PvP really needs to be addressed. I used to LOVE space PvP! Now, it's just P2W console clickies. Nobody even wants to PvP now. It's unfortunate, and I hope they implement more of it. I agree with a point system for PvP. It could possibly add points into buying non-dilithium upgrades? I think that would make sense. The stories need more work, I agree. Utilize the Foundry authors as actual staff members. Those stories are better than Cryptic's. More exploration would be nice. I hope the best for this game. I really enjoy it from time to time, but I would like to enjoy it more.

I don't like the queue based endgame where you need to rely on other players wanting to play the samething you do at the same time you do. Waiting for an hour for a queue to pop only to see "could not start because because not everybody accepted" is so damn frustrating.

I agree, it would be great if you could do "queue's" using your bridge officers, if nobody was around, then at least you could do something instead of just sat around waiting for people to join a queue. At the moment this would only work in ground queue's, but it would be nice if you could get bridge officers to command starships as well

The biggest problem I see with STO is the Multiplayer part of MMO. There just isn't any. There should be 'Raid' like missions for fleets; for example: 16 players enter a space map and have a big space battle then half the force needs to land on a planet and take out multiple objectives while the other half defends the space area. A 'Boss' needs to be taken out on both ground and space for the end. At the moment you queue, you kill a few enemies, the end. Boring. They introduced fleets and armadas yet how many of your players use the Fleet Starbase as a hub? I'm betting none, everyone still uses ESD. This is supposed to be a galaxy and everyone hangs around Earth?? For me, STO is a cash cow for PWE and all they are interested in is bringing out another lock box.

Basically saying "Cryptic does not care about what the players want now, only works on it's own projects, slaps them on the server in a halfly done state and goes for the next" would have done it in a way. It's very sad but them going back and give what they promised or fix what they broke only happens if it is very severe or if they happen to remember it in a major patch. Was surprising enough that they recalled the existence of pvp for 5 minutes when making Season 13. And then forgot about it again.

Some of the missions and one queue in particular was so repetitive and unimaginative, I wonder who was designing this stuff. Then, you get a piece of work like "Midnight", and you have hope that something great will happen.... Season 13 and the Balance Pass comes, but Borticus himself admitted that it wasn't a complete balance pass because they didn't look at some mechanics and weapons in game..... Then, there's the line of "Your investment in gear would retain its value". Biggest loss of value was the Plasma Explosion consoles (which I do not use). They did need a fix to reduce the absurd proc rate and shield bypass damage, but not to the point where it does craptastic damage AND the threat scaling is horrid. I am "pissed" about something I don't use because this is a huge example of the type of "balance" that comes about. Overnerfs and overbuffs force people into one direction for builds. Proper control of abilities and effects to keep them equitable to each other within a performance delta from each other gives people options for viability AND consistency in mechanics across all levels of play. I think that was one of the biggest hooks to player retention that STO missed out on multiple times.... the general player base looked to the all-star players for viable builds, saw limited options, and when the big names left, some of the players left with them. It started in the PvP community, and now the PvE community is feeling that effect affecting them. I live vicariously through SoB for STO content. He's one of the premier players in STO, as well as a good guy to know, and I miss playing with him and a few others in game, but I am done giving Cryptic my time and money while getting frustrated on how easy it is to fix most of the glaring and long lasting issues that has plagued this game.

Bort lied to us plain and simple, alot of our gear that we spent so much time grinding and upgrading to epic is useless. and they practically killed off the dps channels. There's really not alot of build vids being made and it sucks to have all that time invested to just have it taken away.

"Here, have one new mission and a lockbox. See in a few months! " It's just not working anymore. Our armada used to be very busy. Now you can log in at any time of day, even on weekends, you'll never find more than 5 people online. We have 1497 members... I^m partially blaming the console release. It took away a lot of ressources and funds that would have been better spend on the PC version.

Tinnie here. Answering the last question, no. As a fleet officer who left before the Delta Rising, the loss of player base and poor endgame support along with the really grindy nature, simply burned me out. The game felt more like a job. Post Delta, I just didn't have enough interest to re-tool and re-grind for a good T6 build.

The odd thing about season 13 was that the Nerf was actually a massive Buff to myself and a few others i know because we all quite liked using hanger pets so the Hanger pet Buff really helped us being in the realms of doing an extra 20K DPS just from hanger pets so one or two good things came from that round of balancing.

