the reason why so many of these were believable back in the day was simply... because indie devs back in the day really would sneak random stuff like UFOs into their games on some updates for no reason other than to act as an easter egg

I feel like no other block game or successor to Minecraft will ever have such fun, legendary, almost mythical early days shrouded in legend and mystery. I started playing pretty early and still remember trying to build Aether portals and spawn Herobrine. The lack of polish and the niche community as the game first began to grow added such charm. Its kind of sad how much that stuff has faded away, even most of the old Minecraft content is no longer accessible (I've spent hours trying to find the first Minecraft video I watched to no avail). Newer block games with much better design are in the works, but nothing will replicate the experience of growing up with the fundamentally chaotic and indie early Minecraft.

It seems like the Herobrine stories took aspects of many other creepypasta that came before them to build up the infamous white eyed miner. Interacting with players using chat, signs, and structures of various kinds. It's kind of cool to see that the stories don't actually die-- they just pick up new names to go by to get our attention again. They will never die. We won't let them. We may not mean to perpetuate the cycle, but we are the key to it.

Actually, Minecraft has a potential for a lot of creepy theories, for example, structures. Most of the structures in the game has no explanation for its origin, like, who built the strongholds? Who built the nether fortress? Who built the end cities? Who built the ocean monuments? Or even better: what happened with the habitants of the ocean ruins? Or the ancient cities? Maybe there was an old civilization that lived in these structures, if so, what happened to then? There's a lot to theorize

I remember the chunk error video. What happened back then is was if you deleted the world save from IN GAME menu on rare occasions not all the chunk data would get deleted. But just enough for the game to think the world file no longer existed. And when you started a new world it would mix the new world chunks and the old world chunks that were not deleted properly by the game. I have experienced this bug a few times back then. A friend also got this same bug. Deleting the world folder after completely closing the game would fix it.

I think some mods today and even from back then still capture the spirit pretty well but man am I sad to think that there was a time when minecraft had potential to be bit more than 'that kid friendly game with blocks'. Pity the horror-like elements went away. Thinking about it a bit more that might be why players wanted Phantom. To recapture the scary uncertain nature of early versions.

There was a bug in old Alpha where if you kept creating and deleting workds, eventually you would see chunks from other worlds generate in new ones. This happened to me once. Made a new worle, went out exploring about 1000 blocks. I found a clear line where terrain changed, and I saw a corner of a previous base I built in a different world. It was a 6x6 chunk area. Although not to that scale, I have also experienced loading up a world that was already 'lived in' many years ago. In my case I created the world and near to the spawn was a dungeon. The thing that happened in my case is that there were already torches around, the chests were looted and the spawner block was mined. I regret that in my young stupidity I got rid of the world, for I wonder if anything else could have been found. With respect to how it happened, the multiplayer chunk save seems to be the most believable as well. It's not a stretch to think that some of the loaded chucks saved in cache could overwrite a singleplayer chunk in a chunck error. Don't forget you recently made a video yourself showing how you can be in different world at the same time even nowadays.

I kind of miss these days of Minecraft's community, where there was an air of mystery to the world, where everything was up to interpretation. Nowadays the game has gotten so big that it arguably doesn't have that same magic. It was the same with Pokemon back in it's earlier generations, where you had numerous playground rumors about locations and creatures in the game that didn't actually exist. There's just something about the early days of popular video game franchises that has that air of mystique to it, that became lost as soon as it became far more mainstream.

Survival was harder and scarier just because I knew so little about the game, avoiding online spoilers and much of the MC Wiki and preferring to discover stuff on my own, which made the then-small game fun and engaging. I hope to make Minecraft difficult and scary again (w/o relying on players' ignorance to make it work) with my WIP mod pack. My very first single player world I spawned in a deep forest, in a clear patch. I made a box house, crafting table, and a sword but didn't find any sheep to make a bed. So I stayed inside and waited for dawn. I remember peaking outside to check for any monsters and saw two white glowing rectangles, which I took for Herobrine's eyes. I left and deleted the world immediately. Now that I look back on it, I think it was probably just the sun shining through my window and making the rectangles, and I just didjt notice if before since my house was lit and the outside was not. Ahhh, those were the days.

It’s possible deadsk1nmask’s thing really was a chunk error, I remember there being some sort of bug where if you deleted a world and/or made a new world with the same name and stuff as the deleted world or an existing one (or something like that), your new world would generate stuff that was built in the other one. To be honest, this was rare for me and I may have only been able to reproduce the bug once if at all, and I’m not sure if it would generate much to this extent (for some reason I just remember it having to do with Nether portals so idk, maybe it was what I reproduced or how I heard it was someone finding a portal they built in a new world. This was far before ruined portals were added), but I definitely remember hearing of this bug at least, and how I heard of it was unrelated to the video (I didn’t know his video existed until now). Considering Alpha multiplayer had a bunch of bugs, maybe it really could’ve been a bug with server stuff leaking into his singleplayer world, too, as others suggest in his video’s comments. As for the mysteries in general, I’ll always love the Herobrine legend, I remember being scared of him and yet I still thought he was cool (and I still do). I haven’t heard of the others aside from Entity 303 (the story of which I only watched a video about recently), but they seem cool too. Man i miss these old times. I mean as a command block enjoyer, these old times in Minecraft allowed for less expression, but it was simple fun. Its funny, i haven't played Minecraft since 2021 but i stil watch Minecraft content. This game has a extremely special place in my heart

