Tips for selecting the biological filter media for our aquarium. Aquarium biofilter media are classified based on the presence of bacteria that they can hold, mainly aerobic bacteria and anaerobic bacteria. Aerobic bacteria can colonize easily on the surface of the most common bio-media, while anaerobic bacteria require a different environment to thrive and can only be grown deep within the media. Bio-media that supports anaerobic bacteria growth is more expensive than bio-media that supports only aerobic bacteria growth. Both aerobic and anaerobic bacteria are necessary for an aquarium for the efficient completion of the nitrogen cycle. Aerobic bacteria break down ammonia to nitrite and then nitrite to nitrate, while anaerobic bacteria break down nitrate into nitrogen gas. If there is not enough presence of denitrifying bacteria, nitrate levels will not be effectively reduced and frequent water changes will be necessary. The presence of both types of bacteria is important for keeping the water clean and healthy for aquatic life.