The game started to go down when the update system came in. I watched a pvp player video, say he threw $200 at a build. How are people with limited amount of funds able to compete with that. I watched another pvp player video and he had every reputation space gear to epic and about 5 to 6 different sets of beams all epic, most of his consoles where epic. As well as all the top end traits. IE you have to shell out MONEY to buy the ships to get the traits. The Zahl Heavy Cruiser ship trait being one of them. How can we compete against that. Now for some of my pvp experience. I will go into pvp with very rare gear. i don't give a shit. I am there just for fun. One day i was told to go away because the other team kept on targeting me. I told that player to fuckoff. He said some thing along the lines "we trying to play this game with 4 players please leave". At the end of the game there was one player with more kills than me he had 9 kills i had 5. No other player had any kills in the team i was in. when i backed out of the game my team got no more kills. Go figure that. All i had was a gravity well torp build a few epic pieces, but mostly very rare . the one who told me to please leave had no kills and 2 deaths. when they started to target him he backed out. With attitudes like that you wonder why people don't play pvp. Question how much money will you throw at a build? As for pve i am disappointed. that people will not play for fun. It takes to much to upgrade and as for weapons upgrading and it, is random procs is one of the reasons why people are reluctant to upgrade to epic. I wait to for upgrade weekends before i upgrade. and just so you know i do throw a little money at upgrades. Star trek online is now a play ground for people who have plenty of money to burn. With regards to pvp if they broke it up to level of gear, IE very rare, ultra rare, and epic, people might be encouraged to play PVP again. IE you can play pvp without the need to spend shit loads of money. And when you think you have a decent build you might also be willing to upgrade. Before the upgrade system and ship level increase how much money would you have to shell out to play and enjoy the game?

Thought I'd re-listen to this broadcast. Thanks SOB. I realized the thing that kept me coming back to STO in the beginning was the content-as you mentioned. BUT, what I really miss is all the buzz around DPS and DPS channels. Things were lively and bustling ships and upgrades and getting better DPS. But save for a handful of die hard STO fans that facet seems to be rapidly cooling off like a blown out ember on a match. In my mind that's what kept the STFs lively -- even with poor rewards and incentives. And, I'm not sure exactly what happened there but I heard someone or a small group of "somones" yanked mostly everyone from the DPS channels--and I've never seen that high level and volume of communication since then--coincidentally around the time of Delta Rising. No one should ever have that much control over the game to be able to do that much juvenile damage to a loyal STO player base--ever. Apologies if I'm stepping on someone's toes here. I like the new content release for Deep Space 9 and I'm slowly convincing myself to enjoy that content. I am amazed there, it was more than what I anticipated--but seems a little too little--a little too late--with way too much console focus in-between (i.e. Agents of Finished it in a Day). Without some sort of creative engineering, I'm not sure that STFs and space maps can ever really be revived. Like "I think" you said, their old stuff is collecting dust and that's exactly what it feels like--dusty and stale. All I really see for the game now are the seasonal summer/winter events and new content releases - and no one really collaborating MMO style whatsoever. I'm glad, however, that the developers seem genuinely excited about the game and it's future. That gives me hope.

I agree 100% with what SOB is saying. I've been feeling this pretty much since DR. Once upon a time, I'd spend just about all my "disposable" income on the game willingly, I'd look forward to it. I thought I was being rewarded with decent content, story and an enjoyable game experience overall. SEVERAL questionable decisions and directions later, paired with the current state of the queues, gives me great pause now when considering spending any money on the game. It seems to me that the game has become more and more "chance" driven, with lockboxes, crafting and upgrades. The continued "story" has become foreshadowed by all this chance driven "content" in my opinion. I don't enjoy gambling either with my money, or with my even more valuable commodity these days, my free time. That being said, I really did enjoy Agents of yesterday, for a while, but good new content only gets you so far, it's got to keep going. REALLY looking forward to the new expansion regarding the dominion. Praying it gives the game the much needed boost of excitement it needs. We need better rewards, less grind, less gambling and last but not least - better story driven content. Also - we need a game where you can still be competitive and have fun in queued content, without all the latest high-end lockbox offerings, or all this, or that epic stuffs.

