Honestly, I'm disappointed because they could have went with 2 different satisfying routes here. They could have said Rey was also created by midichlorians, just like Anakin was. Then sure, take up the Skywalker name. But she's a goddamn Palpatine! They just did that for the shock/reveal just like "I am your father". Meh. Actually, she's not even his granddaughter, but his BIOLOGICAL DAUGHTER. Her father was a failed clone of Palpatine himself. (Revealed in comics.) The other route they could have went with was .. letting Ben live.

@@Morten_Storvik I've read all the books and comics, watched the movie and I don't have the feeling she was adopted into the family tbh. Why even? Because she was a force-user? Doesn't make much sense, there are, thanks to Rian Johnson, quite a lot of force users out there. Rey was only ever special, because she had the force dyad thing going on. Luke knew her for about 3 days, Leia maybe a bit more. But her being ADOPTED into the Skywalker family? If I am incorrect, correct me, but I don't remember it being said this way. For me, it would've been so much better, if Ben had said it in the end. Because it would be true. OR, for that matter, if Rey had just said: Rey, I'm just Rey. That way she doesn't hld on to the hated name of palpatine, but doesn't basically break the skywalker saga with, what seems like a quite fast and unrational thought about being a Skywalker... that's MY opinion on it. but it's done now, and we can't change it. So we either like it, or we don't :D And if you like it, good on you, couldn't be better.

Some things only explained in the novelization (I don’t like it either, at least not to this extent). (Sheev) Palpatine didn’t survive, he did die. In this movie he’s a clone that his spirit is possessing. His body is messed up because his evil and immense power caused it to deteriorate, which is why he’s hooked up to the life support Glados arm. There was actually a line of dialogue between him and Kylo that was cut from the movie. “You’re a clone.” “More than a clone. Less than a man.” Instead all we got was Charlie speculating. Rey’s father is Palpatine’s son in the same way Boba was Jango’s son. He was a clone. Sheev’s sith cultists tried to make him another body to replace the messed up one, and they only managed to make a single perfect one. Unfortunately it wasn’t force sensitive, so Sheev saw him as useless and just allowed him leave. Edit: actually it seems nothing is said about letting him go, and the only reason he kept him alive was the potential for the bloodline to continue. The “son” escaped, though after having Rey, so Sheev had to have let him leave exegol before in order for him to meet Rey’s mom. Unless there’s regular people on exegol we don’t know about. _shrug_

However Disney thought otherwise as they did’nt want to see the backlash of the prequels repeated. They hired JJ Abrams as a safe bet director for a so called soft reboot the franchise’, matching the original trilogy, and the most part ignoring the prequels lore. It did’nt help that they had no well thought plan for the trilogy, going from JJ Abrams, to Ryan Johnson and then firing Colin Treverrow for episode 9, only to rehire JJ Abrams for the final installment. As a long life Star Wars fan it’s heart breaking what they did to the sequels, they never followed through with George’s vision.

I was three years old at the time. I was somewhat disappointed with the Prequel Trilogy, but there were many elements that were still pretty good. And it did tell a coherent story from beginning to end, although they didn't tell it particularly well. But this trilogy? Disney's trilogy can burn in the fires of Hell for all I care. The only good Star Wars Disney managed to put out has been Rogue One and The Mandalorean. Clone Wars began long before Disney got hold of the property, so they get little credit for how good it is. Rebels was okay, but not great. Same with Solo. But Episodes 7 through 9 are absolute trash.

According to the director Rose had several more scenes in the script, but they were all with Leia, and they couldn't get the CGI of Leia good enough to be happy with the look of the scenes so they ended up leaving them out of the movie. As to "all of the resistance fighters" at the end they kind of covered that in the movie, when the First Order Admiral is like "Where did this fleet come from?" and his subordinate answers "They don't seem to be a fleet sir, they're just... people." They weren't members of the Resistance, Lando went out and started rallying the common folk and basically the entire galaxy turned out to fight the First Order.

My take on Luke "making an attempt on Ben's life" in episode 8. The difference between what happened with Vader and what happened with Ben is that with Vader, Luke could sense the conflict in his father. Probably because Luke was a big reason for his father's conflict. Before Luke pulled his lightsaber on Ben, he tried to sense any conflict inside of his nephew and all Luke saw was death and destruction. He sensed no conflict in Ben and when confronted by that evil, he reacted on instinct and ignited his lightsaber. And then immediately regretted doing it. I have had emotional responses to situations or people and then immediately regretted that response and felt shame for doing it. That happened to Luke, but what Ben saw was Luke trying to kill him even though Luke at that point had gathered himself. Yes Luke is a legend and yes Luke is a hero, but he is still a flawed person.

