There is a reason for no new Dune games that has been missed here: The Herbert estate, for the longest time, held back all licensing of the Dune property. (I am uncertain of the situation with already held licenses, but as Cryo is dead and we don't know where that ended up, and the other is held by EA chances are nothing would happen with either anyway). This has been particularly evident with regards to board games, where a somewhat legendary board game was produced in 1979 and then completely disappeared off the market. A board game with the same essential gameplay, but completely different theme, was released in 2012. Why not the Dune theme? Blocked by the Herbert estate. Now though, with a new movie, a re-release of the original Dune board game, and a new board game with the Dune license (Dune Imperium), there is a possibility that we may hear someone claiming to make a new video game based on the Dune license.
@reallycool

Yeah I avoided licensing issues because I couldn't verify where anything was, as it's all privately held. For example, there's a good chance that Embracer owns Cryo's assets, since DreamCatcher absorbed Cryo, DCI were bought by JoWood, and JoWood was folded into THQ Nordic. And there's rumors that Funcom is working on not one, but *three* Dune games, but as everything is private or proprietary it's really hard to get a bead on the truth. I try not to put completely untested information in my videos.

I played this game a huge amount as a kid. I hadn’t read Dune, I didn’t have a manual, but sheer hours put into it had me figure it out. At one point I had the Harkonnens and the emperor pinned on their stronghold, reducing my spice cost to 0 and I ended up getting almost all the planet terraformed. Amazing game

The massive online strategy game sounds insane. Funnily enough, it would have reflected the story and world of Dune in the game. I wonder how this would have turned out, although I think that the player experience would have been so displeasurable, that no sufficent amount of players would have played the game long enough for the dynamics in Dune to play out. It would be interesting though to see a game with hydraulic dictatorship elements...

The precursor to Dune Generations was another MMORTS game, by Cryo, simply named "Mankind". That game was a massive galaxy of hundreds of thousands of systems, each with their own 3d (but 2d) space to build in, each with multiple planets in, on which they were 3d (but 2d) landscapes you could build upon. Players created huge militaries and would wipe out entire "cubes" (multiple solar systems worth) built up by players. Each planet had its own resources and you had to search around a lot to find the good ones. Honestly, it was the best MMO I've ever played, and this was at the time when having a 1ghz processor and a 56k modem was cutting edge home PC technology.
@swytchblayd

I feel like it would have needed to garner a huge player base to function. Also the license would probably have been pulled at just the wrong moment (because the Herbert estate seems to love doing that kind of nonsense) leaving the devs hanging in the wind with an unsellable product :( Maybe it was for the best that it never got to shelves, because that would be tragic to watch.

There's a really cool Dune board game as well. It's an asymmetric strategy game where each family/group has completely different powers, going as far as one of the players (the Emperor probably?) literally owning the game's "shop". So if you need to buy items, you're handing money directly to another player.

Yeah, there's one thing in the Emperor, that you don't find anywhere these days. Fully integrate-able subfactions represented by the minor houses of that Laandsrad. House of IX, House Teilaxiu, House Corrino (sardukar), the guild itself and the Fremen, though you can not recruit the Guild during the campaign and Ix along with Fremen hate Teilaxiu, so they'll abandon you in the campaign, if you chose to ally with them. and already had earlier alliance. Something you won't find these days anymore.

Had the original Amiga 500 version game of Dune back in the days. Its one of the few memorable game i remember going from the 8bit era to the 16bit..Sadly i got rid of all my big box games because i had to move house. Since then ive managed to at least get a little handfull of big box games back & Dune had eluded me untill only 7 month ago when i stumbled upon a used big box version (Amiga/Virgin games) at my local retro store & bought it for only 15 bucks including manual & everything. Thanks to a drawbridge module & a usb-floppy drive i can even run the game directly in a emulator on my pc with the original real time loading & floppy swapping :) Looking at the box i do wonder why i even bought the game in the firste place back in the day, because the cover dosnt have any depiction of a broadshoulder weaponweilding fella or a skimpy clad damsel in distress or things exploding (or all 3 in combination). Instead they went for a more arty cover, & i do wonder how well it actually sold. Still back then "word of mouth" & magazine reviews was what really counted i guess.

