Gotta respectfully disagree about Kapa o Pango. Te Raupraha's "Ka Mate" haka has rugby history, but there is a deeper history behind it. Te Raupraha was hiding from his enemies in a hole in the ground when he muttered "Ka mate, ka mate, ka ora, ka ora" (I may live, I may die) and this Haka had it's genesis. The new haka was comissioned as a unifying haka for all NZ, not just Ngati Toa. I'm no Kapa Haka expert or historian, but I reckon that the New Haka is more relevant, if not traditional.

I remember a game the All black decided they would do the haka in the changing rooms in stead of on the field because of all the complaining that was going on...All that the other team succeeded in doing was pissing off the 60 thousand strong crowd that missed out on seeing it and getting bashed by the All Blacks by 50 points. .I guess my point is it go's deeper then you will ever understand and if you don't get it ...you never will!

As a Sourh african I can proudly say that we are the only rugby playing nation that can contend with the all blacks consistently year after year. We are the only team that can not only face the haka with the utmost respect but accept the challenge and win. But I will say that the all blacks consistently produce the best players ever to play the game...Ritchie Macaw, Dan Carter, Andrew Mertins, Christian Cullen, Doug Howlette, Kerian Reid, Justin Marshall the list goes on...but. 1. All Blacks 2. South Africa 3. Wales 4. Australia 5. England..... in my opinion. I also think South Africa have the best chance of winning the next world cup, coming from a kiwi. They have alot of good talent coming through in key positions and a new coach who seems to be doing a great job. Current All Blacks are good but are not taking enough risks by picking on form players and Hansen has to strong a relationship with current senior All Blacks which is blurring his selections I believe.

Australia are far from the top 3 now. England, Wales, New Zealand and South Africa are all better than Australia. The All Blacks have been beaten by England several times lol. Australia may have been top dog before, bot not now. There's a reason why bookies keep the odds in England's favour; they know they're more likely to win and don't want to lose as much money. Keep up with the times you pleb, the top 3 are: 1.) New Zealand 2.) South Africa 3.) England

I have experience in both American Football and Rugby (Lived in Liverpool for 2 years) and while I adore both sports and think they're 2 of the best sports in the world... The more brutal and punishing sport IS American football, I've taken some shots in rugby, but none that come close to the bone crushing shots you take in American Football. When you get hit with those shoulder pads in the ribs, it's a pain like you've never felt before. Both sports are amazing none the less.

Having to repeat myself for the special one, as he cannot read effectively. You said England are over rated as they were beaten by Wales who are under England. With your logic, that means New Zealand are over rated as they were beaten by England, who are under. Ergo, Wales > New Zealand with your theory. And with your pathetic theory, you're trying to say England are 7th. It's astonishing how low one person's IQ can go.
@SebCharnock

Yep, it's not un-common. It's definitely been reduced ever since shoulder charging stopped but that's not completely gotten rid of it. It even happens in lower schools i.e. I got concussion from playing a game of Rugby where someone hit the side of my head at the temple as I went for the tri. That wouldn't happen in AF for obvious reasons (helmet and method of scoring). Also, I recall this one guy getting his scrotum ripped in rugby. It definitely is not softer than AF.
@popeignatius
11 жыл бұрын
Actually, Rugby is the more dangerous sport. Without the same protection, where the hits deliver are where the hits hurt. If you get hit in the side, its easier to break a rib, since the force isnt dissipated over protective padding. In scrums, where the hooker remains suspended, if a scrum breaks up the wrong way, the hooker could fall and break his neck. There are plenty more ways of getting hurt in a sport than muscular men. And rugby has just as many muscular men as football does.

Give your opinion to Manu Tuilagi and Ma'a Nonu. See what they think of it. Your hardest men like Ray Lewis and Rob Gronkowski would shit themselves seeing someone like Nonu, Tuilagi, or Chabal running at them. Tatoo covered Maori and cavemen vs unfit guys in padding? Yeah... NFL guys would be reduced to tears facing rugby players. I feel sorry for Obama - he has to lead your sorry arse, doesn't he?