That is likely because those growing up with it have had years of expectations, well those just joining have likely only seen each film once, and the workings of the world haven't solidified in their minds. So I think where they were trying to go with the title, and to salvage this makeshift trilogy, was in this movie it was the rise of “Family Skywalker” against Palpatine. And the path of Rey here is like when a child is adopted from a terrible household and, when they learn, fears they’re doomed for the same fate. But in the end it shows that you CAN choose your family; that you’re more than what you were born as. Also Ben and Rey are said to be a diad, like a yin and yang, in the force who’s powers combined were pure life energy - which is what the Force is. Palpatine sucked so much out of both that they each only had enough to ultimately sustain one being - and Ben decided this is where his path had to end; using his knowledge of the dark side and using Life Transfer, instead of Force Heal which is the light side version that Rey does.

The last trilogy isn’t fondly looked at by long time fans for many reasons. One of the biggest was that Luke was completely NOT himself and Mark Hamiltonian said that he expressed this to the writer/director Rian Johnson many many times. He said he had to envision himself as another character altogether, JAKE Skywalker, in order to get thru his scenes. Also, as you said, this last movie was all over the place and a HUGE reason why (though Disney at first denied it, but it’s now been revealed and admitted by many) is that Disney did NOT have an overall story outline for the trilogy but just made it up as they filmed it!! Rey’s lineage wasn’t decided until midway thru filming Episode 9!! If this isn’t poor management of such a beloved franchise, then I don’t know what is. This is why many want these movies officially declared “unofficial” and the story for “real” episodes written to replace them.

Ben has zero affiliation to the planet, Leia's only experience there was being Jabba's slave, Luke wanted to get away from that piece of dirt because it offered him nothing of worth for his life and Anakin straight up hated the planet because of the tragedies he endured on it, including but not limited to the death of his mother and also being a slave there. The last scene was supposed to be nostalgic fan service but it failed to do that utterly and completely by not just sending a message completely opposite that of the rest of the movie but also showing a severe lack of understanding when it comes to the entire franchise and it's key figures.

Perhaps, but considering that most of the Skywalker family grew up on Tatooine and are buried there, and the importance of that planet to the lives of the Skywalkers, I think it makes a fitting graveyard. Our of curiosity, which planet would you have chosen instead? Remember that it has to be somewhere that would immediately resonate with the audience, not just the characters. A place to bury the dead, and let everyone move on with her lives. I cannot think of anywhere better than Tatooine for that purpose. It's where the Skywalker saga began, and where it ends.

@@Rocket1377 How about don't bury the lightsabers at all? And the throughline of "a planet the audience will recognize" ain't a good reason. If you wanted to honor the weapon of two Jedi by burying them, why not do so on Coruscant. Or Yavin. Or Ach-To, if you wanna stay within the boundaries of planets established in the ST. All of them planets much more appropriate to bury lightsabers on because all of them are home to Jedi temples and all of them are equally as recognizable or at this point even more recognizable than Tatooine, seeing as the ST established two other desert planets that look virtually identical to Tatooine.

Funfact: Everytime a new Star Wars Trilogy comes out, the fans hate it. They hated the Prequels and now they hate the Sequels. Sure, they have flaws, but they're still great movies. And the most funny thing about this is, the things they hate in the Sequels are the same things they love in the old Expanded Universe or the Prequels and OG. They hate Palpatines return in Episode 9, but love his return in Dark Empire. They hate these new Xyston class Star Destroyers, because they all have superlasers. But they love the World Devastators in Dark Empire, which are basically impossible to destroy and are much more badass than even the Starkiller base. They hate a 20 year old girl, because she's naturally talented in the Force and can defeat Kylo Ren with minimal training. But they love a 9 year old boy, who has never flown a Starfighter, but destroys a large Battleship with it. And his Podracing skills are hilarious too, or are you able to win a F1 race as a 9 old kid? Wanna see, how the haters gonna do it. And this "Force argument" doesn't count, because if it doesn't count for Rey, it doesn't count for Anakin. Or they love the Sith Emperor Vitiate who kills a Sith-Lord at a age of ten, with no training. I'm not criticizing the OG, Prequels or Legends with this arguments. I just wanna say, that the hate is ridiculous. You had other expectations? That's no problem. And if you don't like it because of it, it's no problem too. But don't shit talk the Sequels, because you expected a other story. And don't hate fans who love the movies.

I love ep 7 & 9. Ep. 9 had a lot to do and the first viewing can be overwhelming; however, after re-watching it multiple times it has become one of my fave StarWars films!

This was a paint by numbers film, and it showed. Directors, producers and writers who claimed to love SW but clearly didn't give a damn, they were just piecing it along as they went, just to get a paycheck and meet their deadlines. That's the difference between SW under Lucas and SW under Disney. You can disagree all you want with George's vision for SW during the prequel era (and I sure did) but at least you had consistency and a respect for the history. Even from a strictly business standpoint, this film left Lucasfilm with few options going forward.. at least set yourself up for future films...and they didn't even do that.

Remember in Episode two when they were creating that clone army? That's what Palpatine did to come back; he cloned himself. The resistance mentioned it near the beginning of this movie.
