Thank you for this documentary. I grew up with Underdog. In the early 1970s, my sister and I would get up at 5:30am (central time) on Saturdays. That was when Davy and Goliath came on. Jot was at 5:55am. Then it was Underdog at 6am, and Rocky and Bullwinkle at 6:30am. Then, network cartoons started at 7am. Such good memories! At first, we had only a black-and-white tv, but eventually got a color tv about 1973 or 1974.

It's funny how that everyone assumes that parents can't or won't look after their small children so we can't show an energy pill for Underdog, because the children aren't being carefully monitored. Nonsense. Stop taking on responsibility for someone elses kid unless they ask you to.

I'd love to know just when they came up with that origin story, because Batfink ended his series with an episode that revealed his origins in 1967. It's cool to hear and you did a great job on making those images, but I have to admit I think that Batfink has a better origin story.

Another 1960s character who got super energy from swallowing a pill was Roger Ramjet. His was called the proton pill. In fact, it was mentioned in the closing theme: "When Ramjet takes a proton pill, the crooks begin to worry; they can't escape their awful fate from proton's mighty fury ...".

I also grew up with the original "super energy pill" in the 60 and, like you and several other commenters, it never occurred to me to take random pills in hopes of gaining super powers, probably because we weren't that stupid, even as kids.

I grew up with Underdog back in the 60s---when I heard they were making a live-action movie, I cringed. And justly so. Remakes, particularly remaking beloved cartoon characters to fit into the "real world of flesh and blood" hardly amount to any justice. (Unless, yes, you're a product of that particular generation---you'd think it's the bomb. For us "Old Schoolers", let's NOT do a remake and SAY we did.) I watched bits and pieces of the movie, and the only part I rather enjoyed was Underdog and the three super-powered German Shepherds---it almost reminded me of Superman and the three Kryptonian villains from Superman II.

When I first heard they were doing an Underdog movie I was excited. I pictured them bringing back some of those old characters - Riff Raff, Simon Bar Sinister etc... But I had the same reaction you did when I heard it was going to be live action.

@@TonyBoyOhBoy Hey, Tony---thanks for the reply. Yes, alas, a live-action movie didn't quite make the grade for me, either. A cartoon movie would be exciting---I even had an interesting storyline, (being a writer, myself) for a possible action-packed, animated Underdog movie, involving: Simon BarSinister, Overcat, Irving and Ralph the two-headed dragon of Zot, (since I write about dragons), and the Flying Sorcerers.

"Unless you're very young" you assume everyone's heard of a cartoon character from the 1960s ? I mean, I was born in 1977 so I know Underdog, but I work with kids today who have never seen Back to the Future. I could spend all day Monday trying to find someone in my building that remembers Underdog, but I'd probably only get about 1 or 2 people. And good luck finding people under 30 who know what TV Guide is.

I would emulate taking a pill, as Underdog did, to "pretend" to acquire super-powers---the pills were Sweetarts candy. I'm no genius by any means, but even as a child I knew taking "unknown pills" could be dangerous. (Of course, a few years before watching Underdog, and swallowing a bunch of Children's aspirin with the orange-coated flavoring; then having my stomach pumped----MAY have had something to do with future decisions growing up.) Who knows, eh?