I agree with your video 100%. My wife and I have both been lifetime members since 2013 and have spent a little money on the game from time to time. Mostly at this point we just grind it out to get what we want in-game. We can't see the point of putting any more cash into something that seems to be doing imo, a tail spin. We use to play about 10 hrs or more per day (I am retired) but now only 4-5 hrs due to lack of new things to do. We spent many hours getting our DPS up to competitive level only to have cryptic take that all away with season 13 launch. Now we have spent many hours researching and a hell of a lot of assets building a good pvp ship only to find out that there aren't that many players in the game that seem to want to do pvp. I think that a lot of that is due to the cost of being competitive. Cryptic please fix the broken things in the game before you bring out more content that doesn't work. I just feel that it is a damn shame because they really have something special here but all they care about is making money and they don't care how they do it. And to hell with their players, they don't have to listen to what we want or what we have to say. How much more of this kind of disrespect to it's fan base can this game handle before it just goes away. Very sad! Live Long and Prosper!

Well New player perspective w/disclaimer: I began playing the game right at launch, for a day, and then many ‘life events’ occurred and all these years later I discover it as a download on a console (I bought on a whim) I’m enjoying a lot about the game, but have to admit I find it almost odd that it’s a MMO. I’ve not yet ventured into PvP, and embarrassingly enough, don’t even know how to. I only began the PvE stuff a week or so ago. Beyond that, ‘other players’ are more or less just ambience to me. Ambience that I have to occasionally rely on to activate one of two or three queues that anyone is willing to play. In fact, if I even see any of the less popular events queued I join it just to shake things up. As for PvP, I don’t think I have an interest. It’s more or less just a fact in every game that plenty of people have an advantage and I don’t have the time, will or funds to invest. More or less, I mostly don’t want to be painted in the corner of ‘optimization’ and would rather be creative with my loadout. As for Duty Officers and Admiralty, I think theyre great additions to the ‘atmosphere’ of the game. Managing your crew, and also getting some use out of all the ships in your yard as an actual fleet for an admiral? Excellent touch. I do feel the Duty Officer system would be better if it required some thought or strategy, and maybe I’m missing the nuance of it. TL;DR: new player happy, game is fun for newb, not a very multiplayer game, not spending money.

For new players, things are fun because it's all new to them. Once you've rolled characters in all factions/alternate starting experiences, none of that is new anymore. Add to that the grind for end-game completeness, like having all Reps done, for both gear options and to just have something to work towards. Making a new char isn't that appealing, once you've done it a few times.

I made some ACCx3 weapons recently to attempt PVP but the urge disappeared before I had even got them on a ship. I'm just logging in daily now to refine the surplus dil mountain. Seems like that would be a good way to get Foundry Missions accessible from your ship

I occasionally come back to STO, start grinding out Dilithium and some research, but always get burned out and leave again. I don't buy that Cryptic has ever been more than half-heartedly invested in this title. This has always been obvious to me, from the poor implementation of star cluster exploration (now gone), to the complete lack of anything to do for the KDF, to the abysmal ground combat. This was stuff from release that just hasn't changed much. The R&D system received a major overhaul, but it was turned into a time gated grind which I suspect was intended to flush dilithium from the economy. It's true that the story missions were pretty good, but even that, in my opinion, never constituted an acceptable amount of content to flush money down the toilet on this game. Once lockboxes were introduced, that was the point I refused to ever put another dime into this thing. It's a predatory practice that should die in gaming entirely, but the player's too readily support the practice. Anymore, STO is merely a Star Trek theme park with no real direction. Come in, do some space combat, which is one of the few things this game ever really had going for it, then when the grind sets in, which will happen sooner rather than later, leave.

To me it appears Cryptic have this mission statement when it comes to this product and that is "if we can do half a job then its a job well done. This game and i.p deserves so much more but we are stuck with a company that is either underfunded by its parent company PWE and thus explains why the game is in the state it is, or the people making the decisions at Cryptic have no understanding of what makes a good MMO and need to be replaced.

