We all know this game's plot is fantastic. But WHY? Let's try and find out. Like Nitro Rad on facebook: / nitroradofficial Megalovania Cover - • Undertale - Megalovani...
One thing about the genocide route that I think is interesting is that it's not just hard, it's not just a lot of work, it's *not fun*. It's specifically designed in a way to be unfun, unsettling, to deter you from going through with it. Sometimes the last few monsters in an area can take 5-10 minutes each to spawn. You're just running in circles, hoping for a fight, and listening to the extremely dark and unnerving music that plays while you do it. The game itself is trying to get you to quit, and you want to quit, but you don't. The game realizes that being a bad game isn't enough to get you to quit, so it starts to become difficult and unfair. Undyne and Sans both take many many tries to figure out (for most people), but lead many people to actually try harder so that they aren't beaten by the game. In the end, if you beat the game, it's because you are so stubborn that you can't accept backing down even when you're wrong. You have some idea of what will happen and why you should kill everyone, and nothing can sway you to change your mind. You're in too deep, you might as well finish the job.

Snowflake Productions I also think that the game could work as some sort of Homestuck-style interactive comic, but it also should be re-written from scratch. Just the painfully obvious video game-specific deconstructions gets in the way; but they can be replaced.

I'm guessing since you didn't mention it that you never accidentally killed Toriel, because it's a mindblowing moment, and ties in with your point about loading being bad. A Froggit tells you that you can make a monster sparabale by weakening them enough, and this is the only fight where acting does nothing, and mercy doesn't _seem_ to work, but if you do this on Toriel she suddenly takes like 3000 damage at 1/3 health. If you reload the game and try to save her, Flowey calls you the fuck out with "You murdered her. And then you went back, because you regretted it." I'm sure many people figured out the mercy path by themselves, but two of my friends and like, five LPers were just fucking told they have to mercy.

if you think about it, the genocide run is a .exe creepypasta. the main character kills everyone, it addresses the player asking for their soul, joke characters like sans not only are important to the story but also have a dark explanation to their actions, sans' being he knows about all the resets and feels terrible about that. there is "realistic" blood, or ketchup, coming from sans when you kill him. the villain begs for mercy but you kill them anyway and once all of this happens the game is tainted forever

(Spoiler) . . . . . I think my favorite thing about the game is that the happy ending in the game has you REBUILD the fourth wall by contextualizing game mechanics in fantastical but non-meta ways. You aren't saving and loading, you're distorting time. Your file name isn't your name, it's the name of the first human to fall into the underground. The act of saving is not saving your game, it's saving yourself and those around you. To ultimately save this world, you have to be willing to accept that this is a sheltered environment and needs to STAY a sheltered environment, and that now that the problems are fixed, you just close up shop and leave. Meanwhile the bad ending involves stripping away ANY in-universe context and whittling the game down it its bare-bones mechanics. You essentially dehumanize the game itself to numb yourself to the concept of destroying it.

One thing missed for the Waterfall chapter: the reason the war happened was actually listed along some of the walls. The whole thing about monsters being literal creatures of pure arcane energy, while humans are pure physical matter. Monsters were able to absorb a human soul to grow exponentially in power (though not enough to really survive fighting humankind), but seven gives them the power of a literal god. That's what humankind feared, and why it happened. The deal with Asriel and Chara happened years after the war ended.

Eventually, Sans directly offered me to stay underground, with all those monsters I got to know and love. And you know what ? I agreed. Because, either way, and no matter what... I'LL NEVER SEE THEM AGAIN. Just like that, I became Sans 2.0 on both sides of the screen. I am glad I got over it.

I don't understand why people would dislike a game just because of its popularity. It's like not wanting to eat a certain kind of food because all the people you know love it. Doesnt even make sense, unless you want to feel special. Undertale isn't even an online feature. Just play the fucking game and make your own opinion, guys. I've also come to realize that for every Undertale fanboy I've seen, theres been 50 guys complaining about Undertale fanboys. Huh. Seems to be pretty avant-garde right now. Lastly, one should mention that +NitroRad deserves at least 5 to 6 figure subscribers. The production quality and the well-scripted finish on your videos is outstanding! Keep it up!

