Faye and Chloe are two friends excited at the prospect of shooting their first film, dreaming up a creative, interesting project one evening. But the reality of filmmaking is an entirely different beast altogether, and neither Chloe nor Faye anticipated how complicated it would be juggling logistics and personalities -- including their own.
Amid the forgotten equipment, head-pounding hangovers and frayed nerves, the two friends also reveal their fundamental differences as people, with one woman more serious and responsible and the other woman as more of a free spirit. As the production falls apart, it spins out of control and rocks a seemingly solid and fun friendship.
Directed by Bianca Poletti from a script written by Allison Goldfarb, who also plays Faye, this stylishly offbeat buddy comedy short uses the situation of a film shoot going awry to explore the dynamic of friendship among two women. Shot with a golden, 70s-style naturalism that captures the laidback amiability of California and a brisk sense of pacing, much of the humor comes from the many parts of filmmaking going badly, thanks to a dysfunctional clash of personalities and miscommunications. But the tone is less high-stakes suspense and more shambolic and plateresque, making for an amiably bumbling ride.
It would be a mistake to see the film's charmingly messy and sometimes hapless main characters as an indication of its overall quality, but the story's twists and turns and the sharp dialogue reveal a foundation of slyly accomplished writing, in the same vein as a Paul Thomas Anderson comedy. The characters are keenly drawn, brought to life by natural, pitch-perfect performances by actors Goldfarb and Kate Hollowell as Faye and Chloe, respectively. They both seem of a similar ilk and milieu -- young Angelenos, slightly aimless but with creative impulses -- but the storytelling quickly hones in on their differences. Faye is more tightly wound and deadly serious, and she's increasingly exasperated with Chloe's lack of attention to detail and distractibility, especially by the men renting or lending their equipment.
It's no surprise when these differences widen throughout the film shoot, especially as the mishaps and mistakes pile up into a veritable trainwreck. Tensions come to a head, and so does the built-up irritation, resentment and hangover headache, making for a collision that's more dramatic than anything Faye or Chloe ever planned for. But sometimes magic can be eked out of the wreckage, leading to moments that capture that initial spark of creativity and inspiration.
