Uncovered a childhood memory from doing the exercise. When I was 11-13 y.o., the director of the summer camp took a liking to me and during the event of "Swapping responsibilities", where kids get to take the roles of the camp leaders, she assigned me to be the director of the camp for one day. Other kids were jealous. That was a horrible day for me- I had to eat with older camp kids at a separate table away from my friends, had to handle the conflicts which I did poorly and got judged for it and at the end of the day I yelled at a kid for staying up late stating something like "As a director, I order you to go to bed immediately!!!". Got judged for it by the others. The director didn't like how I handled her position that day and when I was leaving the camp, she purposefully ignored me when I tried to say goodbye to her. To this day, I have a fear of success and responsibilities. I am very scared to step up and to even think about leadership positions. Phew. Glad to get it off my chest

Expose yourself to the good side of leadership and responsibilities, try to put yourself in their shows, find what motivates leaders, the things that drives them to strive and why they take responsibility , and the kind of good feeling the experience doing what they’re doing. You will begin to empathize with them as if you where them and with time I think that you’ll begin to destroy these negative thoughts and experiences you had For example if you’re a man, check the order of man podcast and youtube channel, they talk about responsibility in a refreshing way, also you have jordan peterson, Open-mindedness and empathy are key. I think when you begin to understand that people are different and that what people do is greatly influenced by many forces, experiences, fears and challenges they’re facing, you begin to have empathy and become open minded. For example, you can say instead of just shutting that door for me I should actually ask myself why people reacted the way they do, and say okay no one has all the answers and I accept my mistakes and will work on understanding from them so I can have more productive interactions

One thing I learned is that teaching people not to cry is extremely destructive. It's most often the process of acknowledging pain and letting it go. But what do we tend to do? Mommy: 'Ohhhh don't cry.' x 2145 times to her child. What does that teach the child? My emotions are not okay? Why not? What's wrong with me? -Child gets angy: 'DON'T BE ANGRY' -Then the kids at school indoctrinate each other further: 'Haha he's CRYING LOL' -Now look at the average adult when he feels emotions, they repress it like their life depends on it: 'swallow, swallow, oh excuse me, oh I'm so sorry, sorry, I don't know why-.. I..' ... then the other adults go: 'Is he emotionally unstable? Does he need pills?' XD
@markus4698

Good point. It's like feeling "negative" emotions is wrong/bad. People think they shouldn't be angry, sad, depressed, lonely, etc and neither should others. It's so true. I feel ashamed of crying as it conflicts with my ridiculous standards for being a "man". I think men especially have a problem with repressing emotions, generally speaking. I only realized during an LSD trip how much baggage comes with my male identity, as it temporarily disappeared.

@Words are not real When I see a man really cry, I am beset by many emotions. Firstly, I am stilled and become automatically present. I am silenced. I feel that I am the presence of something deeply profound. Simultaneously, I am horrified, awed, and grateful. I feel admiration and compassion for the individual, and grief for all the humans that have ever existed. A man's tears have a lot of power if they are informed from genuine emotion.

These vows are not always consciously made. It's just that the trauma to your psyche is strong enough that your repel, resist future situations that are similar to that original incident. Also a kid who is chronically scorned by a parent quickly develops the traits of being a life long "pleaser".

A lot of it can be traced before childhood and by genetics. Be careful not to assume that everything happened because of childhood but rather a fair amount of events and learning transpired in childhood because of how you behaved in it. We have a range of happiness determined by our genetics and that affects what we're drawn to at times and our behavior. Our environment was what it was at that time and who we were as people by each age in childhood determined how we reacted to our environment: playground, family vacation, homework, bullies, friends, sports, and the like. Let's all keep an open mind whenever we work on something or ourselves :)

another thing that contributed to this is that when I was 9 years old i got my entire class to bully one kid (and other two kids but it was less severe). to punish me, my teacher isolated me from all the other kids and forced them to stay away from me. everytime my friends tried to get close to me she would take them away. this went on for a year until i became a completely different person. She completely damaged me psychologically. I may have become a Saint on the outside but at what cost?

