Just FYI all, anyone new to weight training should not be starting with 60-70kg squatting. Start with the bar and slowly add weight 10kg or so at a time (so 5kg each side) and gauge how you're feeling whilst ensuring you are maintaining good form (the most critical part! do not squat more weight if your form breaks down as a result, you WILL get injured!)
@liamzimmermann1
6 жыл бұрын
Even that's pretty fast for increasing weight, I'd start with the bar, up it by 10kg, absolute maximum, till you hit maybe 40kg, then up it by 5kg till you hit 60, then up it by 2.5kg. By the way, you can still get stronger even when the weight doesn't feel heavy.
@risingdawn5788
6 жыл бұрын
Yep technique is the most important thing to get right from the start before you start adding weight, it's really quite a technical lift, and individual specific. I'd imagine explosive squatting would have great results for sprinting on the bike!
@MrACangusyoungDC
5 жыл бұрын
@@risingdawn5788 that's what I do. I pick a weight that I can lift 12-15 times as max then do 6-8 explosive reps at that for 3 sets 1 time per week. I mean really explosive; grunting and all. I progress steadily at the same time as my legs stay fresh enough for cycling. The freshness depends very much on that I am used to squatting. Beginners should have even lighter weights if they want to stay fresh. Training 2 times a week means that you can train at lighter weights and still progress as much or, in most cases, even more and still have fresh legs For me, this season is at around 95kg right now, and I don't really know if get too big legs soon. I would like to to know what Kittel, Cav, Greipel, Kristoff and Sagan lift as maximum and if they ever stop the progression by choice. I would guess it varies greatly but I wouldn't want to be lifting more than Kittel
@MrACangusyoungDC
5 жыл бұрын
@@risingdawn5788 On the technical aspects: I'd say it's very hard to have perfect form in weight training, especially squatting, but it is easy to have decent form, and as a cyclist you will not need anything better than decent form as you should struggle to keep your legs fresh for cycling and don't need lift close to failure. According to Mattias Reck, pro trainer of Trek Segafredo (and Giant Alpecin before that), every type of rider seems to get benefits from weight training of some sorts. So one shouldn't be afraid to try it out. Furthermore he thinks explosive sprint/jump training off the bike could be great to apply to any type of rider's scheme at least some time of the year. Great for bone health.
@msheron

I agree. However, for those who do lift, 70 kg’s is light. My routine was about twice that and leg pressing routinely 1400 lbs. for sets. But I grew up lifting free weights and playing baseball and this was normal.
@phil3038
3 жыл бұрын
Having both trained in the gym for strength, and then changed over to cycling, and back to weights, I put on so much more muscle size from cycling alone than weight training. But now I've combined them both I'm stronger at the squat and faster on the bike than I've ever been. Cycling rocks for massive legs 😂

For a person that has been subscribed since the start you get another perspective. For example they released a quick bike washing video recently. You can find at least two quick wash videos and a longer one. How to prepare for different races is another good example, we got numerous samey videos like that.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzitem.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

If he's looking to not add mass, he should be going for higher weight and fewer reps. An 8-10 rep set is very likely to build mass, unless that weight is nothing for him. I would think at the beginning of the season you want to gain power, so you should do heavy sets of 3. Then as the season goes on, do some more balanced lifting to maintain that strength during the season.
