I find it helps me fall asleep honestly. I couldn't begin to tell you why, though. My only guess is that during that time of my life, if those sounds were going on but it was far enough away that we could have people sleeping you know you had multiple others pulling security so if something did happen you knew you had time to get your gear and weapons to respond. So in a way, it's like thinking about having security around you vs home alone without having windows blocked by sandbags, hesco and concrete bunkers plus armed security to keep threats away (at least long enough). In the civilian world we don't get security while we sleep. We have easily breached windows, doors, and possible threats all around and we're vulnerable.

@@SonOfTheDawn515 no, I get it. I find it oddly relaxing, too! I meant, war vets with PTSD though, hearing the distant gunfire and stuff. lol

@@SunBunz Exactly what I was talking about. So, if gun fire is off in the distance and outside of your AO (area of operations), you're not on QRF (Quick Reaction Force) and your position is not "code black" (everyone to a position to defend your FOB/COP/OP/etc) then it's as "normal" operations. Sleep isn't something you get much when deployed (mileage may vary depending on military job and specific location) but you tend to try to sleep when you can and it's not some 8 hours of blissful rest when you do get the opportunity. Without going into more details or just to summarize - if it's far enough away to not involve you or your unit and there's no higher ups having you geared up, then it just means it's not your problem, guys are on guard and gives you enough time in case it becomes your problem.
