I have bugled in more hunters than elk in my life time and realized I sounded more elk to a human than an elk. The one thing I did learn during archery seasons is if you get a hot bull and he’s bugling with your every call he is locating you. If hunting in pairs this can work to your advantage. When he bugles and you dont let him finnish , and you bugle over top of him it will piss him off and he will come right back. Now you located him and the hunt is on. Stop bugling. Set up and cow call . It works

Hunting community needs more guys like you. Too many fanboys with KZitem channels that have 60k in gear to film videos of them shooting Black bear yearlings. Appreciate your videos. From Northern BC/AB Cheers bro

I believe you hit the nail on the head when you mentioned the emotion. In my opinion, it's one of the most overlooked parts of any kind of calling. I always try to think about what the animal I am trying to sound like should be feeling and thinking. 👍

I hear ya. I actually think we tend to over complicate the complexity of animal languages from a "word" perspective. Almost like we want it to be more human-like than it actually is. BUT the actual complexity is in the emotion... cow elk really make 90% the same sound - its' just the different emotion that makes it suggest different meanings. thanks for the comment!

For sure! But if you have been using a turkey diaphragm you will pick up elk sounds quick this way 👍

So I’m an eastern it’s about turkey for me and I’ve found not all diaphragm calls work the same for everyone you have to find the one you like and use with ease. It’s probably been 30 years since I’ve listened to a calling contest because that’s just showing how many sounds they can make sound good. I’ve heard hens sound terrible but she got that tom and she got what was important ✌🏻👍🇺🇸

👍 Agree on diaphragms… mouth shape matters a bit.

I second that. It took trying about 12 different calls before I found one that fit my mouth properly. I've also found that there are some I can easily make bugle sounds with, and others are easier for cow sounds, regardless of what's advertised on the box. I damn near gave up on trying to bugle until I realized I just had the wrong diaphragm. But overall, excellent advice, Cliff.

Agreed! When I first got into calling (turkey/elk) I just got what my cousin recommended and spent hours and hours practicing and I got okay, but not great. Then I got many different reeds and played around with them until I found one that I truly like and since I already knew the fundamentals I was instantly much better.

Thanks for the videos and all the help cliff. Do you recommend night bugling for the first archery season to locate bulls before their calling shuts down early morning? I hunt in NM, in my experience the bulls stop calling 30-45 minutes after sunrise during 1-14th.

No different than duck turkey etc I have a certain way of calling but once I hear another animal make a noise I’m able to replicate it but bottom line there’s always different frequencies with all animals. Just chiming in real deal knowledge and hope more people will take calling animals more seriously. Good luck everyone!

Maybe people should learn when to use calls instead of just running around with the wind at their backs calling not paying attention
@CliffGray

Sure, I agree with that. Topic for another video… but it’s even worse if they are doing that and they don’t actually sound like an elk. Poco a poco 👍

As soon as you think you’re good, go find a herd and realize you bust yourself to the cows almost every time.