The problem with sto is that there is not enough content and the rewards for queues suck. Also cryptic's retention tool seems to be making ships with build defining traits or consoles be given away at the summer/anni/winter events. By punishing players who miss out on these events and newer players they are saying they only see us as cattle to be squeezed for dollars. The phoenix box is literal bs they made to try salvage the game when the dilex went to 500:1. With it they killed the upgrade market and also the hope of ever getting event ships on an event. Sadly when it comes to space games the only other options are eve and battlestar galactica and well star citizen. All with their own p2w problems

I don't play PvP so I cannot comment there but I do play PvE from time to time and they have been dead for sometime unless it's a featured one. It seems like to me that the focus is mainly placed on lock boxes and new ships instead of content.

Winter event is up right now, so you do a daily race for 25 days on one character, and you get a T6 Breen raider unlocked for all of your characters. The game is completely different from what it was back then. There's plenty of content to go through, the issues are just at the endgame. Depending on how far you want to take the endgame, it can be very costly.

I guess I'm the small minority that doesn't mind the state of what's happening with STO since even though I am in a fleet I just play this game as you describe it as a "Mobile phone" since I don't really have much time to play this game as much anyway and I'm fine with that. In fact even though I would not do the lifetime sub I would do a monthly one which is fine by me... I'm not the kind of person to complain about a game "not doing well to everyone's standards" honestly if there is something about a game that I don't like not then I just stop playing it plain and simple it's not like I'm forced at gunpoint to play this...

I agree that season "Nerfteen" is thee worst expansion ever.Although it promised to bring "Balance",It leaves many in a state of quandary, and disarray.I spent a good chunk getting my weaps to a decent dps factor.I'm glad pvp is back, but again, they didn't think this one out.And as you pointed out the queue system is fuckin horrible, and everyone hates it soo bad that people cringe at the thought of being team leader.

PvP was back for a week or so, then died out as quickly as it returned post-S13. New huge balance issues popped up that pushed returning PvPers right back out.

Some PvPers have come back and enjoyed it. But this game overall is pretty stale atm, and there's not really any new content set to bring people back until far into next year.

There is an even larger grind now. And you're investing into something that has less than ~50 active people. There's only a few premades around, so even doing premade vs premade is rare.

Nice video, you've nailed it but you were a bit too nice. It is the worst free to play game at the moment, trust me when I say this, don't waste your time on it, everything has a price tag on it or farm and grind endlessly, no real endgame content just unlocking gear, upgrading gear and do the same queues over and over again to test your dps, there is no point. PvP is dead. Queueing for most PvE maps takes a long while. Playerbase is 600 people daily and nearly 2000 weekly for pc, it's pathetic. The episodes are fun, not always great and regularly just clicking those annoying text pop ups away but ye it is fun when there is action, the storyline is decent as well. Really enjoyed the Iconian chapter. However waiting for new episodes to get released takes 3 to 6 months, they have the worst updates in the game, last season was only 1 episode and 1 PvE map and the rest grind and farm features. How dare they call it an expansion when you are done in a day and feel bored again. Overall it's a time consuming mess, a lot of grinding and farming and then you got the lockboxes which people like to call scamboxes, every freaking month they have a new 1. So much wrong with this game and the devs they don't ever listen, they shit on their playerbase. The same shitty server since the game got pulled out from beta back in 2010. Lag, rubberbanding, glitches, bugs, disconnects etc etc. are common things in Star Trek Online. Don't Waste Your Time on this pile of garbage!

Multiplayer wise this game is the worst ive seen. I love PvE queues except that cryptic after 8 years didnt implement a dynamic queue system where each playthrough is a bit different (ie random objectives) and how they literally implemented a new PvE menu while the old one worked perfectly just lacked big icons of the rewards...its not the menu that needed fixing it was the queues. This game is like an openworld multiplayer singleplayer game. They have so much potential. Like for gods sake they could remove admiralty and add much more rewards to PvP to get people to play it. The game wont survive if there is no one to enjoy it with. In 8 years i prob read 7 missions from beginning to end because the damn animations cutscenes and scripting is worse than a blender animation that can be made in 15 mins. As much as i like STO its just a game in which we grind like retards expecting to have fun in the endgame when there is no one to enjoy killing except more grinding enemies

