Two years ago, Cyclones Idai and Kenneth affected more than 300,000 houses in Mozambique. With the Ministry of Public Works, the Reconstruction Cabinet and financial support of UNDP, UN-Habitat led on the design of resilient housing to build and rehabilitate houses in cyclone affected areas. This participative approach brought together the National Institute for Risk Reduction and Disaster Management, Eduardo Mondlane University, local artisans and communities, and the Municipalities of Dondo and Beira, where the models were tested. The methodology was also applied to rehabilitate Beira's Renewable Energy Community Centre. The designs will be mainstreamed at national level to support the housing policies and post-disaster reconstruction efforts.
