Bahamas Bound tomorrow! Epic Tarpon Video filmed yesterday lost an absolute GIANT, HUGE Apparel launch soon. Lots of things to come! Stay Tuned!!!!! Yes Barracuda can be HIGHLY Toxic, but the chances of a smaller fish such as the one harvested in this video poses little risk. Most reef fish including snapper can contain Ciguatera! Don't knock it till you try out and always remember... "Theres no such thing as trash fish, just trash cooks"

@Guerilla Gaming: this is even more true to fatty fish, as the metal is agglomerating in the fatty tissue. Therefore the worldwide beloved salmon is way more toxic in this concern. Ciguatera is another story, I can't tell for that for sure. But it's generally true that all big predator fish living close to coral reefs bear this threat. (As the poison comes from algea on coral reefs. Therefore snappers for instance are affected just the same way as cudas are)

I read that barracuda is actually toxic due to a poisonous algae or enzyme in their system but that goes for most of reef fish. I still feel that in reality, it’s safe to eat and people over react and the trend “trash fish” ends up spreading and people just jump on the bandwagon. Great video👍👍👍

Barracuda is good eating, ive also had Bonito.. I like them.. i guess people just are unaware.. Never heard of them as being called trash fish. Open ocean great barracuda tend to have the possibility of ciguatera or mercury(as i understand). i have seen the def of ciguatera on the web and i could see how it could reach reef fish... However i have been aware of cig , and i have been spearfishing and fishing these since before the definition appeared on the web.Envision how a predator fish eventually becomes contaminated by eating smaller contaminated fish.. So it would be a big mature fish. Good channel

In Jamaica we eat barracuda often. Usually only the smaller ones, but check the teeth, if they’re discoloured, discard it, if not, leave some on an ants nest, if the ants eat it, it’s safe. That test works for everything with a risk of ciguatera

barracudas or rumpi as what we call them locally is a common fish here in the southern part of Philippines. It's one of my favorite fish actually. We love barracuda fishing and the people on the islands were always happy when we gave them our catch. I did worry about Ciguatera fish poisoning, but the locals didn't care. They even cooked the fish for us and it was amazing. Do you ever worry about Ciguatera fish poisoning and how do you test the meat. I've heard that if you leave a piece of meat out and the ants and bugs feed on it, it also safe for human consumption. What do you think?

Sorry but partially wrong...there are certain species that are prone to Ciguatera in a higher degree! Greater Ambejack, barracuda, eel-morey, Cubera snapper, are in top of the list. Although it seems that location also affect the concentration of ciguatoxin by species, which explains why in FL is very low the occurrence of this toxin, kind of what you state.

Glad to see white people finally catching up to the idea of eating everything that's available instead of focusing on only a few specific kinds of fish, haha. Most parts of the world have been doing this since, well, forever. Eat your local fish and stop buying cod, flounder and halibut, you're on the right path to sustainable fishery. Keep up the good work buddy. A couple suggestions if you don't mind: #1, ALWAYS, always bleed your fish if you intend to eat it, simply stick your finger upwards the gill and separate the membrane between the gills and the spine, then break the main blood vessel. Put the fish in a bucket of sea water for a few minutes before putting on ice. Be sure NOT to put your fingers in between the gills or you may get you fingers stuck in there. Sticking something sharp in the brain before bleeding to kill the fish more humanly is a plus, but you don't have to do it since the bleeding will kill the fish pretty fast. #2, try to utilize other parts of the fish, the meat is not the only valuable part of a fish. Try cleaning out the head and collars to make soup etc. I have learned a good amount of knowledge about fishing and eating fish over the years, but I'm too lazy to do my own videos. I'm hoping that you will notice this comment and pass the info and knowledge to your fans. Mark

@@mlywowoYa and they also do the a lot of the damage to it.. I'm talking about the whole "sustainable" thing such as most of the over fishing of stuff like tuna.. Of course people on an mainland island are going to eat more variety of fish. Just sayin, I don't think the "rest of the world" is necessarily doing this.. Ya, white people eat a lot of cod/halibut/pollock/salmon/trout ect - Those ARE their local fish in most cases in northern climates where most of them live in the world lol.. I guess black people in the U.S eat a lot of catfish and Hispanic people eat a lot of Talapia too. Who cares, it aint a white thing.

