I think it was similar in the UK. I was born a decade before you, but during the 80s it started to become the norm that one full-time wage couldn't support a family and a mortgage and so most families then had two working parents. So we kids would spend more time in the woods, up the mountain, and yes in the shopping mauls which were also a new thing. We spent more time unsupervised making our own meals etc. Debt also was a factor as before the 80s we didn't have credit cards and HP. I was a Green Day fan and love the melancholy sentiment in this song but I was more a fan of the Seattle grunge scene.

Greenday are just one of those bands that keep on going and going they'll still sell out stadium's for years to come, you will forget how many songs they made that are absolute anthems and within a few seconds of any of there old tracks you'll be singing word for word.... Cheers for another great review of an amazing band

@Steve Parker I agree, also born in the 70’s, the 90’s was more about shutting us up or getting us out of our parents hair. They had so much to deal with re: your comments on finances etc. Fill the kids with pop and Ritalin, TV, playing in the street. At least we can drink wine in peace. Or playing in a band in a mates garage, screaming at the top of our voice about the barrage, of neglect. I hope I never connect.

Agreed, I think there's a documentary about the new anti-depressants that came out at the time, due to the family environment breaking down. It's called Generation RX and documents the problems with big pharma selling psychiatric drugs with side effects to children. I think that's a big part of the explanation for the grunge scene also, it was a cathartic scream of adolescent discontent, please excuse my flowery prose :P

@@steveparker8065 I tried for a while. To be honest about 20 yrs as a guitarist but my flowery prose failed to make a mark 😂😂😂.

I was born in the 50s, my son was born in the early 80s. He introduced this band to me - and I love them. Just some of the most intelligent political and social commentaries of their era.

Amazing song, one of my favourites from Green Day, you're right about it being underrated.

If it wasn't for stiff little fingers there wouldn't be a green day

You just reminded me, I haven't listened to Barbed Wire Love or Tin Soldiers in a long time. Loved SLF back in the day so going to watch a couple of their vids :)
