Don't really see the advantage of 4 little wheels instead of one big shaft seems a bit inefficient.

the resaons are the costs for the gearbox., which usually amounts to 35-40% of the total cost f the installation. Even a 10 kW gearbox with the approrpriste torque, gear ratio and lifespan costs around 15k Euros, so the small wheels give a big costa dvantage

Irrigation canals only flow for part of the year.

yes, bt that depends. The canals in PK flow for 11 months, some canals in France only for five

In PK they flow for 11 months, in other coutries sometimes only 4. That needs to be taken into account, But rmemeber, the flow volume in the canals does not vary as much as the flow in rofers by a large factor. so pwoer produciton is possible for the time when the cnal flows. Then it is a matter of how much the installation costs, and how much power is produced.

Hmmm, I’m thinking you are right. I was hoping he was going to say direct drive magnets built into the wheel but thinking he was going to say V belt drives. Friction drive on a wet surface extracting 9kW from 90rpm….

@@guygillmore2970in any environment exposure. Dust, water, algae water will get into it. I'd just opt for an enclosed gear solution. Make it durable and long lasting. When it breaks down nobody will care.

they are working on railways.. and even if the whel have to be replaced, the costs are small compared to a gearbox

@@guygillmore2970 the numbers say that it is possible. The friciton factor for wet steel on steel contact is 0.3, thats well known from railway design. This alows for sufficient force transfer

@@geraldmueller1there are different types og gearboxes and different qualities. However a rail system doesn't sound cheap vs gears. Unless so crude that i will start questioning quality and performance. Gears aren't really that expensive in themselves unless you go for custom options. Just standard options make them fit with minimum custom design. I mean this sounds more like a diy-project for the guy who wants who wants to do everything from scratch. Not really ambitious enough.

The friction losts will make it a poor design. You must use full drop of elevation. With a direct drive to a DC generator. To a solid state converter to ac. Low flow plus small elevation equals low output. Paddle wheel has never worked. Think vertical not horizontal shaft.

The friction loss factor in a railway wheel is 0.01. For our case, with a weight of the wheel of 1500 kg / 15 kN and a tangential wheel speed of 3 m/s the loss is 0.45 kW for a power out of 9 kW. I think that friction losses are acceptable when compared with gearbox costs.

as far as i know, the system is driven by gravity only. In any case, the available hydropower so far was wasted and with a waterwheel we can recover that energy..

@@geraldmueller1 I was being sarcastic. But as an aside, no..the gravitational potential energy stored in the water is not "all wasted". A great deal of it is used to actually move the water across the landscape in a predictable way. No such thing as free energy.