I am only thirteen and I have been playing rugby for 6/7 years. I think i've seen one boy i've played against break his neck! In rugby you have to play the whole game making important tackles with out much padding below the neck which is harder you can't just jump on their backs and ride them like you ride the excuse of helping us in ww2. Also after every tackle you get back on your feet and contest the ball you don't get a break every tackle and you don't get quarters and time outs just 2 halfs

Rugby is a mentally and physically intense sport I mean watch the video. I don't see any NFL players smashing through defenses or sprint don't the field with intense pace. Rugby players play for the sheer joy and spirit for their country not for the money like the pansies in NFL. Look at the teams they are there because they are honored and lucky enough to play for their country not for million dollar contracts. Don't underestimate Rugby...

i love how you brought ww2 into the conversation as if you nothing else to say and no USA did not choose to go in a save any European country, they were dragged into the war. Well enough about that, but i think that rugby is a lot harder than NFL not due to the fact that there is no padding but the fact that it takes much more skill then football. I have played both sports and love both. This is just my opinion.
@TheStuckMillennial

Ok I'm only going to say this once: NFL hits are harder because every player can overcommit because once the Receiver or Runner hits the ground thats' it. The ref blows the whistle. In Rugby as soon as you tackle someone, ideally you get back on your feet to contest the ball or if your an attacking player going forward then you have to recycle the ball through the ruck. Its ridiculous to argue about the two codes. The tackling parts in both sports are not synonymous. You can't compare the two.

I'm American and I love football, I played in high school and I play in college. and i have played rugby as well. But rugby is definitely harder hitting than football. They are DEFINITELY more conditioned than a football player because it is basically a non stop game of football played on a soccer field with no pauses. NOT EVEN FOR INJURIES. and as you already can see, no padding. I will always love football but Rugby is just more intense hands down. and wtf does WW2 have to do with anything?

I have played American Football for 5 years and Rugby since I was 10. They are both quality sports, and require different kinds of strength. Rugby requires fitness for non-stop sport, American football requires explosive power with stops every ten seconds. They both hurt a lot. I prefer rugby as I have played it for longer but they are both a lot better than football (soccer), and the Americans have it right in making it a women's sport!

Actually Ngata for Baltimore's defense played rugby. Dhani Jones traveled the world playing different sports, know what he said the hardest sport was out of all of them? Rugby. So rugby players do play football and they destroy people, when football players try to play rugby they say it's the hardest sport in the world. Go eat a cheeseburger and watch grown men grab each other and then pretend it's a sport.

A single scrum can produce 3,000 pounds of force. Nothing in the NFL produces that much force. Also even sensible Americans admit that rugby is the most dangerous team sport in the world. Where did you pull this obscure "fact" from , "1 nfl game is the equivalent to three car crashes."? If it is true, it would be the like being in a car crash in a rally car which has every single sort of protection inside it e.g Roll cage etc.
@Rukhage

That's because the plays are whistled dead once the player's on the ground. So NFL players can overcommit to their tackles. Do that in rugby and you just leave a gigantic gap in the defense. Keep in mind that rugby is more like Iron Man football, you have to play defense and offense at a moments notice. No one denies that the hits in the NFL are harder, but keep in mind that you have specialized players for exactly that role. A rugby player has to be able to do everything ingame.
@CaptJofaz

No, pads would not become mandatory lol rugby's been around for ages you think no one big has ever played it? Firstly he wouldn't be able to keep up with the other players because he's used to having a break every 10 seconds. Secondly his wild leaps would be worthless in rugby because it's about technique. A good rugby player can tackle a player much bigger than they are. He wouldn't be able to break any tackles and would be on the ground before he could start running.
@michaellinehan710

There aren't many injuries in rugby because we're smarter in rugby, the defenders have to get back up quickly after a hit, be ready to make more in quick succession and try to reclaim possession. In rugby we tackle smart, because we don't think we're invincible. In the NFL you don't tackle, you hit them. In rugby you tackle, and are more efficient in doing so. And no, not every tackle in the NFL would end a career, most wouldn't even be made in rugby because our players know how to dodge idiots.

That beast is Jonah Lomu. Check him out playing in the 1995 World Cup against England, not only does he run around you, he runs over you! He was about 120kg and could run a 10.2s 100m. Sadly kidney failures shortened his career drastically, but still a rugby legend! Though in that particular clip he was playing for Barbarians RC, an invitational side instead of his usual All Blacks team.

All this comparison between Rugby and American Football, having played both for 10+ years, just wanna add that in Rugby when someone goes hard for you they go hard but fair, in Football, perhaps cos of the padding and helmets, people can hide behind that and try to hurt you cowardly, the padding removes them too far from the man vs man contest. Enjoy both sports tho guys, whichever you like best!

