Some key things about the Ford 4 speed automatic transmissions; 45 mph is the most common speed where the overdrive lockup is designed to engage. Ford also has been adamant about owners NOT using overdrive for towing. When these transmissions first hit the market in the early 80s (yes they have been around that long) Ford had a lot of issues with the torque converter vanes getting shredded when owners towed on overdrive. The P71 uses either a 4R70 or 4R75 (the later more heavy duty version) from the factory. The other Panther platform cars (civilian CV, Grand Marquis and Town Car) used other versions of the 4 speed automatics, but were not the 4R70/75 versions. You can replace a P71 with those other versions without any big hassle, but they will be less durable and do provide softer shift points. Leaving a Ford 4 speed auto in drive is useful if descending down a long hill or in twisty backroads because you will be able to use dynamic braking of the powertrain. In overdrive the vehicle will basically coast/freewheel. Using 2nd is helpful in slick conditions when starting from a stop because the transmission will absorb more torque from the engine than if you had it in 1st or drive (which starts off in 1st).

The original transmission in this line was the AOD, released in 1980. It was modified in the early 1990s with electronic shifting, becoming the AODE. Then it got upgraded again, this time the gear ratios were widened out and the resulting product was called (at first) AODEW (then later) 4R70W. The W indicates the Wide gear ratio these have. The 4R70W transmission was modified in the early aughts with the addition of a magnetically inert sun shell and an input shaft speed sensor (turbine speed sensor) and this transmission is known as the 4R70E. Variants were given hardened planetary gear setups and were known as 4R75W/E. This is simplistic but this is pretty much the difference between 'models'.

I turn OD off at 80mph. Enter a freeway with it off. At 60mph, you can feel the car spring forward with plenty of pedal left.These cars are tuned for upper to top end power. From a dead stop the rear wheel horse power is almost non-existant. The reason for this is to prevent wheel slippage during aggressive take offs. (2008 S.P. Unit)

I always turn over drive off if I’m driving in the city and going under 40mph. The reason being that when over drive is on, it tends to keep shifting back and forth from 3rd gear to 4th with just a tiny change in pedal pressure. Saves a lot of transmission wear by not doing those unnecessary shifts every time I give it a little gas. It just stays in 3.

I have to respectfully disagree , I drive a 99 & a 06 Grand Marquis and when below 45 mph OD is off (button on gear selector) when going from 55mph to 35mph entering a town ,school zone when my speed drops below 45 I shut OD off with the button it acts as a engine brake and helps me get down to 35mph without any brake, when leaving 35 going back to 55mph I turn OD on again . NEVER EVER pull out to pass @ close to full throttle with OD on . If you pass HARD throttle with OD on the transmission will drop from 4th to second and that is way to hard on the OD band . If you pass @ hard throttle with OD off it shifts from 3rd to second at some point but not necessarily immediately. This is the way I drive and my trannys never have any issues . Each to their own . God Bless !!

I am tempted to try a full tank of gas without using overdrive just to see what happens. Because I do find a lot of situations where the transmission is in 4th gear and instead of downshifting to 3rd, the engine just revs up and slips at the torque converter. Then if I push the O/D off button the revs drop and the car has more power.

@WJ Handy Dad, I grew up with a bunch of mechanics. One thing that i was taught, every engine has an efficiency range, where it is maximized. For instance i used to have a Mazda B2200 2wd truck with a 2.2 engine. It's most efficient RPM was around 2500 RPMs and loved to be reved over lugging. Short of using a dyno, i just played it by ear and seat of the pants driving. I got 24-27 MPG, treating it like a race car. I sold it to my father and he complained of bad gas mileage and a horrible spark knock, things i never saw. I asked him how he was driving, he said he run it like his last car ('93 LTD crown vick not a cop car), which had a 302 V8. I told him that it liked to rev and run lugging it was not good. so he threw me the keys and said show me. So i showed him, revving to 4k per shift and generally driving like a sports car. after that he bragged about 25+ MPG. till he sold it. The point, is in the city you might gain efficiency, by dropping out of OD. It all depends, on how your car wants to be run

I run OD in mine all the time, no real reason to turn it off unless I am climbing a 6% or greater grade for a long distance. That final 'shift' when in OD is engaged isn't the trans shifting into OD - that's already happened by then. It's actually the TCC locking.

