Mechanical equilibrium refers to a state in which the net force on a particle or a system is zero, leading to a condition of stability and balance. In classical mechanics, a particle is considered to be in mechanical equilibrium when the net force acting on it is zero. This concept extends to physical systems composed of multiple parts, where each individual part is in mechanical equilibrium when the net force acting on it is also zero
.
The condition of mechanical equilibrium can be further understood in the context of thermodynamics. In a thermodynamic system, mechanical equilibrium is achieved when there are no unbalanced forces within the system or with its surroundings. This includes the absence of pressure gradients within the system, indicating a state of balanced forces and stability
.
Furthermore, mechanical equilibrium is characterized by the absence of mechanical work being done by one part of the system on any other part, signifying uniform mechanical properties throughout the system. This uniformity contributes to the system's overall stability and lack of changes, as opposing forces cancel each other out, maintaining a state of balance and stability
.
In summary, mechanical equilibrium represents a state of balance and stability where the net force on a particle or system is zero, ensuring uniformity and the absence of unbalanced forces or work within the system
