I have a 2015 Golf TSI that I bought new. It just turned 110,000 miles. I’ve never had to fix a single thing. I just had to replace the PCV valve which cost me $150 and about 45 minutes to replace. 😁

I just did a LOT of work on my daughters Passat with 130k. She bought at 90k miles and it had pretty good oil change history ( a little longer than I would like). Inside of the engine is spotless and doesn’t burn or leak a drop of oil. I have her on 5k or less synthetic oil change intervals. Probably more than it needs but the filter is small and I would rather “overchange” than not. I blasted the valves and they were pretty bad at this mileage. I proactively did the water pump/thermo housing as well as the PVC and coils.

Looking at 1:33 in the upper right of the screen (under the logo), it appears to be a completely different design altogether. So in that sense, yes. But the question is still valid, as we don't really know yet the overall reliability of the new design. But I would hope that they had enough sense to make it more robust and/or better quality.

Great explanation on the engine but am I correct that the European variant of this engine has both port and direct fuel injection and the North American engine only has direct fuel injection. The direct-injected-only engines have issues with carboning up and require the removal of the fuel rail and injector assembly to gain access to the combustion chambers so the valves and combustion chamber areas can be cleaned. Generally with a liquid cleaner then blasting with walnut bits to clean out the carbon buildup.Needs to be done around every 100,000 KM. Why wouldn't Volkswagen have used the European direct & port injection engine design in North America? That would eliminate the carboning up issue.

You are probably referring to the 20V 1.8 turbo used in the Beetle S and GTI tuned to run on premium unleaded. This new engine is made to run on regular fuel as a base powerplant, only has 16 valves and is tuned for fuel economy more so than high-performance. VW has reserved that spot for the 2.0 liter version of the EA888

Its on the right side in the mk7s. The only difference between the mk6.5 and the 7s are the turbo placement mostly. All turbos on mk6 and mk7 are at the end of the air intake . On the 6 the intake swoops to the left in the back, and the 7 pretty much goes straight back

I use 87 but only top tier detergent gas per VW user guidelines. Sometime throw 89 or 93 but the 1.8 compression ratio is lower than the 2.0 so an early combustion isn’t as much of an issue as with the GTI and Golf R.