I remember that one time going for a little journey on my minecraft world in 2016. It was a peaceful evening with just me, my horse, and my pet wolf. I was walking all alone in a never ending desert that's when i noticed a desert temple. As usual, i sat my dog and leashed my horse to a fence near the temple and quickly made my way in. At first it was as usual. Just some ordinary temple.. i slowly and carefully made my way down to the treasure part and broke the pressure plate with my pickaxe. Right when i was looting all the treasure i decided to take the tnts hidden below as well. So i started to take the tnt when i suddenly found a cave below the temple.. i decided to as well start some mining since it wae deep enough for some diamonds to show up.. and then i see it.. a bunch of randomly placed red torches that filled the cave.. it only took me a minute or so to realise that i wasn't all alone.. just when i was about to turn around, a mysterious figure blew me up and i was then respawned in my own bed. I immediately took some spare armour and ran towards the temple as fast as i could, hoping to claim my stuff back. That's when i see it, the temple is one block off the ground..i was so freaking confused since i never really believed in such stuff but then the realization hit me and i went to get my stuff back. And whatdaya know... all the torches are gone.. along with the mysterious figure presumably.. also all my stuff ;-; what's even more shocking is the fact that when you're blown up by a player or even a creeper it shows it in chat.. but this time.. it only showed that i was blown up. Completely omitting the mysterious figure's name.. i still have no idea what happened that day ._.

I remember a scary moment when I tried out spawn eggs in creative mode for the first time and tried to spawn a ghast, but it didn't appear because I forgot that I set the game to peaceful, but I still heard a ghast sound effect that I had never heard before (this was when I just started with Minecraft and didn't know every sound of the game yet). Ghasts have a loud screaming sound when they are hurt that almost sounds like one of these jumpscare sound effects, and it was this sound that played at full volume, with no ghast appearing. I remember that even though I already knew Herobrine is probably not real at that time, I still thought if herobrine for a second in that moment until I realized it was a ghast sound. Also when the enderman staring sound got newly added to the game and I heard it for the first time, it was during daylight when no enderman was to be seen, but there was an iron golem next to me so I thought it was the iron golem making that sound, and I thought whata weird sound that was for an iron golem.

i actually knew the dude who created entity 303, he advertised a server on the same channel where he published the original documentaries and sightings of entity 303 and i joined and we became sorta friends, we shared skypes and chatted like 3 times in total before he kinda just dropped off the face of the earth to my knowledge.

One time me and my friend got kicked out of our realm and we couldn’t join it anymore. We could still see who was on the server and saw that there was one player active. We moved our cursor to the player list to see who was online and saw the name Null. I once heard about Null, but I also knew there was a bug in the game where signs could be replaced with four layers of “Null”, so we thought it was just a glitch. Later that night my friends avatar started jumping all of a sudden. We were curious why this happened and started speculating a bit. We always had this fascinating with Herobrine and we made a shrine just for the fun of it. Some time after that his game started glitching and his chat box automatically popped up. Without doing anything random stuff like “jeiwjsidjsowjifnjddn” filled the chat box and were sent in chat. His pc automatically alt tabbed to other applications and at one point his laptop even crashed. After booting up his pc again the minecraft shortcut on his desktop was gone. We also communicated with the thing that controlled his pc. We wrote in chat “One jump is yes, two jumps is no”, because remember, he started jumping automatically. We asked some questions like are you Herobrine, his response was two jumps. We remembered that Null person on the player list and asked if he was Null, he jumped one time. These things kept on happening throughout two nights in a row. We had some random peeps on the realm that we invited using Reddit, and had a plan. We asked if everyone online could begin shittalking Null. We said things like “Null f*ck you!” “Null your mom”, dumb stuff. His game stopped glitching and we never encountered something like it ever after that. Pretty weird story and hard to believe, I know. I have some video material of it if anyone is interested. By the way ur a real on if you read the whole story lol.

