Dr. Jones, since I seem to recall you being an Anglican Christian, I'd like to express my condolences as to the passing of Her Majesty the Queen yesterday. I'm praying for the repose of her soul. 🙏

Scoring the NRSVue for 'literalness' is about 50% complete, and -- not surprisingly -- it's very close to the '89 edition. I think I've found three fewer 'liberties' in 100 verses.

I suspect there will be some such comparisons in the full review. I plan to make notes of differences as I score it, and make a few comparison charts based on those differences. Also, I'd like to look at the NRSVue's approach to gender inclusive language, so I'll likely modify some of the charts I used in the "Comparing the Gender Inclusive Translation Methods ..." video from a year or two ago. Thanks for commenting!

@@Mike-pz6hz Here are a few changes I've noticed: 1. Genesis 1.2 now translates _tohu wabohu_ as "complete chaos" instead of "formless void" to better capture the sound effect in the original Hebrew. 2. 1 Kings 14.24 and similar passages now translate _qadesh_ as "illicit priest" instead of "male temple prostitute" to avoid assuming too much. (The Hebrew word is closely related to the word that is often translated as "holy.") 3. Mark 1.1 now places "Son of God" in a footnote, following the small number of manuscripts that omit those words. 4. Romans 12.1 has restored the KJV's "reasonable" as its translation of _logiken_ instead of retaining the ASV's "spiritual." 5. Romans 13.13 now translates _koitais_ as "illicit sex" instead of "debauchery." This change is reflected in 1 Corinthians 6.9 and 1 Timothy 1.10, which translate the compound word _arsenokoitai_ as "men who engage in illicit sex." (It really should be "males who have illicit sex with each other," but at least the translation is drawing attention to the fact that _koiten_ is a term used in Leviticus 18.20-23 LXX.) 6. Jude 1.5 now follows the manuscript reading "Jesus" instead of "the Lord," thereby identifying Jesus as the one who rescued the Hebrews from Egypt. 7. Revelation 21.16 now gives the measurements of the New Jerusalem in stadia instead of miles. This change is important because the number of stadia (12,000) is most certainly symbolic, evoking the 12 tribes and/or the 12 apostles.

The 1 Cor 6 issue is already well known (Mark Ward did a pretty good video on it). I'm looking forward to seeing the final review of it by you. I don't think there will be significant differences in most of the actual text to get me to upgrade from my personal size large print Comfort Print NRSV with Apocrypha that Zondervan released last year. Then again, I'd love to see a reference edition at some point in time be issued (which might be the entry point for me to pick up the NRSVue).

I've been wavering back and forth on this very issue: Do I want to wait for a study Bible or a single-column edition? This mindset caused me to talk myself out of getting an NASB 2020, event though I had anticipated that update since its announcement. (I still don't have one because they still haven't given it a major study Bible!) A part of me wants to back the NRSVue now with its initial release, especially since the buzz around it has been a little too negative. (Yes, it translates one Greek word in a less-than-ideal way, but I could gripe about the way that other versions handle that word, too. And many other changes in this update are marked improvements over the 1989 edition.) I already feel a tad guilty for not stepping in and supporting the NASB 2020 when it was getting flogged for daring to place _and sisters_ in italics.

@@MAMoreno I'm hopeful that Zondervan will continue on the path they started with the NRSV and offer a variety of Bibles in the NRSVue. I feel the desire to support the underdog as well, but they need to give me something with some margins! I expect I'll be scribbling down a lot of notes, especially when comparing it with the NRSV and other translations.

If you don't get the opportunity to inspect one in person: The production quality of this copy seems quite good. I notice that, in the comments, two people say they've had problems with the durability of Leathersoft, but personally I haven't had issues with it. (And for an additional $90 or so, you can acquire a copy in goatskin.) I'm not a fan of the glossy paper, but that doesn't bother some people.

@@properpropaganda9831 I'm not talking about the different approaches and philisophies for translation, whìch lead to slightly different pros and cons for the bible text. This is a given. I'm talking about the NRSVue's deliberate changing of words, so as to please the modern, non-christian sensibilities regarding sexuality. It has nothing to do with the strength or weakness of a translation, and everything to do with the producers pandering to the world. Your attempt to equate these two, completely different situations, is puzzling to me, and quite worrisome.
@properpropaganda9831

@@arthurbrugge2457 You would need to discuss your concerns with the translation team of the NRSVue as I am not qualified to speak on their behalf. However, your opinions aside, one fact remains: No translation is without bias, and some translations are guilty of pandering to evangelical sensibilities that may not reflect an accurate rendering of the text. The NRSVue is an ecumenical translation which helps guard against sectarian bias, and that is one of the main reasons it is my translation of choice. Take care, God bless.
