I think to many people miss the point that dietmar hopp stands for modern football and the corrupt German FA. 2 things that work straight against passionate fans. You can see it at Bayerns allianz arena where there are only a few persons that come to the arena every match. The crowd changes from game to game. That's not how football is supposed to be. Football is a local thing that works with the local community and aims to satisfy the fans that support the club in every time of their life. But that's not the case in most bundesliga clubs anymore. The clubs shifted this task to the fan groups and are only focused on making enough money to get the big TV budgets. Now the clubs and dfb started to work against these fan groups who represent the club in the local community. Without these fan groups football clubs loose their purpose and become something like an international entertainment network. That's why Ultras and other active fan groups try to fight against modern football and the German fa. Dietmar Hopp and his club represent both and therefore are a target of these groups. Why use such strong language? Because otherwise nobody listens. Everybody just ignores it and pretends everything is alright. I support Evey group that uses their power to fight for their believes and their right to support what they love.

No, it is not. That's the difference to EPL football. You exactly hit the point. The EPL follows the American path, where all "big sports" are thoroughly commercialized. Surprisingly, fans accept this as long as they can boast of some trophies that "their" club won. And they call it a joke, if other people set their priorities differently.

The supporters have an opinion. In any free society, they should be able to voice their opinion if it does not reach into race or violence. The owner has a business. He has a right to kick people out for being out of line. Shutting down the game over a banner is soooooo weak. And just speaks to pompousness of the society(many different segments on the word society).

This is not about speaking your mind, its not a problem at all to criticise certain developments in the Bundesliga or Hopp, it is more like a question of how you do that and there are plenty of ways to express your concerns outside and inside the stadium. But if you raise a banner with Hopps Face in the middle of a crosshair, this is no protest this can be interpreted as a death threat, and this is not tolerable and that needs no further interpretations, analysis or opinions and it is for good measure forbidden by law, and not protected by freedom of speech/opinion. Just like calling someone a SoB is a defamation and no protest.

I disagree with Gab. I’m from Germany and I think the bayern munich players showed great character. What they were actually protesting against is not only Hopp, but DFB. The DFB gave Dortmund a collective punishment (Kollektivstrafen) for the same abusive banner targeting the Hoffenheim boss, which forbids Dortmund fans from going to Hoffenheim to support their home team for the next two seasons. That explains why the “Hopp SOB” banner repeatedly came up during other Bundesliga fixtures last match day, like a coordinated act of protest (as a matter of fact, it could possibly be one.) We might as well look beyond the incident and connect all the dots together to see the whole picture here: German football fans hate Hopp and Leipzig for breaking the 50+1 rule, some clubs wish it scrapped for more sponsorship and spending freedom, and it all boils down to the perennial discussions around this very rule unique to the German league. The DFB did what they had to do under the current framework and regulations to punish the ultra fans, but one day they will have to give a really careful consideration to this 50+1 thing: commercialization or convention?
@yougothere6000

The German referees react the same way regarding racist incidents at a Bundesliga match. But it's that this new rule was introduced just a few days ago and they introduced that law exactly because of a racism incident! And before this new rule even existed a German referee already stopped a match in the German 3rd division 2 weeks ago. They also introduced such rules in Italy, Netherlands and France thos season. Seems like you're confusing England with Germany. Just read up on it on the DFB homepage. Very bad journalism of you.

You are wrong my brother. The players did the right thing. Don't expect everyone to follow your perspective in not standing for what's right. You sound as though you've been paid to speak the way you are speaking. You can't say "why didn't they just send security to remove the banner"... It's a cause all are standing for... Not personal vandats.
@dominikzettler3927

I don't say the fans are wrong, but the insults and disrespectful banners are not the way to protest. They disrespected the game of their team as well. Dietmar Hopp made his mistakes but without him the region around hoffenheim wouldn't be the same. The DFB made a big mistake by breaking its promise not to use collective penalties, but to insult a person - no matter who it is - like this in public is just pathetic. There were many great protest banners before which were creative and reached their target. And yes, now this standard has to apply to racist insults too. There are no excuses now. We made a first step to stop listening to such insults but frankly on a not so suiting occasion.

I see nothing wrong with this these guys are dumb to say the least. If players and fans don’t protest no one will because at this point clubs are money making machines . Clubs will not interfere with their own way of making money. Also at this point no new club will be able to compete with the likes of Bayern real Barcelona Manchester United. Money needs to be invested. And even so money doesn’t guarantee title or success. And especially progress. Investing in the right people does, soccer has gone down dramatically not in fans but in quality and the new rules Changes are stupid.

After all we should not forget that football is a business! Investments are the base of it. This counts for very single club (and may it just be sponsors). Fans that ignore this are blind-sided. ANY kind of intolerant or abusive should be handled equally strong until we finally have a better fan base! Also, the players of Bayern couldn’t live the life they do without big investments from companies and singles persons.

I'm curious, wasn't Gab on the air not that long ago rightly criticizing Italian league fans for being petulant, yelling derogatory things at black players? Now he's a free speech absolutist? @yougothere6000

The Bayern players HAD to do that! It's all due to the German FA's new rules. It's a new 3-step-protocol. 1st step - make the crowd aware of the issue and give the fans a chance to stop their hate-speech behaviour. 2nd step - stop the match and start a stadium announcement. After the fans have removed the banners/stopped the hate-speech, the referee is supposed to the start the match again. 3rd step - referee suspending the whole match and delaying it to be played at a different date and time. Because the Bayern-fans did not stop their hate-speech. They were at the 3rd step and Bayern and Hoffenheim agreed to not delay the match but at the same they still wanted to send a message against hate-speech. First time that thise 3-step-protocol was used was at a racism incident at the match Müster - Würzburger Kickers. Referee stopped the match, police was called, guy was removed ffom the stadium and arrested.

The reason why it is escalating now is because the DFB (the German Football association) sayed in 2017 they would distance themselfe from collective punishments (meaning punishing the entire fan block for individuals), however the DFB broke their promise with the collective punishment against Dortmund's fans. That is the real reason why it sparked so much anger among fans across multiple clubs. We also have seen fan "protests" in the Union Berlin fanblock in the game against Wolfsburg, not just protests against Dietmar Hopp but also protests against the DFB. The DFB pretty much single handily caused the whole situation to escalate even further intead of deescalating the situation.

And I’m not saying that the offensive sign is fine because is not (even if this guy deserve it) but just let the referee and the Bundesliga handle it not you!!
