Hello Jimmy, your statement "most northern limit where Syrah can grow" is probably a bit outdated ... e.g. Switzerland (Valais, Vaud), Germany (Baden, Pfalz) and Austria (Wien, Burgenland) produce excellent syrah wines

Hey Antoine - I agree with you. This is L3 syllabus for WSET, and in places it is a little dated. I think WSET would argue that the northern Rhone is limit for commercial growing (in terms of sizeable volumes of quality) where as all the places you mentioned the volumes are still very small. Wines of Germany have no data for Syrah which would suggest a very small amount - the same for the Swiss too. I would love to have some hard data on the volume grown in both of those areas though - have you got any?

@@WineWithJimmy Yes you're right of course I guess north of the Alps is still difficult. Switzerland has 200ha of Syrah (2% of all vines) source: blw.admin.ch; Austria has 150ha (0.3%) source: oesterreichwein.at; Germany has only 50ha (as of 2012;) source: lwg.bayern.de
