the face of the RHS and up the tube frame in the plane of the flex would also help.

I should have commented last week... All I was thinking is that the tire needs to be stable when latched. Install a rubber tire bumper from a Wrangler tailgate into the top of the hatch, and have a gently arching “leg,” made from bent tube that is welded at the top of the tire carrier, make contact on the rubber bumper when the tire carrier is closed. Simple. Easy. Takes only one tube from an experienced fabricator. And will be VERY secure when closed, meaning no wiggles, or movement while going down the road.

Well done Matt. That third mount was the best and strongest choice for sure. I really like the simplicity of that table too. When I get to the tire carrier on my Jeep I'll borrow a lot from this design. I may explore using junkyard tailgate latches at both locations and see if I can use the tailgate handle (or smaller lift handle) in the middle of the tire mount to activate them. I may try using the tailgate linkage instead of cables too. One thing's for sure, I won't finish it as quickly as you have!

I'm a bit late to the party on the tire carrier wiggle issue, and it sounds like you've already figured something out. Just the same I'd like to recommend a modification of the through hole method you addressed in the video. Drill the hole all the way through the entire square section (top and bottom), then weld the top and bottom on the outside of the square section. Beveling the holes would add more strength. This would spread the forces across double the material, and provide some (maybe significant) wiggle reduction. Otherwise, I've enjoyed watching your problem solving. Well made!

A suggestion for future improvement to cable latch would be to run cable internal. You can run this one into your tube mount, or at very least you can clean it up but running up the tube externally rather than dropping straight down from the latch. I think you have room to do that without making any sharp curves.

Nothing I can say about the Disco build or fabrication aspect of the build that hasn't already been said but what quenches my thirst is what's going on behind the scenes. I find myself trying to figure out...what lens/filter is he using. Shutter speed/iso settings to capture welding clips. I'm basically a Jeep geek & a photo/videography tech junkie & this channel is, 2 birds 1 stone. As far as the Q&A...100% Team DJI, their whole ecosystem of action cams, gimbals & drones is all I need. IMO, the footage is just a better foundation to work with in post.