@WMan37

+IIIRobIII Perspective is an interesting thing. For every person complaining about Undertale, I see 50 undertale fanboys dogpiling them in the comments. To counter your metaphor, I'd say it's more like going to a fancy restaraunt, having a whole menu to choose from, but everyone in the restaraunt is screaming about how good the meal is. You don't doubt that their signature steak is to die for, I mean, the entire restaraunt can't be wrong, right? And they're not, but you didn't come there for a steak, you came there for a creamy chicken alfredo. You'll have steak when you're hungry for steak. When even the waiter insists that you should buy the steak instead of the alfredo and everyone does this every single day when you just want to try different things on the menu, you'll probably try the steak eventually but you won't enjoy it as much because you were essentially coerced to try the steak against your will via peer pressure when you would have gotten around to it eventually on your own volition. They didn't even wait for you to buy the steak on your own, someone in the place bought you it on the house, cause it was just that good. The worst part is not a single person in the entire fucking restaraunt realizes or cares what this does to your overall enjoyment of the steak, they're just happy you got to try it no matter the cost. If you complain that someone gave you free steak when you weren't ready for steak yet, they all call you a "Food troll" or some kind of derroagtory statement. It's not that the steak was popular, it's that you just didn't want steak yet and you were tired of hearing about steak. The undertale fanbase unfortunately mirrors the mindset of certain cartoon fanbases. Undertale ended up being the best game I played in 2015, but I feel like I would have enjoyed it much more if A: The oversaturation of it on the internet never took place B: As soon as I booted up the game I got 9 (Literally nine, I'm not exaggerating or making this shit up) of my friends screaming at me to go pacifist instead of finding out the consequences for myself, ruining almost the entire emotional impact of Toriel and various other "What have I done" worthy scenes C: I didn't see parallels with the Undertale fanbase with certain other fanbases. Because of this, any time you wanna talk about undertale with someone, you have to apply an asterisk clarifying that "Yes, I know the fanbase is fucking terrible, and I hate that. It makes me feel bad for enjoying this game knowing I'll get lumped with those people." Basically you have to go full tsunderplane. The beginning of the video is pretty accurate.

+IIIRobIII It's probably because of hype culture, mostly, because of all the hype of the game, people build up the game for something that it's not really it and they get mostly dissapointed in it, or probably because people tell you that you have to play it and you have to play it in one way when at the same time they tell you that this game should be experianced blind and that basically ruins them the game, a very good example in my opinion is projared's let's play, he just looked so bored and annoyed by the game, and it was kinda not fun to watch him suffer because of the fanbase forcing him the game and forcing him to play the pacifist first try insted of getting to sans after killing a few enemies and saying WOW lvl stands for this and EXP for that? holy crap!

***** I agree, i don't think anyone is forcing people to play anything, but the game being spoiled and people trying to hold your hand, making your experience the other persons experience. I saw NitroRads review and bought the game knowing I could spare peoples lives, but I probably would of killed the first boss of the game if my friend wasn't breathing down my throat telling me "don't kill goat mom" or telling me to waste my time to get some armor that will make the game more easy than it is. I doubt people will ever keep their moths shut on the internet or in person and with every new thing, it's almost impossible to avoid spoilers. I had to disable most of my messaging apps to avoid friends spoiling the game, but damage is already done. Even though my friend meant no harm. I still was upset he spoiled even a few parts of the game...

You know, it's been a while since I've played Undertale, but I thought the events of Asriel and Chara (the PLAYER's character) took place after the introduction's war. Didn't Asriel need the human soul to pass through the Barrier, which would mean the war between humans and monsters started far, far before then? Another thing I'm surprised you didn't mention is how the PLAYER/YOU are not actually in the game world. When you go down the True Ending path, everyone refers to your character as Frisk--and Asriel talks about how PLAYER/YOU was some sinister force that wanted to harm others. It also ties into a Genocide playthrough text-blurb where it pretty much implies that Chara died long ago--which would mean you're controlling a dead body (hence the closed eyes).

something someone mentioned that I really like is the game sort of teaching you to becoming a more patient and forgiving person. each opponent becomes harder and harder to spare as you continue the pacific route, but you do it and it feels satisfying. in real life being a good person doesn't always give you that immediate satisfaction, and it is twice as hard at times, but in the end it dos become worth it and I feel like the game was sort of giving a nod to that fact.

This is a good review BUT I need to say something with sans, he’s actually the weakest enemy, having 1 attack and 1 defense, as said when you choose, CHECK. He’s “powerful” because the damage stacks on top of each other. That’s why he’s throwing EVERYTHING at you, because he’s WEAK. Which I love. Good review, I just had to point that out :3

The most interesting thing is the view on curiosity, many players say that they would never do a genocide run because they fell in love with the characters... yet they seek the videos on youtube. I know this is an old video but, considering the phrase "selling your soul to the human that ruined everything", I think it's a bit more complicated. Chara isn't really a bad character here, it's only our actions that shape them into a good or bad person, despite what Asriel tells us about them. I remember a really good analysis on Chara where it was speculated that they actually follow Frisk from the beginning of their journey and that they are that commentator that voices our every observation. Frisk fell into the Underground, falling precisely onto Chara's burial place, thus, possibly, fusing with remains of Chara's soul. They observe our journey, our every step and action and in the end form their own opinion. In the Pacifist run, do the monsters and humans deserve compassion and living in peace? Or in the Genocide run, is it best to wipe them all out because they are all a waste of space and undeserving of love? We shape them during the progress of the game. So, in the end, it's us, the player, the human that ruined everything.

