Episode 2 of the Matches on the Map expedition.
We discover new places and sign-up new faces. The start of our journey was stressful at times as we were still finding our feet in terms of earning an income on the road, organizing and arranging stem cell donor recruitment drives and finding stable internet connections on-route.
All of the above were expected to be challenging, but without a cent in the bank and difficulty finding individuals, businesses or points of interest willing to give us an opportunity to set up drives, combined with the added new nomadic lifestyle - it gave us the push we needed to invent ways to accomplish our tasks. It was a true adventurous start and Eswatini was probably the best country for us to dive into the deep side.
Through sending out some e-mails to local attractions, events, campsites and businesses - we were able to find our first opportunities to set up our gazebo, invite locals to come out to sign up as potential donors and start making an income again through the sales of Jolandie's handmade products. Our "used cooking oil" fuel was still looking good as we had filled up the tanks and extra jerry cans in our home-town, Nelspruit, before setting off on our mission. The country offered us great experiences and will be cherished in our memories and ticked off our bucket lists!
To our knowledge, our efforts in Eswatini in signing up potential life-savers had been a "first ever" in this small landlocked country and we felt accomplished and proud when exiting the Lavumisa Border. Eswatini treated us well and its people welcomed us with opened arms. We would not have made it through, if not for those who accommodated us throughout this chapter.
Episode 2 marks the completion of the first country of the 64-country expedition and through our experience and meeting new friends it caused a ripple effect in our futures as we later again connected with some of them on the venture.