Like that wasnt ur friend trying to scare u after that glitch at the start? cmon now. Here Ill paste my story which is creepier😎 I had this reuploaded third party version of PE 0.7.3 on the amazon store for kindle cause I couldn't get the paid version around the end of 2013, it was called "Minecraft cheats". Well I had been playing for quite a while and was chilling in a storage room with chests when I saw a splash text saying "nyan_cat joined the game"; not too long before this I changed my name from Nyan cat cause the meme was dying out, so whatever joined was using my exact username. I just thought it was a glitch until I heard walking on grass outside so I hid in a corner and kept listening and it came in the room I was in and started opening chests so at that point I got too freaked, left the game, and that was the last I saw anything weird playing minecraft. Here's the thing though, I didn't have internet, I downloaded the game off my friends wifi, so theres no way anyone could have joined. To this day I think about it and wonder if what I saw was just a dream or a delusion.. cause I think I had just learned about herobrine at that time cause the name I changed it to was creeperbrine, maybe it was just my imagination?? A false memory?? like wtf

Man I remember these times, feels so long ago like a distant memory, I grew up with SlyFoxHound, ImmortalHD, and the other popular minecraft players from those times. I fear we can never have these moments again with any game, now that's there's data mining and other stuff...something can be so easily disproved if another looks hard enough and that'll be it.

I've remember seeing SpaceWaffle's video and thinking that Herobrine could of been an entity that could ruin my survival world. Also, from what I gathered as a young teen(11 - 12 years old), after the success of the video, he remained low profile, only playing games on the PlayStation(recording directly from it I think, such games as LBP3)

"Dead Skin Mask" from Slayer's "Seasons In The Abyss" album is actually the name of a song about a serial killer who believes the dead have taken his soul. The name stems from how this serial killer would cut out patches of skin from their lifeless face and build a mask of it. I believe this user referenced this song when coming up with his username, and considering the spooky nature of this myth it might make sense. You'd just have to accept how the soul of that serial killer later possessed this game but considering its popularity it could also make sense. Who knows.

Man, I remembered seeing the birth of null back in the day when I was obsessed with minecraft herobrine sightings. I initially discovered AlongCameJosh from his herobrine sightings and then saw his then-new videos on this weird new entity named "null". It genuinely freaked me out for a bit, but for one reason or another I lost interest in minecraft as a whole and forgot null was a thing for a while until this video.

There was one time I was playing on Java Edition maybe 7 years ago, in a singleplayer world in Creative mode (I was too scared to play survival back then). I was playing around in a village, making my own house to fit in, and eventually got bored of it. A few weeks/months later I logged back in just to revisit, and I spawned in underground, in survival mode, with a bunch of random items in my inventory. Turns out, I was beneath the well in the village, so I swam back up, and at the surface were several chests filled with various items. It was really unnerving. No one had access to my account. Still have no clue to this day who was on my world and how they got there.

I would not be surprised if chunks could leak like this in such an old version. However, if that happened, the chests would be empty, as chests are only synced between the client and server when you open them.

You missed an old series of videos under the KZitemr of Mark101, it is a series of jumbled videos that shows the story of a player finding weird and abnormal entities in the alpha version of Minecraft. He eventually begins becoming obsessed with trying to stop the darkness that was taking over the moon and his world, that he risked the lives of his friend just to die himself to an entity. It is still continuing with videos. It's extremely creepy and it fits the topic you're talking about.

I always thought 11 was a sound test disc. I heard it as a remnant of Alpha, possibly testing out jukeboxes, which featured a guy playing Minecraft, to test sounds. Some of the sounds really felt like sound effects have been applied to them. The section with the clicks especially sounded like some analog sound i/o switching, like an old phone network where people manually connected you to your calling destination by managing some wires. The end just felt like the guy testing more sounds, getting frustrated at something not working, and slamming the file abruptly. I've actually used 11 for years to test Minecraft audio configuration, same old sound i/o things (e.g. OBS setup), etc.

@@atanaZion Well, idk. I'll analyze 11 just for you, more thoroughly. First bit sounds like the recording was turned on, but some of the tech didn't allow it to work properly. The guy operating the setup, was just playing a bit of Minecraft to test out the sound system. I often took the wind sounds in this area as white noise and mains hum in half-disconnected wires, as it sometimes happens to even my microphone (and the reason I don't use my laptop's embedded microphone. Too noisy). Cave sounds are average, they sounded like, perhaps, earlier versions of the current sounds; maybe, they could've been played back from another library by the operator manually, to test out somewhat more complex sounds. Shuffling and clicking follows, with Minecraft still on in the background and I interpreted it as a quick reference to a manual and reconfiguration of less important analog tech wiring for optimal sound performance. The operator cleared his throat and walked to some other tech. There's nothing interesting about this, since analog technology could get quite bulky, often rooms big. Some reverb that is heard is, however, odd, but I thought that this was simply in an auditorium, cheap studio, or a combination of both. The operator then swipes through some pages of another manual, changes some more wires, and, with some new background music, returns to Minecraft and tests the audio with some walking and the placement and destruction of blocks. Hearing that the audio quality is still pretty bad, since it was actually horrible, the operator gets frustrated and shuts the recording audio file down abruptly, causing some file corruption near the end, but nothing too bad. Well, that's pretty much why I thought it was just some test audio.

Disc 11 was based off Notch’s early ideas for Enderman as there are old tweets of C418 saying he’s making enderman sounds for something, Right before the release of the disc and Enderman and we know from old Notch Tweets he was talking bout adding Enderman.
