Because regardless of whether or not there is a treaty, Pakistan can cry to China at anytime. If India acts against Pakistan, it will have extreme difficulty criticizing China for doing the same thing at international forums. You are right that China never follows rules and always violates agreements, but the reality is they still have far more international influence than India. So far China has tried to dam the Indian rivers but it has also somewhat restrained. Is there ever a case where a side gets something but says no to it? The expression "both sides honored" doesn't seem appropriate in this context. Now check the situation on Brahamaputra. Does China ever listen to us on the fair sharig of water ? The world just works like this.
@JohnSmith-vn8dm
Жыл бұрын
China has barely started on the Brahmaputra because China's greatest fear is India might fully enter the US sphere, and the US and India are its long term strategic competitors in the new cold war. However if India is more aggressive on water issues with Pakistan, they will cry to China and China will take advantage of the situation to retaliate with its own extremely aggressive water control. India will have difficulty criticizing this on the international stage if it does something similar to Pakistan. India has to accept that China is its greatest enemy, NOT Pakistan. And India also has to accept that it is at a massive disadvantage vs China in terms of economy and international diplomatic heft. So unless India is willing to strengthen its foreign alliances or wait decades for the power disparity between it and China to shrink, it has to be cautious about how it acts in the region for now. Its important to take a long term view.

Myself Being a resident of kandi area drained by Ravi and Chenab , I would like to highlight thatanother main factor on the basis of which the partition lines were drawn by Radcliffe committee were the irrigation canals developed during the British times. The regions between these so called eastern rivers known as Bari and Rechna Doab were divided such that very few canals would cross borders. In this time of 60 years Indian side have interlinked the eastern rivers with meagre waters to flow to pak. Considering the bias it’s high time to revisit the treaty now. Another point is that as we can see in the Shekhar Ji s map Beas is already draining into Sutlej well before it crosses over. So effectively we are only in control of the two rivers out of five draining into pak😅. Excellent decluttering shekharji as always👍🏼

Shekar ji... The water volume of brahmaputra coming in from China is only 20%.. remaining volume of water is fed into brahmaputra by the tributaries in india China cannot threaten water security of the northeast

Thanks for describing the latest development on India Pakistan water treaty and disagreements. However I liked the muffler story because this human to human reciprocation reflects sweet bonding that we admire and cherish.

Nehru was over generous in allocating 80% of water to Pakistan in the Indus Water Treaty of 1960 . Maximum water for Pakistan should have been less than 50%/ India should seek a review in her favour of Indus Water Treaty. But for the present India is taking the right steps well within her rights in the Indus Water Treaty i.e. Stopping totally the waters of River Ravi by constructing Shahpur Kandi Dam and dams on Ravi’s tributaries like River Ujhh and River Basantar . Construction of maximum number of hydro electricity dams / navigational facilities on Rivers Chenab , Jhelum and Indus and also utilising fully ,for irrigation-al / drinking water purposes, India’s small share in these rivers.

We are continously power and energy hungry... Pakistan can no longer hold our future hostage.... Pakis have no money to build any dams.... Let's go ahead and build the dam in super quick time

What were the compulsions that drove India to sign IWT when no such agreement exists with China? What would have been the implications of not having the IWT at all? I wish SG had addressed these issues. Earlier podcast by Swami was a total disgrace.

Agree to disagree... China is building a dam with huge reservoir in South eastern Tibet... They are already doing what they can... Indus river tributaries have much more water than chinna can hold even after making Tibet a huge Lake... We are limited or bound by our inner calling... We can absorb much much more water in Punjab than we are using right now.... Do we do it or not is another question... If we can buy Russian oil, we can very well manage not listening to or unilaterally changing the indus water treaty... You are kind warm man sir... :)

If IWT is amended to decrease Pak's water flow to 10-20% it will be good for Pakistan itself - floods possibility will decrease. Not to mention Pak doesn't even need so much water. As for India, IWT needs to be changed before Pak becomes part-part into Bakistan. Then we can separately do dealings with Sindhudesh, Balochistan and greater Afghanistan.

1:38 treaty has been honoured by both sides? What exactly could Pakistan do otherwise? India is on upstream side.. One sided instigator of wars is Pakistan and one sided honouror of treaty is India.

The point is that China will do what it wants anyway whether or not India abrogates the Indus Water Treaty. Just because India honors the Indus Water Treaty, will not make China suddenly want to follow international norms.

Yaar, if you read the notice sent by India, you will see we intend to ABROGATE the treaty, not do chai-samosa meetings. Pakistan has two options--say Ji Huzoor or legally be at India's mercy for water going forward.

It's hard to have a high estimation of people who founded and then led this nation. No wonder China and SEA raced past.
@JohnSmith-vn8dm

China raced past for 2 reasons. First is it fully embraced capitalism under Deng Xiaoping (their most brilliant leader) unlike India's half hearted socialist reform measures. Second reason is they were never afraid to develop deep relationships with other countries. China was first a strong ally of the USSR, then the US, and now they are going back to Russia. India was non-aligned the entire time out of fears that others would be "unreliable partners" while China was allying with them, reopening benefits, betraying them and then starting the process with someone else all over again!

To improve your reach may I suggest you should do CTC in Hindi also, You will do really a favour 3. Going by the numbers which you mentioned, India's share of water is miniscule compared to Pakistan,'s Did Pakistan had a better of us ??? - Any expert view on this

We Did not amended Indus water treaty for 75 years Becoz our fight Was against Pakistan establishment Especially Army ISI Not against People of Pakistan. But now for Economic development of kashmir & India it has to be !! Becoz Pakistan never built Sufficient Dams or reservoirs Most of water from Indus water treaty Is Following to Arabian sea Without its usage for Agriculture & industrial purposes
