Over the next weeks, I'll share with you some recordings from my younger years. Here is Franz Tunder's (1614-1667) incredible phantasy over Christ lag in Todesbanden. Tunder was the predecessor of Dietrich Buxtehude in Lübeck's Marienkirche. In would be there where J.S.Bach would arrive in 1705, after a walk of over 400 km to meet Buxtehude.
The Tunder phantasy fits in a row of simply stunning works, where a choral theme is treated in the most diverse way. The large organs allowed also very special effects, among which the echoes of motives, some slow, some fast, produce incredible acoustical effects.
This recording is a LIVE recording, made on June 25 1999 as the first round of the International Schnitger Organ competition.
The organ you hear is the famous F.C.Schnitger organ of the Laurens church in Alkmaar (NL)
