Most hammock campers are very familiar with this knot as a marlin spike hitch. The way you’ve demonstrated it is a variant of a slip knot and an important part of a trucker’s hitch. You’re absolutely right though, totally underrated!

Hi David! Nice, I had to google marlin spike, something new to me. I knew the truckers hitch, that is a really handy one for guylines! Have a nice time, Papa hiker

Hmm, as a young boy-scout I learned this knot as the 'lasso-knot' sometime in the mid seventies in Germany. With thinner rope I find it hard to untie as it can really become very tight. So have abonded use for many years. Maybe I need to re-evalute and very much like your quick-release version. Thanks!

As far as I have been ably to find, most of the suggested names below are alternative designations to what's I would call "a noose knot", "the noose knot" or simply "noose". It occurs at least three times in Ashley book of knots (under separate numbers). But if that is what you're aspiring to make, you are actually doing it wrong. The rope of the bight should enter/exit "the circle" on the same side (below/above) of "the circle". It is of course possible that your iterationen has its own designation. I'm not sure however if your way of doing it holds any benefits over the more conventional way of tying it. Nice channel. Kind regards

A similar knot with all the positives that you mentioned is the evenk hitch (I call it the donkey hitch and I’ve heard it called the Siberian hitch… ) it ties with a lovely fluid motion, it always ties as a quick release. It’s my ‘goto’ hitch for tying to a tree or tarp… plus it can be tied with a ‘long tail’ quick release…meaning you can throw your rope over a high branch, tie the hitch down where you are, run the hitch all the way up to the branch, and pull the long dangling tail to quick release. I’ve never known it to come undone, even in storms. Give it a try and I think you’ll love it.

Hey Papa. I like the hell out of it. GREAT KNOT and I don't know what to call it yet but I want to name it. A "Dutch Hitch"? Well a start. THANK YOU SO MUCH. Going to all it to many knots I constantly use including the Tugboat Bowline

This otherwise known "Canadian Jam Knot", would not be my knot of choice in the Tarp arena. Hands down the "trucker hitch and toggle are the one that are practiced in this craft would use. Canadian Jam Knot are just the trick for lashing or bundling a load of sticks and such. Canadian Jam Knots are usually used with small cordage such as paracord.

The knot is called a Marlin Spike Hitch or a Slipped Overhand Knot. If you tie the knot by tying an Overhand Knot on the standing end there can be two different outcomes depending on which way the working end goes around the standing end. If you bring the working end through the loop to complete the overhand knot the knot will become a stopper knot when the loop is fully collapsed. If you bring the working end around the standing end on the outside of the loop to complete the overhand knot then the knot will disintegrate if the loop is fully collapsed. Something to consider when tying this knot.

Just use the arbor knot. Then no worries about it slipping. Same knot as this but add an overhand knot on your tag end. Arbor knot was designed to attach fishing line to the arbor of your fishing reel. It's also called the Canadian jam knot I think.

Used that knot a lot in my life. My dad called it the "Lazy Noose" Which kind of made sense to me, a proper hangman knot is very different.
