The presentation will begin with a discussion of the reasons for which we use medications in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). A brief description and sketch of the brain and the five dopamine pathways will be provided. A photo story will be used to explain how psychotropic medications work in ASD. The role of two common medications, aripiprazole (Abilify) and risperidone (Risperdal), will be discussed. The presentation will focus on the role of these medications in managing irritability, repetitive movements and aggression. The presentation will conclude with a brief discussion of other classes of medications typically prescribed to individuals with ASD.
Presented by Dr. Jerean Casey Grau, BCPP MS.