@chao2609
6 жыл бұрын
All fish have certain levels of mercury in them, but levels vary drastically and the apex predators tend to hold the most because the mercury accumulates in the body as it moves up the foodchain. Weekly recommendations for stuff like tuna usually gives a maximum intake of around 2 cans a week where the tuna has around 0.300 ppm. Everyone knows about marlin and shark being pretty bad of course; their mercury content is above 1 ppm which is pretty damn high. Barracuda have around the same ppm as marlin and shark, so it's certainly not something you'd want to eat very often. I'd be more concerned however with the sashimi. Outside of Japan (where the population have a much higher tolerance) almost all fish should be frozen for -31F (-35c) for 15 hours or -4F (-20c) for 7 days to kill parasites. Just because it is fresh out of the sea does not mean it is fine to eat raw straight away.

I've heard that Barracudas possess in their anatomy a lot of what are called cigueratoxins, the residual poisons present in their flesh as a result of their diet of other toxic marine life that their bodies can tolerate better than our own, and that they tend to possess this toxin in higher amounts than other predatory species that people catch and eat which is why it's recommended to avoid eating. Has this ever been a concern for you or have you ever felt sick after eating them? Symptoms of the cigueratoxins are broad but have been more notorious for causing people to experience damaged and laconic memory in addition to confusing their sense of hot and cold if not all together being desensitized to them. Curious what your experience has been eating this animal and how often you eat them.

I was free diving & spearfishing w/ a Japanese friend of mine in Kauai, he took a few cuda a bit bigger than the one you caught; his mom made Sashimi out of them for the family, it was really good, along w/ some urchin we got... Ciguatera is caused by toxins that are the result of fish that eat a certain micro algae; or fish that eat species that eat the same micro algae when it is in bloom; this micro algae is very common within the coral reefs in the gulf of Mexico & the Florida Atlantic coastline. The neuro toxins from this micro algae concentrate within the stomach, liver & kidneys of reef fish & their predators, being extremely careful when gutting such species can save your ass, ciguatera can make you super sick, bad cases can last for weeks; but usually only 2-5 days; still, you don't want this.

Up here on the Pacific Coast, there is a small species of Shark, called "Dog Fish!" There is a general attitude that they are Trash Fish and not worth the attention. I remember as a child, that many misinformed Fishermen, often did horrible things to them! I remember watching a show that was a catch and cook about dogfish. I talked Dad into skinning and cooking them. The meat sat in salted water for 24 hours then he battered and deep fried them! Man they were awesome! The government recommends we don't eat them over 24 inches due to the slow growth rate and tendency to accumulate natural occurring mercury. The fish is great eating! I never pass up one or two. Funny how people will believe what they hear!

I was in Barbados on a surf trip and after a good surf went to a beach side restaurant and had the barracuda. It was 10/10 so delicious I think it was served with something like cooked nectarine I can’t recall but that fish was so white and yummy I wish I could go back just for the meal!

As a Bahamian I’m very disappointed in the way you cooked and seasoned that fish lmao ain’t no way you ain’t used a pepper to Mash the habaneros salt and garlic to make a seasoning rub after you marinade them in lime or mojo 😂

Lol that's not salad dressing though, that's homemade authentic Tsatziki! Usually goes with souvlakis...

In my opinion.....one of the tastiest fish in the sea . I prefer them under 5 pounds. Used to comb the grassflats while spearfishing...in search of juveniles. Soooooo good. Nothing wrong with recipes....but I prefer only butter and garlic.....or beer batter.

I noticed your father and grandmother have accents, what nationality are you, if you don't mind me asking? I'm Polish, and judging by the accents, and the fact that your name is Viktor, I would guess maybe Russian or Ukrainian, but judging by your appearance, I'm inclined to say maybe bulgarian, or perhaps Serbian or Bosnian. Am I right, or even close?

Greatest cig case in fla was from hogfish caught in the D.T's. All fish were speared, sold to the market. This happened sometime during 1988 to about 1990.

cook the whole fish after scaling them & removing their guts/innards. Please do NOT waste it's flesh by cutting it like that(fillet style). Plus whenever i watch you cut the bloodline off, you tend to also Scrape Off huge portions of the NON-blood-tainted flesh that is just below the bloodline flesh. Please Avoid that bro.

That second loss, you should have tried to let the fish run and wear it out. You gave it no room to move
