I cannot remember if your miniDSP series used the standard version over the HD version. Besides the sub phase/time alignment, it would be good to see how to use REW to align L/R with the subs. It’s such a powerful tool and one of the best investments I made in my cinema. Considering using one of these for music in my office. Looking forward to your series with the UMIK-2/Flex.

Thanks for the great review!!! , Yes, would love to see more videos on this. I think it is a good fit for Stereo sound integration with DIRAC , optimized for 2 channel listening with subwoofers as well.

Another thing I'd be really interested in is a tutorial for dual subwoofer stereo setups (2.2). How would you configure the miniDSP Flex without an AVR?
@HomeTheaterGamer

I'm actually planning a full tutorial on that very thing in the lead up to the full review (though more than likely in a separate video than the one where I set everything up). I have a pretty good idea of how it will all come together, and I may end up using a couple of powered Aperion Audio speakers I have in place of the AVR for simplicity sake.

This may seem trivial, but one thing I really like about it vs the 2x4HD is that inputs and outputs are on same side. I think this would really help with clean install

I'm really interested in the remote control performance of the Flex. Does it work at 6 feet distance? 12 feet? 20 feet? Do you need to point directly at the unit or a few degrees off axis still work? Like you say, the Flex is great for a 2.2 system. It's a preprocessor/preamp with DSP for stereo sound. The best way to use it is with: Digital sources (ex. Bluesound Node) 2 powered speakers (high passed) 2 subwoofers (low passed) You can also use passive speakers if you have an external power amplifier. 👍 (If you have an integrated amplifier or stereo receiver, you could leave the volume at 80% max and change the volume on the MiniDSP Flex)

Btw the TRS option is great if you want to use balanced cables to get rid of ground loop problems (hum) and/or if want to run really long cables. It's easy to convert TRS to XLR with adapters.

Thanks for the comment! I will definitely check all that stuff out. I haven't had a chance to do anything with it yet (received it Friday and shot this video). I do know that the remote is IR so I'm also curious how it performs off axis and how far away you need to be from it. I do have a couple of powered studio monitors (PreSonus Eris 3.5's) that I may try with it. SVS does want to send me their new Prime Wireless speakers which would also be a great pairing since they're powered.

Looking forward to your next video. I'm getting ready to buy the Balanced version of the Flex for my 2 channel music system. I'm going to use it connected to my Pc, then to a parasound halo a 23+ power amp, to Polk R700's . And plan on adding a Rhythmic Sub in the future.

I'm looking forward to your review of this unit. I looking to plug the flex between the pre-out and main in jacks of my integrated amp so that I can use the parametric eq for more granular control of my high frequencies beyond the normal tone controls. I know that I could do that with the standard minidsp HD but, I've read the flex has less distortion and is more transparent that the normal 2x4 HD.

Hi I’d be curious to know if the Minidsp has any kind of auto power on when a signal is coming in. Been thinking of hooking it up with a node connected through usb audio out but since there are no trigger input I would want to make sure the usb audio input wakes up the Minidsp for seamless streaming from the node. Thx!

Brad, There is no way I'll ever be able to afford anything more from Mini-DSP than the U-Mik1 that I bought a few years ago. If was to somehow end up with a second sub, I would have to get a Mini-DSP 2x4 because my AVR has zero EQ tuning, only the basic speaker crossover setting. At that point I would have to rewatch all of your calibration/REW/Mini-DSP videos on how to use that stuff. So, I think a "walk through" video on the set-up and use of your new arrivals would be a great addition to your vid list. However, Due to my lack of funds/income my budget HT journey is at a stand still and I'm getting bored and frustrated with it. Since I'm the only one watching movies on it since the kids have grown and moved on; does it matter if the system is any better then a clock radio anyway?

I wish you could update the videos for the minidsp 2x4 HD. They have changed the console so following the videos is worthless. They also have not updated the manuel. I'm totally overwelmed. have packed it up and went to your better bass without dsp.

I responded to your email. However, I will say that while the layout of the new Device Console is somewhat different, everything is labeled pretty much the same as in the standard miniDSP 2x4HD software. Following the miniDSP setup guides I've made still apply here, it's just that some settings (such as loading the EQ filters) has changed location slightly. I am working on revisions to the videos in order to facilitate the new and updated Device Console software. Can't say for sure when they will be released but it will be in the production pipeline soon enough.

I'll definitely look into that. I don't have one of their current AVRs that support the new DIRAC Update, but it may be something I can still talk about as I've used DIRAC in the past.
