I was thinking the exact same thing. Plug in Supply builds a nice Lithium pack, but I was thinking a hybrid pack. Remember the Prius is nominal around 250v. This array being built it 60 caps at 2.5v each, which is 150v, and would need 100 caps. Also remember, these caps hold a small fraction of the current needed, but these caps would make a nice buffer though, if everything didn't weigh a ton. The PIS pack is ~300lbs.

Also in the about me of this movie it states that they have been integrating into custom modules which will probably explain why cost was not really mentioned. The bank would be made to custom fit the application it will be used for. The cost has to be somewhat calculated yet they could tell you a ballpark figure probably.

Capacitors have very little internal resistance which means they can discharge all there energy, very very quickly and with very high current. Batteries (of any kind) have a much higher internal resistance which limits the maximum current flow, meaning that although they can store more energy, they're useless when you need a large amount of energy very quickly.

Konstantinos Kostis They're not meant to replace chemical batteries because as you point out they have much worse energy density. They're supplements to provide much higher peak powers and also to accept high power during regenerative braking when the main battery is nearly full. And they do this with a much longer cycle life. That's why these things are being applied in electric and hybrid buses, because they stop so frequently. They could also be used in subways when the power company doesn't want you feeding power back into the grid.
@keithreynolds7740

Konstantinos Kostis "Does not look like an alternative for cars." How about drag racing. One wouldnt need 85kwh for a dragster. When it comes to drag racing, whats more important is how quick you can use energy for a given weight rather than total energy capacity.
@philkarn5661
10 жыл бұрын
Keith Reynolds Some electric drag racers already blow away those powered by internal combustion engines (ICEs). The high energy density fuels give them good endurance, but ICEs are inherently limited in peak power output by 1) the energy in each kg of fuel/air mixture, 2) the amount you can draw into each cylinder and 3) the rate at which you can do it. To increase (1) you use exotic fuels like nitromethane and nitrous oxide. To increase (2) you increase the displacement and use turbocharging. To increase (3) you use more cylinders and run the engine at a higher speed. All approaches are difficult, costly and often severely impair engine reliability. Unlike the ICE, electric motors have no well-defined limits on peak power. It's only limited by heat buildup, and given their much higher efficiencies that already gives them an advantage. With their thermal inertia they can operate at extremely high peak powers for short periods. All you then need is a way to provide an extremely large power for a very short time, and ultracaps are ideal for this. Basically, once you go electric with a drag racer, motor power is no longer your biggest problem. Keeping the tires on the pavement is your biggest problem. Use a linear induction motor (which eliminates traction problems) and your next limit probably becomes the g-forces that the driver can survive.

Some explanations in the video would be usefull. I don't get it why they do connect capacitors with such a thin wire - won't that eliminate using that capacitors for high current / fast discharge applications? I can see, that caps are connected four in series, and I guess that then they go parralel. It gives about 11V in output. That's not much of a voltage, and together with those thin wires, when it cannot transfer quick, high currents, what are they for? I don't see where are connectors from those black blocks. It would be nice to show that in video :) Greets.
@valordk
10 жыл бұрын
I think those wires are going into the voltage divider made up of 5-10watt ceramic resistors (at 3:01)...this will ensure that the capacitors in the series are voltage-balanced (preventing any single cap from going over 2.7v in a long term). But you are right, what we cant see is the heavy wiring/plates for the output.