I just recently finished Undertale and came back to watch this video... It was a fun time! You know, there are a lot of games where you can do a pacifist run, but in so many of those games you have to restrain yourself in order to do said pacifist run, it was not exactly 'coded' into the game if you know what I mean... In Undertale you can actively be good to your would-be-enemies as a game mechanic, and that's what I liked about the game the most, it not only allows me to be good, but it makes being good a fun thing to do! It's not fun not to kill enemies in most other games, in Undertale that's the whole point!

13:09 I know it doesn't really matter now... But just in case there are any new people watching this video who don't know the full story: I'd just like to point out that Asriel's death is NOT what sparks the war between humans and monsters. (Not sure if you intended it to sound like that, but that's how I took it, so..) This is why Chara kills their self. So Asriel can take their soul and become strong enough to pass through the barrier. (Where the plan was to collect the rest of the human souls needed to completely destroy the barrier.) The war started because humans found out that monsters could take their souls, which is something humans cannot do. Humans got scared, tension rose, war broke out. Humans, being stronger, won the war and trapped the monsters underground. Later on, the first human fell, and the story of Undertale begins. Sorry for the mini-rant. I just felt the need to correct the possible misunderstanding... Otherwise, love the video! ^v^

I just want to say, this kind of video is exactly the reason I subscribed to this channel. It's one thing to talk about what a game is, what it has, what it does, whether it's enjoyable or not... but it's another thing entirely to talk about why. Why the game is, why it does what it does, why it is good. Far too many people skimp on answering this question or even skip it entirely, even though it is the most important question, for both the creators and the audience. I have to respect the amount of work you put into analyzing the "why" of things, both as an aspiring game designer and a life-long fan of video games. That's the reason that I'd watch any video on this channel, even if it's about something I'd otherwise have no interest in. This comment ended up being kind of a ramble, but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate the work you put into not only this video but many of the other videos on the channel as well. 22:54 (Unintencionaal 'Well, ACTUALLY' moment) It's interesting how subtly the game teases you the no mercy route. Gerson does that while explaining the Deltarune (not the game), as the Angel making the Underground 'empty' could have that darker interpretation. Also, while Flowey guides you towards the true pacifist, Sans may by accident guide you towards the opposite. Sans's call may vary depending on witch main characters died, hence motivating new runs. Also, after the second meeting on the hall with sans, he will start judging you depending on your level; from LOVE 14 on, he says something like your very bad, and even isn't as much evil as you can.

There was always something that struck me with Toriel. The way she handholds you, the way she babies you, I feel it was the intent for the player to feel smothered by it and want to leave. Heck, the first thing the game expects you to do once she leaves you in the hallway is to ignore her instructions and proceed forward. The whole time I felt grateful and loved by her but always at the front of my mind was the thought "what about my real mother and my real home". I really think that is the depth/tragedy of her character, she tries so hard to hold the children close to her that it pushes them away. Ironic then that one of her best friendships is with someone she can only talk to through the separation of a door.

I find it amazing how many people have come up with different interpretations about this game. Like how one person looked at Undertale through the problem of our attachment to fiction. Even when people are on the same track--like you and I about the game's focus on choices--we have different ideas of what the game is all about. When I look at the game's idea of choice I see something much more sinister than morbid curiosity. I see an awareness of the player's control--in game and outside of it--that sheds a light on how terrifying having the Player's abilities have an effect on a game's world. The ability to save, rewrite, and even replay the game. To kill some, to spare others, or to kill them all, and then imply that some remember the events that take place in YOUR saves is all there to make the game feel like a test of your control. But with enough determination the toughest of resolves will give way to wanting something to break the feeling of repetition (the Genocide path.) Maybe it's because i first had thought there were multiple timelines that converge into one final conclusion--the "True" Ending--that I consider the Genocide path the REAL ending or the Gamer's Ending. It feels even worse as Frisk is not the one doing it--I'm controlling Frisk to do everything along that path. (Hence why I'm surprised you left out the Frisk and PLAYER/Chara bit.) I almost think the game is made to be intentionally repetitive to spark interest in the player to do what they know is horrible because it's different, and by not having achievements Toby can get away with having a punishment for completionists.

I especially liked how you touched on how the characters are living inside the game, and resetting the game resets all the actions of the characters living in the game world that have taken sweat and tears to achieve, something I haven't seen a ton of people talk about and is one of the most clever things in this game, honestly.

Flowey is a combination of Chara and Asriel. In the pacifist run Asriel gets to be its physical form, in the genocide run Chara gets to be its physical form. In the neutral run it looks like flowey hasn't been able to absorb enough souls to achieve an actual form.

