And best of all these were dirt cheap! Speaking of knives I saw you have another one up woki g on the handle. I'll go have a look tonight.

Great showing! the back springs look great on all the wasp series. Not a fan of the covers but they are durable. Love the Vg10! probably will get a cotton sampler. Great fixes. and that Barlow was an easy fix! now I am looking at all my RR blades for bend. On the heavy forged the blade stock is so thick they just center themselves! love my trapper!

I don't really care for the covers either. It's not the material but the color. I plan to dye some of the covers. Red, orange, or black? Not sure which yet or I may try them all and see how it turns out. All the heavy blades are fine. I have a couple in the Wasp series with heavier blades and they are perfect. I think sticking with heavy blades would be good buying advice for RR's.

I had been wanting to try RR's VG10 and the heavy forged series. They are all very inexpensive! I think this is a good way for someone that is a little bit handy to get into traditionals.

Nice looking series of knives! You are braver than me about bending on those blades! Have a wonderful day!!

Stainless blades are fine to bend. It's the carbon steel blades that snap.

The best thing to do is test on a cheap $15 knife like these. At least you are not out much if you hear the "magic ping" sound 😯@@mikecurtis2585

Great idea for a video. I haven't picked up any VG10 knives yet. I will though. Thanks.

I think VG10 is probably the best steel for these cheap knives, unless a patina is desired.

What a haul! Great job fixed those. Inspiring me to go through some of my RR to try and fix any issues. That's a better outcome than me with new OT's lol. 5 out of 7 were bad. Excellent video brother!

With any of these cheap knives there are going to be issues. There are no $15 Jack Wolves for a good reason. Fortunately a few little tweaks can salvage some of the knives.

50/50 is what I’ve found to be true too. I’ve been saying this for a long time, but I think if they did away with the swedging on their blades, they would have better luck with straight blades. So many of their blades come bent or warped and I think it’s because of the swedges. Older rough ryder knives that didn’t have swedges typically came straight. Nice video showing off what you received.

I think you are right! I looked through this batch and a couple of others and the ones with thicker blade stock are fine. The thin blades with a swedge are the problem.
@zero61288

@@LastChanceKnives I agree. The thin blades don’t have enough material after having a swedge put in, in order to handle the high heat when quenching the blades. I bet if we could see them during quenching, the tips would probably be over heated compared to the rest of the blade

Thanks so much Ken for showing these knives…. It will really help people make there decisions when trying these knives…… good choice I love VG10 steel have you ever tried the VG10 knives with the blue and black covers you might want to try them out as well…… thanks as always for another premium video!!!!! 😊

I have one single blade knife with green aluminum covers in VG10. It's a pretty nice one. I need to get one of the blue ones. I do hope it helps people know what to expect from these knives. It looks like RR has done a good job heat treating vg10. But for $15 average price you can't expect perfection.

This was really great info. My RR collection is very small, I've only got four of them, and all four came in great shape. But I've been wanting to get a few more, so it was nice to see what their batting average is like. Cheers, buddy!

So far, it seems like the knives with thicker blades are much better. I'll be going over this as each knife that was unbound is reviewed

I heard a rumor that ken onion was going to do a series for Rough Rider. So are these worth the money at all? Ive got a bid in on a rough rider premium select trapper but dont want to oay $35 for it if its junk.

It would be very interesting if Ken Onion was to make some new designs for RR! I do not know anything about the Premium Select line. With the regular line , as you saw in the video it's about 50/50. They are good knives and will last a long time. The steel is only 440a though. Moving up to the Rough Ryder Reserve line and it is completely different. They have a much improved fit and finish plus D2 steel. Where the Premium Select line falls is a good question? Have you searched the line on KZitem? I would think you could find out more information.