@JamesdeChrist

Vastly more than you could count. It depends entirely upon the engineering, materials used and other factors. Some are using capacitors in place of automobile batteries with great success. There is so much yet to be discovered but first we must stop this fantasy that everything comes from random events. How can you only want to hover?
@Justwantahover
8 жыл бұрын
+James de Christ And vastly more recharges with supercapitors, than with lithium ion batteries, I suppose. Super capacitors start cars cos they don't need to last long. But I bet you would need a thousand plus of the largest capacitors to make a 70,000 watt hoverbooard go longer than ten seconds. That's my guess. About God. I'm agnostic and don't know for certain if there is a god or not (and don't care, cos there is nothing I can do about it). But the geological columns is evidence enough for me to know evolution is true. The geological column displays data in the rocks all over the world. Like the fossil sequence (the tree-of-life sequence up-the-strata), the survival bands of the different species (up-the-strata), mass extinctions, ice ages, meteor impacts around the world, volcanic activity history (the list goes on). It's in the rocks (up-the-strata). Your flood couldn't have did that. Anyway I didn't troll you for a debate, I wan't data on the supercapacitor, and you say that they can recharge a countless amount of times. That's very attractive, cos batteries are bad for wearing out (and costing too much).
@JamesdeChrist
8 жыл бұрын
You just need to learn more to see why things do not work they way you have been deceived to think. If nothing matters to you then why think or why discuss- why live? Everything matters whether we like it or not. The statement that Darwin made was that evolution would be disproven if we did not find fossils in the fossil record which show all of the full array of creatures from the most primitive to the most advanced- we do not see that at all in the fossil record. This is a specific type of fossil. What do we see? Completely engineered and intact species with none of the in-between species that would be required for Evolution to be real. In other words were Evolution real we would not see a big jump in form from one specie to the next but a very slow tiny little steps and changes in form- multitudes of species in-between what we have found. The exact variances in human skulls exist today in the population of humans. Evolution is forced because scientists who disagree are blocked from membership and professors blocked from becoming full permanent scholars. It is part of the same agenda which spawned the Bolsheviks of Russia and Ukraine who slaughtered tens of millions of innocents. This is a group of ultranationalists who desire to takeover the entire world and impose a tyranny as they had done in Russia and Ukraine. The lunatics think Satan empowers them for killing innocents. They are the same behind Zionism too which is a fraud. They use deception and other of tricks to get people to fall for their lies. It was recently uncovered that the Scofield bible was completely made up. Now Christian Zionists falling greatly in numbers. Researchers have proven that none of the justifications for Zionism were real- Jewish Israeli researchers that is. They are the same group behind the false flag of 9/11 used to justify the war on terror. Endeavoring to know the truth is the most important thing you can do. It has been exposed that most Atheists and Agnostics still believe in God. Atheism is one of the things the Rothschilds push to weaken populations while they tell them they are stronger and more free if they accept Atheism, that Atheism means they are more intelligent. It's a trick. I think you are capable of understanding things. But you can believe whatever you like. Take care.

How can you say that when the tree-of-life-sequence is shown and shown in the ground all over the world in every university and they even shown in creationists videos. You are just trying to lie your way out of this. And what about the survival bands, the mass extinctions, volcanic activity, the meteor impacts, all shown in the geological column all over the world? HUMAN BONES Human bones (just by themselves) disproves your flood. Did every single human bone get dug up out of their graves by the flood (not leaving a single trace of human bones) and every single bone floated to the top? In the flood, human bones must have did this, cos the fossil sequence has human remains on the top layers only. And all the rest of the dead things got sorted into a perfect family tree sequence (somehow) when the flood waters receded. But human bones don’t float. And every single piece of bone, dug up out of their graves? lol If you don't believe that human bones are in the top layers only, book a tour of the fossil sites and have a look for yourself. WHY CREATIONISTS SAY SOME FOSSILS ARE “OUT-OF-SEQUENCE”. All the sediments originally formed the strata to be straight and level (always) but tectonic forces (over time) made the strata bent and buckled and on-an-angle. And you can see the angled strata protruding from the ground (in some places) and you can see that much of the protruding strata is eroded away (sometimes exposing fossils). This is why we see dinosaur fossils near the surface (that was once way below). And this is about the only reason we have found dinosaur fossils. And some more modern fossils are found near them, but the nature of the strata tells a different story. Most of the ancient fossils are found near the surface (that was once way down). But they do dig down sometimes, when they dig quarries etc. and sometimes find fossils as well. Sometimes the protruding angled strata erode (and some have eroded ages ago) and new (level) layers formed (sometimes with more fossils). And you can tell by the structure of the strata. This makes some fossils appear out-of-sequence. Creation sites are apt to point that out but deliberately don’t give a reason (like described above).

So how many kWh can you store in there in 2 or 5 seconds? What voltage?

+ab0032 It's not that much about storage but about regulating fluctuations.

+Hoch134 So it's about the Amps. Okay. 3Wh*60 cells = 180Wh = 0.18kWh. A liter of gas has about 10kWh, of which you can turn about 4kWh into electricity. But of course not for short bursts of extreme currents. So this is not something for energy storage for vehicles as I originally thought because the energy per weight is terrible but it is for supplying huge amounts of energy in extremely short bursts.

ab0032 Exactly. Although the energy per weight isn't that bad. This module can be used in wind turbines where you get different amounts of energy in a very short time which couldn't be used if there weren't capacitors behind.

Hoch134 Don't be silly, you cannot compensate the variations of a windmill, which goes with the third power of the speed of the wind. So at 10m/s you might have 1MW and at 1m/s you get 1kW, which is not even enough to run a toaster or a hairdryer. Or are you talking about these 1m radius toy windmills?
@Hoch134

ab0032 I'm talking about fluctuations for which these actually are used. Wind doesn't have the intensity all the time, but you want to have a relatively constant current/voltage.
