Join us as we delve into the world of ovarian cancer, exploring its statistics, trends, and the latest advances in treatment. Ovarian cancer ranks as the fifth leading cause of cancer deaths among women, surpassing all other cancers of the female reproductive system. The lifetime risk of developing ovarian cancer is approximately 1 in 78, with a lifetime chance of dying from ovarian cancer being about 1 in 108. (Note: these statistics do not include low malignant potential ovarian tumors.)
This cancer primarily affects older women, with around half of the diagnoses occurring in women aged 63 or older. Additionally, it is more common in White women compared to Black women.
Over the past two decades, there has been a gradual decline in the diagnosis rate of ovarian cancer. The incidence rate declined by 1% to 2% per year from 1990 to the mid-2010s and by almost 3% per year from 2015 to 2019. This positive trend can be attributed, at least in part, to increased oral contraceptive use in recent decades and decreased menopausal hormone therapy use during the 2000s, both of which contribute to lowering the risk.
Furthermore, ovarian cancer mortality has seen a decline, with the rate decreasing from 2% annually in the 2000s and early 2010s to more than 3% annually from 2016 to 2020. This decline reflects both decreased incidence and improved treatment options.
