The brothers take lives in a kill or be killed sense with their men. They wouldn't just needlessly murder someone and Sam attempting to do that just now is what shocked Nate, Rafe, Nadine and the audience when they saw it. Sam really lost sight of who he was in that moment and was going to ruthlessly execute her. That's why it was shocking to watch.

What makes this plot twist great is the fact that you don't see it coming for one reason: they made the entire prison sequence playable as Sam, so when he tells you what happened you automatically believe him. Such a smart move. Naughty Dog knew it would have been kind of weak had they not fooled the player like that.
@korruption6
7 жыл бұрын
Yes it was a good way to fool the player, while leaving out things such as how Alcazar would know where and when to find Samuel again in 3 months. Sneaky one, that Druckmann. Now people will start thinking, "Now I won't know what's real and what isn't!" even in playable parts of The Last of Us Part 2.

@UndertakerU2ber

+Walter White For the average person who doesn't have rose-tinted glasses on, the prison break scene was a horrible addition to the game. Going all the way back to the time of Shakespeare, play writers knew that if an event didn't happen on stage, then it didn't happen in the minds of the audience. So if in Romeo & Juliet, there was a scene where the Capulet and Montague families were to be on stage talking about Romeo and Juliet dying, and never actually showed them die, then their deaths never happened from the audiences perspective. This logic works in reverse, where if the audience sees something happen on-screen, then it tells the audience that this actually happened. Considering that this prison break scene gave control over Sam, and permitted him to die in this segment, it tells the audience that this actually happened to Sam. However, the game pulls the rug right out from under the audience, and reveals that that entire sequence was a complete and utter lie all in an attempt to make a crappy M. Night Shyamalan plot twist. In any honest person's mind, they're thinking "Then what was the point of that sequence? I basically wasted my time playing that!" It was a poor attempt at a plot twist that not only breaks the rules of basic screenwriting, but is also an insult to the audience.

There really are 2 sides to look at Samuel Drake.... A. Yes, his lying Nathan about how Hector Alcazar had a noose around his neck for getting outta prison is a dick move. He essentially used Nathan's sentimentality over his older brother to his own ends. Kinda screwed up in retrospect if you look at the flashbacks in this game.... B. Here's where I might end up sympathizing.... his and Nathan's mother died, then their father pawned off her stuff and dumped them in a Catholic orphanage. And once he finds his mother's journal, that's when the obsession of finding Avery's treasure began. He and Nathan wanted to do it TOGETHER. But after Sam was left to rot in his cell after his "death," he was all alone for 13 years, so the obsession just festered. And notice he's only focused on the treasure, while Nate has THAT and a wife and a father figure to focus on. Sam doesn't have that. He doesn't have a father figure or even a patient and understanding significant other to help ground him to reality and to get him to relax.... at least he doesn't have a chance to relax until he partners up with Sully. So in conclusion, Samuel Drake is, yes, a selfish dick. But he's also a guy struggling with life trying to find purpose in something when he has nothing or no one else in his life (still doesn't justify his BS)....

Funnily enough, Sam working _with_ Rafe and betraying Nate, at least for a time, was the original draft of the story. It's only one picture from the original story, but it almost makes you wonder _"What If...?"_

I mean I kind of understand him, he knew that if he told Nate the thruth they wouldn't have found the treassure, which was all Sam ever wanted to do in life after he found out about his mother's journal and all of that. Sure it was selfish, but they came out alive, right? No harm done. He just achieved his life's goal. I actually feel bad for him that there had to be so much action with Rafe and Nadine and all of those guys. All he wanted to do was go on an adventure with nate and find it. No action and no Rafe.

This was an awesome plot-twist, especially since it's one I didn't already get spoiled about before I played the game. I would go as far to say that this is one of the best plot twists I've ever played through. I mean, once you think about it, there were a lot of holes in Sam's story. Like why would Sam keep his prison clothes on after he escaped? Or how would Hector Alcazar simply "know" when Sam found the treasure? These are holes in Sam's story but you don't even realize it until after the twist is revealed. And then you feel kinda like an idiot but in an awesome way!

Sam didn't have any other clothes, in fact Sam probably didn't even bother describing this and the story was just visualised for us. Hector is built up to be powerful enough to get away with a lot of things and I don't think keeping tabs on just Sam would be too hard. Even then, this game series has had inexplicable moments of the characters being followed before so if the story was true it wouldn't be very hard to believe in the Uncharted universe

The only thing I ever questioned/felt a little bit off was why Nadine knew Sam was Nate's brother and they were working together. And then in this scene, when Rafe acknowledges Sam, but not surprised or anything. A guy apparently dead 15 years an no one raises an eyebrow? But I chalked it up to me over thinking. I felt like Nate when all was revealed.

4:55 Rafe: I just need Sam. Nate: now you're making a mistake. Sam: Rafe don't, don't listen! I love the difference in reaction of these two. Nate is calm, wants to have not much causalities as possible, plus he still thinks Rafe was the same 15 years ago and didn't' expect him to actually shoot him. So Nate replied calmly and rationally, with a tone that sounded like he didn't expect Nate to really go through with it. Sam on the other hand, will not hesitate to shed blood if it meant saving their lives, evidenced by him holding Nadine hostage and actually nearly killing her if not for Nate stopping him, and he's worked with Rafe for 2 years and knows how aggressive he is now, especially after bailing on him. So his response is panic and his immediate defense to Nate.

@@Literallyryangosling777 I wish they didn't use the word "luck" when they explained it because I feel like it still confuses people. The screen losing color is more like the enemies' shots are getting closer and closer because they're narrowing down their aim. It happens faster the higher the difficulty because enemies are more precise. You'll notice when you leave cover or pop out of cover the first few shots from enemies always miss. The only exceptions are like melee damage and MAYBE explosions, since it's heavily implied Nate's taking damage from the exploding mummies, just not the shrapnel or anything deadly like that. It's also why there's no fall damage and anything too high is instant death.

Well they did a great job with his cheractor especially when they were escaping the prison in the van and he went from calm to psychotic in just seconds. Had the knife to Sam's throat, and after makind Sam promise half the treasure in 3 months he gets calm again, gives him money, and leaves with the promise to find Sam to collect the cash no matter where he is. When you put yourself in Sam's shoes and consider that the truth of the story is what just happened i would be a bit intimidated as well, because there are people like that in real life.
