Thanks Lynden for simplifing this for us all. I've been running away from Altered scales for years. Completely unrelated but there is a band here in Dublin called THE BLADES. They had a huge hit with a tune caĺled Downmarket with some lovely brass and great alto sax solo. Worth checking out on youtube.

I'm a long time pianist before sax. Honestly I nerver though like that. I think strating diminushed up to third and tone after. Your method is so easy! And thumbs up because you did not used your thumb during the scales on the piano 😂. Thx for the video ❤

At last a KZitem musician has shared the simplest way of working out altered scales. I have been showing this to players for decades and could never understand why no one seemed to latch onto this online. I know that you Lynden teach people about the modes of the major scale. If you start with C Lydian and add one flat at a time you go all the way to C Locrian. Is this as far as you can go with flattening each step of the C Lydian scale? Actually no, you can also flatten the fourth, in this case the F becomes Fb (enharmonic E). This is now the altered scale, with every note except the root altered (hence the name). Can you flatten the root C? If you did you would get Cb and every note of the scale would be flattened so you would have Cb major scale (B major). This explains why you can derive the altered scale from the Major scale a semitone below the root from the root as Lynden explains so clearly. Since it is also one flat more than the locrian mode that also explains the term Super Locrian. Ditto for the Diminished Whole Tone nomenclature- first four notes diminished scale then the remainder form the whole tone scale. Deriving the altered scale from the major scale also keeps the focus on the tonic of the chord as opposed to alternatives such as the seventh mode of the melodic minor. Once you have the altered sound in your ear just forget about how you got there and just enjoy playing it (to paraphrase Charlie Parker!)