Star Trek can't have main focus on dps or grind,it will fail and been failing seen Dr was introduced ..All Started wit DR best expansion ever(sarcasm).Drops should come from Qs or Raids or even selected foundry missions not from crafting.I don't play game anymore but buying new ships and doing same missions over and over again is boring as hell.Game is now on lifesupport I don't see salvation because Cryptic doesn't care anymore(fact).People will wait because the invested time or money into this game but truth is STO is going down slowly but sure.I have installed the game few days maybe week ago(not sure) and after 3 hours I had enuff.I got Zen,ec,Dill. But there is no reason to play this game anymore.. .RIP STO.

i wont spend money on the game because we haft to wait weeks to get what we buy now? screw that. dont need to spend money on it anyways. the game is worse now anyways. cant tell what missions people are waiting to join anymore. i see thats still on your screen. so upsetting. when i play episode missions. i dont read anything. i press F like crazy skipping through all the text. every single time. then say to myself "come on you wind bags, i dont have time to read this crap". cuz is too much grinding. thats all it is is grind. i hate how we dont glow red or blue or purple anymore. purple from the intel skill. gives the 20% shield pen and armor pen for 60 seconds. we used to glow purple when that was activated. which was kinda cool. also the risian birds would glow the color red if the tac team skill was used. strike team 3 i think? or blue for scientific aptitude. the whole team or all friendlies would glow this colour. indicating that skill is already in use. but now there is only one glow color. orange. so you only think engineering team skill is running. so know you cant tell. you want to activate yours anyways whether or not its already running in effect wasting it. in the process of ruining this they also ruined the risian birds. which took them over a year to fix. (without the glow of course) what kind of asshole sees something kinda beautiful, kinda cool, then thinks... "wait a minute. thats not right. we gotta fix that right now." probably someone having a bad home life and taking it out on others wherever possible. thats a jerk move in my book. i bet the people that didnt like the look of it probably also never play ground combat either. bastards. yea as you can tell from a rant like that, that i will never be spending money on it untill i get that glowie back, right, correctly, on the birds too, the way it was. my friends and i online will joke about craptic. "its time for a hangin" "craptic couldnt fix a straw if it were bent" "suddenly suicide bombers make sense" "every patch they break something else" "one day a patch will ruin the game forever" "do they test these patches on the test server? or is the live server the test server?" my fleet mates are at this moment talking about nerfs... that shouldnt even be a word. could care less about pvp. thats just internet speed vs internet speed. screw that. too many skills. there should only be the players skill. if i cant shoot my enemy in the eyeball or the knee caps. well then were not gonna be concerned with pvp. i have War Thunder for that. my only 2 mmo games. and War Thunder is nothing but PVP tanks and planes style. so i get way too much pvp from 2 missions a year on that game. now i hate pvp.

Your view is incompletely accurate. MMOs are in steep decline and it's not just STO. True Cryptic has made missteps, but even if they hadn't the decline would still be happening. What the entire industry is doing now has been to re-focus on building a constantly replenishing supply of new casual players putting in a hour or two a week and a few dollars here and there. The port to console, the skill rebuild, the infinity boxes, the phoenix event, the admiralty system, the AoY alt start faction, the endeavor events, the increased ease of getting in game currencies, and the re-balance all have as their focus bringing in new players by making STO more approachable with lots of shiny distractions. AKA efforts to keep the game profitable. Every other MMO is doing the same things. Next summer something is happening with the Dominion and given the status of the Dominion being stated as an "Alliance" faction in the current arena event it's most likely they're going to be a new sub-faction with a handful of exclusive and cross-faction missions as well as opening up the Gamma Quadrant. More shiny distraction. Or possibly a new take on the end game. I don't expect any reason to go hard core into any MMO until Blizzard figures out how to fix the current industry problems - I say most likely it will be Blizzard because they have the most to lose so they are motivated to take risks and spend money in an effort to fix the problems. STO has never been all that profitable and keeping it running at an increasingly minimal level is all we can realistically hope for.

Delta Rising killed STO. Their will be no "help" from Blizzard fixing the mmo market, because the Diablo 3 Staff inside World of Warcrafts Team is killing WoW know. The only good examples coming to my mind are Final Fantasy XIV Online and Guild Wars 2.

Delta Rising was a mortal blow, but it was what brought me back to the game. Challenging well written episode content and a reason to shoot for a power build rather than the ample rare IX budget build I was using when I originally stopped playing.
