Very helpful video. I can never understand why so many don’t love pink. It’s been my very favorite for my entire life.

Dakota sent me a sampler box of Pinks (I do love pink!) many which brands I already have. I use Richeson a lot. I really love them, and find them very similar to the Unison. Mount Vision are really wonderful as well, and very similar to Unison too. The Art Spectrum Red B is one of my favorite colors. Dakota Art Pastels is a wonderful company, since I am in the U.S. I use them a lot. Their pastel travel boxes are wonderful. Enjoy the pastels!

i have been adding to my collection of Unison soft pastels, my favorite so far, and as I was putting together my travel box, I noticed I lacked bright pinks. This was a very helpful video. I'll check out some of the pastels you shared!

Loved all the pink colors and comparing the different brands. Unison would be my first choice and I use several other brands too for floral work. I am a great fan of pink!!

I'm on the east coast in the U.S. and use Dakota Art Pastels for some of my ordering. They are great and have great customer services. I have a few of each of the pastels that you are talking about, and I have to say my favorites are Mount Vision with the large stick, Richeson and Townsends, especially the Terrages. The Great American names of the pastels are fun. And I Love Pink!!!

The Diane Townsend pastel (the larger shape) is mixed with pumice and is for sanded papers only. I'm not sure what it would do to your velour papers!

That's great to know Carol. I have a bit of investigating to do to find out more about some of the brands I'm less familiar with. I'll go easy on velour with that one then!

Thanks for the link to Dakota pastels. It's nice to just look at pastel supplies. The bigger art supply websites have pastel mixed in with drawing supplies and it can be confusing to somebody starting out like myself. Your artwork is awesome!

"Pinks" Are notorious in all mediums for light-fast issues. Since you have all those brands of Pink, it would be great if you would do a 6 month light-fast test and show the results.

Gosh that is a lot of PINK! But I see the need for it in flowers and scenic paintings! I have worked in watercolor paints for years and have always been a watercolorist from the start of my professional life. I wonder if these are as light-fast? Do you know if Pastels have a fugitive problem? Simply curious, Thanks!

That's a great question about lightfastness. The standardised system for this is actually being developed for pastel. It badly needs it to show the difference between all the brands and make it clear what you're getting. When that system is available Unison, Pan Pastel, Terry Ludwig and couple of other will rate highly.

Pink is my favorite color (and green is a close second) I always worry about lightfastness with these bright pinks. Are these lightfast, do you think? I am new to using pastels, besides unison, what would you recommend? I have some nupastels I bought years ago when I used to do art journaling. These are very hard pastels. I haven't tried any other pastels besides these and some panpastels I just received. I am excited to learn more. I have pastel pencils coming in the mail on Saturday.

Most of these more expensive brands have really good light fastness. Unison and Terry Ludwigs are really good quality but many of these other `American brands are similar. Light fastness is one main area the cheaper brands fall down on.

How many years did it take you to build up your fabulous collection of pastels?
@EmmaColbertArt
3 жыл бұрын
Quite a long time Anya and I started adding one or two quality sticks at a time when I didn't have much money. They soon accumulate. For about 10 years during my teens I used student grade but started to add quality in my 20s. For the 12 years I've been a professional I've added more, and most colours last quite a while also.

Haha, no! Not yet! But I have used most of the other pinks, especially for flowers or pink tongues or bits of clothing. I'm just waiting on a portrait with a fluorescent pink jumper now :-)

Hi Emma, do you get charged import duties when bringing pastels from the US to the UK? I had seen some pastels that were only available in the US but was worried about import duties.
@EmmaColbertArt

Hi Kerry, yes I do get charged. I got a friend to carry me home some Terry Ludwigs one time when he visited the States. But I do purchase from Dakota Pastels as they stock some items I can't find elsewhere.