So I've just watched the video and have been thinking of this and applying it to my past experiences and current struggles for the last two hours. I am very impressed with this method and the instant realization/understanding I've gained of how these vows continue to affect me. One major pattern that I've noticed that likely applies to many is how this ties into judging others. For example, I can remember instances in which I've met strange people, and will think to myself "I'm glad I'm not that weird" or "I must be careful that I don't come off as this weird". However, creating this vow leads to tension in my relationships (especially with colleagues and new acquaintances) as I focus my attention on not being weird, and this also feeds into my social anxiety that others might see me as "weird". However, by training myself to not be judgmental and to see people as merely being different (like colors) instead of ranking them into groups and categories (like scores/ranks), I believe that this will help to decrease any anxiety I have about how I am viewed by others. Thanks for the great video.

I've recalled two vows of mine so far. First was due to my mom being hostile to some cultists who were recruitig people in the area. On the one hand, this wow to never go with cults has served me very well: I tend to be very suspicious not only of them, but of any kind of scammers. I just sense them a mile away now, this sense protects me very well. But Leo's insights on enlightenment have not raised any resistance in me, so good job Leo for not being cult-creepy! You really do well! Second one was to never get too attached to a girl, since I was violently heartbroken at least three times in adolescence. And guess what, it works pretty well so far, too! I've broken the chain of misfortune, got myself great girls and happily settled for one of them. This here wow eliminates any possibility of jealousy, there's just none. So I would actually advocate it, too. I haven't seen any problems with this attitude yet, maybe some are coming up, I don't know.

From rejections from people and organizations to judgments and opinions of my parents to those of my classmates and teachers, to unpleasant situations with almost anything. But becoming conscious (free?) of some of them has felt really good and it motivates me to go on. By the way, I think I experienced that "bum in the street / gotta get a good job" example almost exactly in my life. I think it must be very common. @@mominator69 If youre asking me, then I would suggest having compassion for your self and seeing why you went that route. I see in my own experience that there is always a reason for why things happen. Once you've explored the cause and effect of your choices, learn to find compassion for the choices you made that drove you into that position you find your self at. I have found that for me, compassion is the key to internal peace. This is my personal experience and opinion, and it works for me. Try it out if you like and if it works, great, if it doesn't, then try finding something else (don't expect it to happen fast, it could take time to find that compassion!). The salt and sugar of life is finding out your own way to live your life.

I've been thinking a lot about these childhood decisions and how they made me who I am today lately. Perfect timing for this video. They're tough to recall though.. Maybe you could make a video going into how to uncover some of these events a little more? It would help.

I'm in college and I feel that I make many vows now to avoid embarrassing myself in front of others. But I just don't see how some these vows I make backfire since, as said in the worksheet, that I don't have enough life experience to see the major problem. In fact, I feel that I will naturally not talk to some people avoid guilt and embarrassment.

My life has been a whole collection of childhood/teenage vows till this day and I've been always wondering is this me or it isn't and I felt so annoyed for that like not being myself, I was confused and as little as it sounds it really bothered my mind and made me kind off anxious; but now I kind off understand why I was doing all of these things. For having wondered for so long, thank you Leo, this is really the video I didn't know I needed to see.

okay, I have passed 2 hours filling in every detail of my life: my 2 vows are, fear of rejection, and fear of showing my emotions. Now I am also aware of what moments of my childhood caused them. and how I would act/feel without them. Waht can I do now, to make them fully disappear?

"Mature awareness is possible only when I have digested and compensated for the biases and prejudices that are the residue of my personal history. Awareness of what presents itself to me involves a double movement of attention: silencing the familiar and welcoming the strange. Each time I approach a strange object, person, or event, I have a tendency to let my present needs, past experience, or expectations for the future determine what I will see. If I am to appreciate the uniqueness of any datum, I must be sufficiently aware of my preconceived ideas and characteristic emotional distortions to bracket them long enough to welcome strangeness and novelty into my perceptual world. This discipline of bracketing, compensating, or silencing requires sophisticated self-knowledge and courageous honesty. Yet, without this discipline each present moment is only the repetition of something already seen or experienced. In order for genuine novelty to emerge, for the unique presence of things, persons, or events to take root in me, I must undergo a decentralization of the ego" -M.Scott Peck (The Road Less Traveled)

One Vow: when I was 12, got bullied and classmates injured my eye that made me lose some colour sights in my left eye. Immediately after I got struck I cried and the children laughed at my cry hysterically. I vowed never to cry again whenever I got hurt.