Constantly shifting between 4th and 3rd by the the automatic trans in short intervals will generate more heat and shorten the life of the transmission, however the P71 has a trans cooler. @@adrianparedes6082 It's a roundabout way of saying when your OD goes away. It's usually a failure of the direct clutch that causes it. OD fails first, then 3rd goes out. Slipping in OD is like having your trans in neutral hence "self modifies into a simulated neutral condition". When the trans slips in OD but still works in 3rd, if OD isn't disabled you will put your engine to the rev limiter once it shifts into OD - possibly causing valve train damage to the engine.

I think that can wear it. I dont think youre supposed to move the shift lever down while the vehicle is moving (just press o/d off thats fine while moving but better to be off the throttle and not above 100km/60mi while disengaging O/D) Up from 2 to D is ok
@zekeholloway4413

P77777777 you can, moving it into a lower gear won’t hurt it. what will hurt it is if your going 60 mph and throw it into first or second gear, but i don’t think the transmission will actually select the gear until the vehicle slows down enough that the RPM wouldn’t damage the engine. same is true if you try to select reverse while moving forward too fast, it will go in neutral until it’s slowed down enough to engage reverse.

I drive mostly in 3rd gear which I manually shift down to but I got an 2008 Grand Cherokee V8. I will say, in 3rd, you burn more gas up & if you're up for optimal performance, when I drive in 3rd gear, there is a huge difference in performance of course than if I were in 4th or 5th gear. My vehicle is a 5-speed auto/OD transmission so I know it's not a Crown Vic but transmission rules are the same for all cars with automatics, mostly I believe.

No doubt the cars are more "responsive" when not in overdrive. Is it worth the extra gas burned? I guess that's up to the person having to pay to fill up their tank.

OD off disables the torque converter lock up ( behaves as direct drive) It will go into 4th gear with OD off. Although 4th gear is technically an overdrive gear. Overdrive means the crank shaft is turning slower than the drive shaft. It will shift from 1st to 2nd when the shift lever is in position 1. The 2nd gear lock has been a Ford tranny property since Ford has been making automatics to my knowledge.
@mrdiplomat9018

Mark Hebel That’s not true...my ‘07. CVPI will lock up the converter in 3rd gear with O/D off. It pulls quite nicely in 3rd locked up to about 50mph, where I engage o/d manually.
youre right...converter lockup is like explaining magic to these idiots lol...they dont understand that unlocked is a **torque converter** while locked is direct drive...if you try to leave a stop light in locked, youll see just how gutless the 4.6 really is
@ismann9148

TC locks up before O/D in third. O/D OFF has nothing to do with TC lock up. O/D is a separate gear which allows the driveshaft to spin faster than the input shaft.

And i can get much better economy when i shift manually, I start with car in first gear and O/D off, then to second, then put to drive, then when i get to desired speed,,let off gas and press overdrive button. It this harder on the transmission in any way? Because i can actually get much better mileage.

Ive heard many times before, not sure if completely true, that with O.D. off the trans will also stay in each gear longer, shifting at a higher rpm to assist in tow or heavy load apps. This will in turn keep the trans running hotter and is not recomended for this trans.

@WJHandyDad
4 жыл бұрын
you may not be wasting gas - I've noticed when I hit hills, sometimes the car is revving higher in O/D than it does if I switch to 3rd gear. The torque converter doesn't seem to lock up very often in O/D and thus the revs are artificially high. There isn't a right or wrong answer, we can all drive our cars how we want - I made this video because at the time, there were a ton of questions about it on Facebook and a lot of wrong info being presented. So I presented what is in the Ford owner's manual and police interceptor supplement.

Selector in first gear vehicle stays in first gear but the selecter and second gear the vehicle will start in first gear and then change to second gear but no other gears besides those two put the selector in 3rd gear will run up to 3rd gear put selector in overdrive it will run the first three gears and then go to overdrive if needed.

It seems to me that these don't downshift quickly enough when you "floor" it to pass someone, so yes, pressing the OD off button forces a quick downshift. I've done that a couple times when it seemed to not want to downshift (or to avoid it downshifting all the way to 2nd gear, which seems to be the M.O. for the P71 transmission)
@thetinpin

As in you can't shift out of park? Sounds like the park interlock (it looks for a ground when you press the brake pedal). Since most (all?) police cars have the brake wires cut when they are in service (to route through a switch to kill brake lights and even possibly a "secure idle") it's possible they did a poor job re-connecting. I'd start at your brake pedal and look at the wires and switch above it and see if there are any that look like they need a better job being connected.