I wasn't any good at Dune 2, but I absolutely loved all the art. When I found out there was a movie and it aired on my birthday, I knew how I'd spend the day. I was a kid, so you can imagine my disappointment when there were no rocket launchers or tanks to be seen anywhere. After the second commercial break I went playing outside and eventually forgot everything about it. Still super easy to run in DosBox. Legacy is another alternative, but it's not the original experience. Lastly there is an APK out there which is pretty faithful to the original and works great with touch controls. Recently beat it with all 3 factions

I know the Westwood Dune games are important in game history, but I always felt like they missed the point of the books. Conquest-based games are inherently pro-colonial by their nature. And I think that points at the big problem with making Dune games. The books are SO grim and deconstructionist that they don't lend themselves to gamification. I mean, who'd want a game about the Fremen exterminating billions in their holy war? Or playing a worm-human tyrant deliberately suppressing humanity's potential? Those sure sound like best-sellers to me! ;-) (Ie, Star Wars gets the good games because Star Wars generally doesn't make you feel bad about all the star warring going on.)

Haha to touch on your last part. I feel like literally ALL of star wars media outside some of the excellent books (the insane expanded universe collaboration run of the late 90's to 2013) never touch on the weighty parts. Hell I even think the original movies do a pretty bad job of explaining how the force works and exactly why the galaxy was at war. (the retcon from the books of palatine building Star Destroyers to fight the incoming Yuuzhon Vong invasion was genius) Literally no nuance in star wars media when there's literally tons of potential for it

about "the idea of spending so many resources developing a game:" game design is a great gamble. has the popularity of the type of game waned? Has the game had development time enough to gel? (Gelling is the process of the game suspending reality and drawing the player into the game where the interface, computer and monitor become a platform to take the player into another reality.) Even in making films there is this element. This is why Walt Disney had three films in production at the same time knowing that one or two of them would flop. It was the one that hit that carried the studio into the next set of three animated films.

7:31 The ecological side and the oppression of the people of Arrakis were never a linked thing. In the novel, no one except Kynes even understood the link between the worms and the spice, and ecological development in general was simply never considered to even be possible. 9:24 Wait, what? MIDI music had been used for ages in games. The earliest implementation of MIDI in home computer systems is as old as 1982. In fact, Cryo's Dune has MIDI, and just three years after Dune II, Westwood started using fully digitised music in Command & Conquer. If Dune II pioneered anything on the audio front, it's that it used digitised samples for unit responses and the mentat voices. 9:54 Bizarrely, Dune 2000 is completely unrelated to the C&C games; it was wholly outsourced to the British company _Intelligent Games,_ and the only Westwood parts are the videos and music. These are also the only files in file formats designed by Westwood, and the reading systems for those file formats are the only Westwood code in the project. 10:34 Not really true. DOSBox is really simple to set up if you want to play Dune II, and in my opinion, playing a remake that runs on its own game engine really isn't the same as playing the original game. Not to mention, the code of Dune II was fully reverse engineered in the _OpenDune_ project, and the enhanced version _Dune Dynasty,_ with modern UI controls on an otherwise unchanged original Dune II engine, was built on that. And there is a one-click install pack of Dune 2000 out there made by Gruntmod that allows playing the original Dune 2000, too. 11:07 Not sure if "a game, its remake, and the remake's sequel" really counts as a trilogy, lol. Side note: Emperor, too, was programmed by _Intelligent Games,_ not by Westwood Studios.

I'm not entirely sure its fair to say Dune games turned in to star wars games. I think the similarities between the franchises really end at the plot level. In terms of themes, tone, and style the two franchises heavily diverge. Star wars is very character focused, while Dune is contemplative on aspects of human nature. SW tends to have an upbeat or hopeful tone, while Dune's reminds me of Kurt Vonnegut's image of a disappointed father, watching as Humanity can't stop from tearing itself apart. Maybe I'm being unfair, as I'm sure spin off Dune media likely wouldn't focus exclusively on the heavy side of things.
