I'm currently rocking the MLD Burn DCF - but its not the pack for everyone - and as you'll notice its not the "best" according to the spreadsheet (by WAC or $/WAC), and the truth is there is no "best". But hopefully it will help you find what is right for you and your budget :)

Great analysis, very helpful. Trying to cut weight, looking at pros/cons, recently bought a Virga 2. I'm trying to make sense of how the manufacturer came up with a capacity of 50 liters for the main compartment. I found a cardboard box of 8" x 11.25" that fits the compartment very tightly. The length to the end of the orange/red stripes is 21.25" Doing the math of 8" x 11.25" x 21.25" divided by 61.02 cubic inches per liter equals 31.34 liters. Using the overflow to maximum extension might add 16 liters (but I think you'd need to leave 2 0r 3 inches just to close the top). Not sure how to reasonably calculate volume of pockets (side pockets are huge but mesh on front pocket seems tight). Bottom line is I'm considering the Virga 2 to have a total capacity of about 40 liters, with an overflow usable only for extra fluffy items. Otherwise, it would be very easy to exceed 20+ lb. weight load.

Very nice presentation. Some other factors that may be hard to objectively assess include the ease with which you can access your gear while hiking. I purchased a gossamer gear Murmur because if it’s extremely low weight less than 8 ounces without the hip belt. But there are no shoulder strap pockets. There’s no outside zippered pocket. And if you do use the hip belt they’re relatively small pockets. I have come to find that I like the easy access to food and water and other items while I’m moving along. Additionally, I really love the gossamer gear Kumo because though it is a frameless pack, The shoulder straps are extremely comfortable and supportive. Unlike the Murmur, whose shoulder straps are super thin. This really limits the amount you can comfortably carry in the bag. So that other factor might be how comfortable can you carry the weight that they suggest is the limit. I am sometimes tempted to purchase a running style backpack like the ultimate directions series, because of all of the storage options on the shoulder straps. Though they are decidedly heavy when you think about their WAC rating. What are your thoughts?

great feedback thank you. I agree much of this decision boils down to personal preferences and comfort needs. If you are going to spend $200+ on a backpack its a big investment for most and its worth making carefully. Many of the fancier cottage ultralight options either have no great external pouch options, or they allow customization to add such things at a higher price. I feel it takes a few years, and a few backpacks before you can really dial in what makes you happiest on the trail. Gossamer is a great company!

Great work. Very hard to be subjective as there’s still quality longevity and comfort, just to mention a few more criteria. I personally believe that if these factors are also taken into account the G4-20 Ultralight 42 would be at or near the top of the list. Believe me, I’ve spent the past month compiling the same type of comparisons for dozens of must have, backpack, shelter, sleep system, clothing etc, for my dream UL Load-out. I have preliminarily settled on the G4-20 Ultralight 42. My heart is with the levity but the features and other factors, excluding price, don’t stack up at the top of the list for me.

Great analysis. If only it was easier to test/try everything. The subjective criteria of Comfort is at the top of my wants. I like to save on weight as much as the next person, but at what benefit cost. I would like to hike 50 miles trying a 1 lb frameless ul pack with all my gear, food and water of 22 lbs bringing it to 23 lbs vs the same 22 lbs in my extremely comfortable carrying lid less 4 lb Osprey Atmos Anti Gravity 65L at 26 total lbs. Does a ul backpack provide a huge backpacking comfort benefit with the relatively small reduction in a frameless, less supportive, overall carry weight . . 3 lb weight difference using same gear over same distance? What pack on my back agrees most with my shoulders, back, hips, and legs over a week of hiking . . . with the strongest muscle group, my legs, having the least input in that decision, as my legs always outlast everything else until you start talking about ridiculously heavy loads. I don't think I would ever backpack if it meant I would have to pack more than 35lbs. I've done that and I don't want to do that any more.
@TheSoloistHikes
3 жыл бұрын
I will say - I think this "is 1 lb going to make a difference" question is a key question. But I think what makes 1lb really important is miles and altitude gain. If you are doing 3000+ ft /day or more in altitude or doing 20+ miles (or if insane, both) in a day then to me the calculus changes. I think for long trails, trips, and higher altitude gain trips the calculus changes somewhat. I agree comfort is a top-tier consideration as it make the difference between happy and sad miles.

Yeah, makes sense if you're using main compartment weight. That actually skews your results to packs that are one big body/sack...without side pockets.
@TheSoloistHikes
3 жыл бұрын
Yes, I go with main compartment capacity because strapping on additional pockets is easy and generally low weight. There is no perfect system for this comparison, just a set of imperfect tradeoffs.

Amazing work! Can you explain the JJ regression?
@TheSoloistHikes
3 жыл бұрын
If you hover over the column name, there is a description of most columns. JJ is a reddit user named JesuiJens who helpfully did a simple linear regression on Weight and Capacity to plot the average line relating the two. The numbers in this column signify where on the ideal line of best fit the weight should fall, given the main body capacity VS the actual weight. So it's basically how much lighter or heavier the backpack is than average (for its capacity). Hope that makes sense.

Nice chart. I've been trying to make a choice for a week now. The problem is that there only seems to be one that is available right away without waiting for 12 weeks to get it made. (SMD Swift X, but it's a tad over 1kg, which is a bit on the heavier side of ultra light)
@evgenypogorelov1285

Yeah - thats a major issue with the cottage manufacturers. Occasionally you can get lucky and find a Hyperlite on sale for immediate purchase at REI but its rare, and they don't carry many good ultralight options. I waited 12 weeks for my MLD Burn DCF pack - it takes some real patience. Sometimes the more mass market brands can tide you over while you wait for the pack you really want - like the Granite Gear Crown series for example.
