@sfour check out To Bid You Farewell off their Morningrise album. It's a beautiful song, almost rock, evokes all kinds of strange feelings. You can also check songs off Damnation which does not feature death metal, or Ghost Of Perdition and The Leper Affinnity for a heavier hint of them. I personally am a fan of progressive rock too, so their blending it with death metal is really intriguing to me.

Guys act normally, they are very diffrent bands, ulver didn't only made black and folk metal, but electronic and ambient too. The leader, Garm, singed with arcturus and made la masquerade infernale adn the sham mirrors, the best avant garde metal albums ever. Still opeth's approach is great, very teathrical and full of excellence. But you can't compare a black/avant-garde/electronic band with a progressive death metal with some folk elements band it's like compare apples and cheese!