Current players are not suing, ex players are. It's like talking about old Rugby teams from years ago, nobody gives a shit if they're the ones bitching, current NFL players do NOT bitch, half of them could easily catch on and play rugby, American Football takes long hours of memorizing different schemes and plays and exercising in full body pads. I played rugby when I was younger and lived in Australia, I play American Footy as a D-End now, but I do give credit to Rugby, you have to be tough.
@michaellinehan710

Um, no. Ray Lewis doesn't tackle, he launches. He'd be banned for life from rugby within minutes. Rugby doesn't need pads because we tackle properly and safely, we enforce mouthguards to get rid of concussions, and have to ruck in the breakdown, where pads would just ruin the play. Footballers feel like gods with their pads on, and think they're unbreakable, thus SIS and Dementia occurring among football players. How many rugby players have had post-career mental problems?
@michaellinehan710

What's even more amazing is that this was YEARS after his prime. 1995 was when Jonah was at his best, but this was 6 years later. He's big, he's fast and knows how to find a gap when it doesn't exist. For some reason people try to tackle him high into the body, but that doesn't work against a ridiculously fast 120kg brute like Jonah. But then again, his legs are moving so fast that it's pretty hard to get to them too!

i always get the chills when the allblacks do the haka. Haka is a traditional ancestral war cry, dance or challenge from the Māori people of New Zealand. It is a posture dance performed by a group, with vigorous movements and stamping of the feet with rhythmically shouted accompaniment. The New Zealand rugby team's practice of performing a haka before their matches has made the dance more widely known around the world.

IRB Rankings mean nothing; they are average ratings from a selective committee who decide the strength of a team and olden matches. Australia WERE better than England, and so they had a much much higher win rate, but that's dropped massively now. Since the year 2000, England have won the majority of their games against Australia. Times have changed.
@SebCharnock

With that logic, teams such as Liverpool are 'better' than teams such as Juventus as the EPL is ranked higher than Seria A (Excuse me for changing the sports around, but it is to use a different scenario with the same logic and showing how it doesn't work). England would beat Australia in rugby a good 4 times out of 5.

Amen to this. I played No. 2 (Hooker) for my Rugby Union team and I remember the scrum collapsed at one point when it was their scrum. However, the other team's hooker ended up with a shattered collarbone and slight concussion.

As a rugby and football player from England, Ray lewis is someone that all should look up to. What sets him apart in the NFL is that he does wrap up in almost all his tackles, it's why you don't see him miss with mere shoulder pops as seen a lot in football. I don't think his presence would mean pads in rugby, by any means, but I seriously doubt he'd be banned either.

It's a sport played with a lot of ball on ground, and metal sprigs. You're gonna get rucked, and you're gonna get cut by the sprigs. Cuts don't often happen in tackles, all that ever happens is breakages (unless it's the nose, usually no blood) or head knocks. But those only happen to those who don't learn to tackle properly.

So you want me to believe you over the IRB in you saying that England are somehow better than Australia? No way in hell are England better than Australia, I don't know why you think your point is valid.

Rugby Union is rougher than Rugby League lol. Ever heard of the scrum? It's also much more demanding as Rugby League is stop and start (like American Football) as opposed to continuous Rugby Union.

my rugby favourites run harder than the average NFL Star,40 minutes at a time;when you respond like you have it doesn't serve either code "both sports have admirable qualities" agree and move on.....

Compare your NFL to school boy rugby.... Don't even bother comparing it to Southern Hemisphere Rugby. I can't stand you bloody Aussies and New Zealanders but along with SA, our rugby is on another level!

Finally a balls out rugby video that isn't just a string of illegal tackles. Only way to improve it would be to use less well known music and have some more vicious scrums thrown in. Well done mate.

I was watching sports one day, and a sport came on that looked a lot like rugby, but it was on a circular field, and they weren't doing the exact same ball movements. Does anyone know what I was watching?

They still only pay for 8 seconds at a time, maybe you should read the NFL rulebook about unlimited subsitutions. After 15 minuted maximum on the Rugby field, any DE is going to be sucking on oxygen.

Actually, England is miles ahead of Australia now. The top 3 go New Zealand, South Africa and England. Even then, it's been a close battle between the top 3. England recently beat NZ.

Ok, I see a lot of ignorant Americans in this comment section. I would just like to say, on behalf of the good Americans, I apologize for my... as much as I hate to say it, countrymen.

umm, Canada had to save the usa's butt so I don't think that your point is very good. Btw, we are talking about actual rugby and football...not the timbit's crap you are referring to.

these men have to earn a living besides playing rugby sometimes, but NFL like football is way over payed i like rugby but if you are going to compare NFL to anything it should be AFL

No, it doesn't... nowhere in the nfl will you see an entire team of players capable of catching, running and passing the ball... Heck a team in NFL only needs one player to do that.
