Understanding the Beneficial Role of Pacifiers for Michael Michael’s continued use of a pacifier is a beneficial tool that helps him regulate his sensory systems and reduce stress. Often, children on the autism spectrum use their mouths to explore their environment and cope with sensory overload or needs. While this behavior may seem harmless, mouthing objects can pose safety risks, as objects could contain harmful chemicals or be choking hazards. Michael is a severe chewer but does not have Pica. Pacifiers provide the sensory stimulation he needs while being safe to put in his mouth. In many cases, they act as a “stopper” to prevent him from mouthing harmful objects. Recently, I shared that we had a breakthrough with his Chewleries, specifically the Tube Chews. While pacifier use is still a necessary tool in supporting his overall development, I am happy to update that he now only uses the pacifier when we can't redirect him and he starts to chew on other objects and fixtures. Percentage-wise, it’s now only about 30% of the time that we need to resort to pacifiers. This change has also saved us a lot of money. We used to go through an average of four pacifiers a month due to his aggressive chewing. Multiplied by almost five years, that’s a significant amount of money spent on pacifiers.😮💨 #parenting #autism #ASL #signlanguage #nonspeaking #nonverbal #autismawareness #autismjourney #neurodivergent #parentingtips #representationmatters #cute #handsome #toddlermom #autismadvocate #autismparenting #parentingautism #communication #inspiration #motivation