OMGGG ME TOOO!!!! I was born in Israel!!! Moved to Windsor at 3 and visited at 14. My whole mom's side lives in Israel and my whole dad side was born in Russia but moved to Toronto. I still celebrate the traditions with my family but I have practised to let go of all my beliefs completely and follow spiritual enlightenment. And I've never been happier. But then I ask myself what would I raise my children cause I love the russian and jewish culture but i don't want to confuse them.

It's funny how I'm aware of a bunch of my vows and how they hold me back but the perceived benefit always outweighs perceived detriment in the moment when the vow is activated. So these opportunities to fix issues hide in plain sight, or rather don't hide at all. They show up and laugh right in my face as I once again do what they tell me. I have a lot of old junk to clear out of the attic. A very happy Yule Leo!

! Thank you SO VERY MUCH, Leo! You continually provide so important insight and perspective to my life. I mean, I remember being 10 years old and I made a promise to myself about this one thing, and I remember thinking so: "Whatever happens, however I change, this promise is never to be broken, this thing is for LIFE!" ... and oddly, I never later questioned it, even if it was (and still is :( ) noticeably inhibiting my life. Even without taking time off from your video I can already recall so many moments you described, which were more subtle than this. Thank you so much. One day I hope I can support you more other than just by writing a comment! Take care!

This is crazy. I underwent SA when I was in high school by a close family friend & I'd found out he did it to other children & I made a vow to k*ll him if I could. When you described vows a little voice in my head told me I had made a vow as a child to Kill Someone, & I instantly thought "that's not true that's horrible, why would I- oh." & I realized that the pressure & responsibility I assigned myself to correct an unjust system has defined the majority of my anger & neuroticism. Not even like 5 mintes of watching & you just unlocked a level of my psyche

Hi there, I started on the homework assignment and I can tell you after an hour working on it: it's quite confrontational. It gave me a lot of insight until now. But for now I will leave it and continue tomorrow. I just wanted to thank you Leo for making a video about this subject. I will definitely benefit from it and understand myself just a little better. Great work! (Sorry if my English isn't correct). Take care.

Oh my god, dude. You just cracked open a can of shit in my brain that's been sealed away in a vault all my life. I've made so many of these stupid vows, it's no wonder I'm a neurotic mess. I don't have thousands of dollars to spend on therapy, but your videos are a huge help in my self-treatment.

Hey, Leo! I really like what you doing. You are probably the only person who creates such a qualified material on personal development for free on youtube. Sincerely thank you for that one and С Новым годом! What I wanted to ask is how does your current content correlate with your previous ideas of "stop caring what other people think of you" because you had a point on that, and "how does society fucks you in the ass" with Christmas that you've covered? Not sure you would answer, but if suddenly you would notice my question, would you be so kind to respond what do your think of Nietzsche and his attitude towards morals, culture, and other stuff on Philosophize with a Hammer?

Hello infinite being that calls itself "Leo". I want to say thank you. With the help of your hard worked knowledge i was able to obtain enlightenement. I was also able to discover the nature of myself and the nature of reality. I found the root. I can finally breath. My journey took me about 9 months and was filled with extremely challanging emotional work. I was able to fix all the "bugs" in my system. All those missenterpretations. I got it wrong the first time. But now i am. I went through the stages from "pretending to know anything" over "knowledge that i know nothing" to "everything is one energy that is flowing and everything i do is an expression of god. I am god. We are god. everything is god." Thank you. I want to say that every one that is reading this text is god. You are worthy. You are complete. You just dont know it yet. Just keep progressing and you will find peace. No matter what is happening around you. Don't give up. Change will happen. Change needs time.

It's fair that you mentioned there could be an entire array of vows and events that can shape one. For instance I did get into a fight once and since then promised to only use violence as a last resort but it did not have as much impact as to make me go to great lengths to never stand out at all to never get picked on.

i'm 3:50 on the video but i had to comment that i already like the video very much , throughout your channel at some points you say u might end it all, it's a possibility and i'd ask you don't, keep doing this for us you've certainly helped me it changed a lot in me to the better and even if i go back to my malpractices in a few months i'd still go self aware and i've learned the habit of reaching out to this kind of material and your channel is very diverse it has high/mid/pratical level videos i'm still at the very generic stuff but i couldn't help it to be curious to see how the higher and harder concepts looked like. so i wish you a happy holidays and thank you for the content you bring and hope you keep it comming because it sure changed me in a lot of ways and still is.
