The only word I can think of to accurately describe this channel is "satisfying." On paper this should not be this interesting yet here I am once again watching another video about unclogging culverts and learning about how their built, what happens over time, how nature has an effect, how culverts have changed over time and more. But most of all, watching you remove the debris and have the water flow return to the way it was intended is just so satisfying.

Man, I've been binge watching this channel for the last 3 days. I've heard the word "culvert" more times than in the last 30 something years of my life (including version in my native language) and...yes, this is "satisfying". Actually so satisfying to watch that I had to stop a bit and think about what makes it so good. It is so different from all those shows, social media etc. that attack you with and addict you with sudden rush of emotions. This one is much more healthy, steady and constructive. The subject may be trivial at first sight but the more you think about it the more important it becomes (especially this lake drain thing). It's amazing at what good spirited, humble people can do as a hobby so well attuned to their nature. Good work post 10, keep it going!

In a couple of towns that I lived in, I regularly cleared the storm drains and gutters on the paved streets that I lived on. If they weren't cleared, leaves, sticks and silt caused blockages that would back up the street. Sometimes the accumulated water froze and caused additional issues. This was the worst in autumn and spring. It is a satisfying pastime. Keeping in mind safety, I would recommend doing so for the closest few storm drains near your home. I used a metal shovel, garden and leaf rake, buckets/bins, a trowel and a wagon. Dry boots, thick waterproof gloves, warm clothes that can get mucky is all that you need to wear. Any cleared debris left near the storm drain or gutter would be dumped back in by residents within days, so must get removed to an appropriate location. I also cleared snow about 4 feet in any direction from the streets' fire hydrants.

Post 10, as someone who's spent time clearing debris from culverts & small dams, a couple recommendation on tools. For culvert work, look into getting what's known as a cultivator rake, a/k/a refuse hook or potato rake. The head is narrower than a garden rake, but with longer tines, like a small, bent pitchfork, & I find it much more handy for breaking up & moving tangled woody debris that you often deal with, & also as a retriever with a swing-twist-pull technique. It's ok for breaking up dirt & muck, & even works as a come-along for moving smaller rocks. Get the stoutest tines you can find, & a one piece synthetic/metal handle will stand up better to the conditions. If you still favor a garden-style rake for clearing grates, the Fiskars PRO series is the gold standard, as is the whole Fiskars line of yard tools. Good luck, & keep that water flowing!
