Thanks for joining me today! In today's tutorial I will show you how to make this beautiful Ombre blue buttercream "Under the Sea" cake.
To start off with make all your shell and other decorations for the cake and leave to set (preferably overnight for the tall ones on top of the cake). Paint and dust as required.
Then you can start with your cake. Make sure you ganache your cake and leave it to set. (here is a link on how to make ganache and apply it to your cake • Double Barrel Buttercr... )
Make your buttercream (here is a link for this: • Buttercream Icing - ho... ) Once you have made your buttercream, divide it into three. Colour your first batch with your preferred colour gel. Remember to only use a drop as a little goes a loooong way! (I used Sugar and Crafts Aqua from their Kolor-Burst range of colours). Once you have reached the desired colour, take a spoon or two of that colour and add it to your next bowl of white icing. Mix this until all combined. You can also add flavouring to each bowl to take it to the next level of yumminess! (Flavour Nation Blueberry flavours were used in this video). Your icing is now ready to apply.
Follow the video on how to obtain the ombre blue effect (start at the top with the white icing, then pipe the lighter blue in the middle and lastly the darker blue at the bottom)
Cake "'sand': Don't throw away your cut off's when leveling your cakes! break these up into chunks and lay on a baking sheet lined with baking paper and bake in the oven on a low temperature (90 - 120C) for a good few hours, checking them from time to time. When they are all dried, allow to cool and then blitz them in a blender - and there you have your cake sand!
Apply a thin layer of piping gel around the base of the cake on the board and carefully add your cake sand. Then decorate the cake with all those beautiful shells you made!
