When you're a kid attending music school, you're bound to collide with other musicians, discovering that there is such a thing as instant chemistry between performing artists. Griffin, Andrew and Jude embody this synergy as they light up the stage at Side Launch Brewing Company. All it took was a review of some chords in the long car ride to give them confidence for this smooth performance. Much of the work was improvisational, relying on feel and body-language to signal sparks of creativity. If you guessed that their musical inclination veers towards jazz, it’s because they’ve immersed themselves as esteemed members of Wilfred Laurier University’s flourishing Jazz Ensemble. These kids spend their hours practicing, collaborating, creating, and gigging in a perpetual flow that all musicians know and love.
Admittedly, this marks the initial instalment of what promises to be a series of “Full On Sessions”. It took some courage and energy getting started in trying to turn a dream into reality. The first venue I scheduled liked the idea but suddenly realized they couldn’t shoot on bustling Friday afternoons, so I quickly reached out to various establishments in Collingwood to see if any could accommodate the inconvenience of filming a video in their place of business. Fortunately, Side Launch Brewing eagerly welcomed us, graciously opening their doors to our session.
Side Launch Brewery is a popular hangout, renowned for award-winning craft beer and their wide selection of beer. They routinely elevate everyday moments by offering live music to patrons who appreciate both good company and fine brews. Their building is an impressive cathedral of silver brewing kettles, massive walls of windows and concrete, and a ceiling high enough to reach the heavens. “This is going to be an audio recording nightmare”, I thought. So I made sure to get the microphones close to the instruments and singer, hoping to drown out uncontrollable echoes in the reflective space. Thankfully though, those echoes were captured in full glory and served to add natural ambiance to the music. All of the rich reverb you hear is real and it's beautiful…. Hence, I hereby deem Side Launch Brewing Company the Abbey Road Studios of North America!