I'm not sure I could ever truly become "undertale'd out"; having been playing games for 25 years, Undertale became my absolute favorite after finishing it and I don't see that changing anytime soon at all. I'll always love seeing awesome new fanart, music and videos about it, theories and blah blah.... That being said though, yeah, seeing enough of anything anywhere all the time can make you wanna... take breaks here and there. Especially since so much Undertale content just focuses on the same couple popular characters and ideas.. (ESPECIALLY SANS, and serious/depressed sans at that. Man, Sans, I love ya, buddy, but these fans need to calm down just a little bit lmao). I can totally understand even someone as obviously passionate about this game as you still wanting to move on, but I think we can agree that this game's going to sit there in our hearts as one of the great ones, right up there with stuff like the Earthbound/Mother series itself. And when we inevitably come back to play it again every once in awhile, we'll... make sure to do pacifist again, right? Groundhog Day effect isn't so bad if it's good stuff over and over, right....? ;_; P.S. this is a freakin' great video and the best Undertale analysis I've seen so far, by far. Great work, my dude!

Thank you so much for reminding me why I love Undertale. After almost having it ruined for me by a big chunk of the random with annoying mischaracterizations and endless talk of Gaster, its nice to see what really makes this a special game.

Nitro, I honestly couldn't agree with you anymore, even though you have skipped a few things that I'm assuming you didn't fully know, or just felt that it wouldn't be entirely important. But I honestly feel that what you've said is completely true, I LOVE Undertale and it has rung up my scale to the TOP tier of my favorite video games of all time (not THE best, but it's one of em').

Do people really get angry over that stupid contest, seriously? That best game forever thing, really? People even on a gameplay level games are different, you can't judge undertale on the same as zelda because they don't even function the same, the same way you can't judge fallout 3 against super mario bros. That contest is nothing but a popularity contest and getting angry over it is childish.

#NitroRad at 2:09 : The reason why the monsters were sealed underground was revealed on the plaques on the wall in the Waterfall area. Shortly before coming up to the statue with the music box inside. The plaques say that the monsters were sealed underground because the humans were fearful that the monsters could absorb the human souls and use the soul harvested power to terrorize or destroy humanity.

I remember that Gamefaqs poll. I had just finished UT and it honestly touched me in ways I hadn't felt for over 15 years. Once it became clear that clunky Ocarina of Time was set to take it AGAIN and Melee of all things kicked Chrono Trigger out, I furiously voted UT every chance I got. Mario World was a necessary sacrifice.

I find it amusing how very few of these videos mention what happens if you reload the game after Toriel's fight and go for an alternative route (or even the exact same one, if you killed hero). Sure, not everyone goes through that (unless they played the Demo, which only consists of the Ruins), but for me it was THE defining moment of the game. Many games give you choices, and some are more inventive than simply give you a list and saying "pick one". But very few notice when you make a choice and then savescum, whether to fix a mistake you regret, or just to see what would happen.

When the game first came out I watched a no commentary run completely blind, and Idk how it happened but my brain had blocked Flowey’s existence completely from my mind until he popped back up at the end of the Asgore fight. Idk if the person purposefully edited the Flowey scene after the Toriel fight out of their video or if I just happened to take a week+ to watch the playthrough after school and it slipped my mind, but the wtf moment from seeing that flower after only remembering it getting its ass beat by Toriel will never leave me. I honestly think if you don’t accidentally kill her, he shouldn’t show up after Toriel blasts him. (Aside from being referenced and you catching him following you sometimes)

I was a fan of undertale since playing the demo and would've backed it on kickstarter if i had a job at the time. I was certain the main game couldn't live upto the demo's potential but was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. That said, the fans and hype have made it over-rated, i hope that doesn't spoil it for too many people. (I do think it was the best written game of 2015, only witcher 3 comes close from what i played, but best game of 2015 would only be true if the competition sucked, and best game EVAR pushes it to absurdity) good to see time has passed enough that people are analyzing the game rather than saying "play it i can't say anything or i'd spoil it!"

I guess you could make a book adaption of undertale if it was a choose your own adventure book? Dying would be like, stumbling over some words and having to read the book again? IDK. undertale is one of my favorite games I ever played, and I first played it on the PC, but I first beat the game when I played on the switch.

I see Chara as less of a demon who steals your soul and ruins your game forever and more as karma coming to bite you in the ass. They did poison themselves with those flowers to free the monsters, after all. The endings you get with them are a reminder of just what you've done to their family. They could've been your family, but you ruined that chance. They're karma incarnate and karma is fucking pissed.

Ah, looking back at all of the videos praising this game is fun. I mean, I agree with a lot of this, but it's also just praising it to high heaven and acting like it's better than it was. A good example of this is the whole choice between bad stuff that done subtly thing. Tons of video games, especially RPGs have various choices that vastly impact the game. Heck, browsing through your videos alone, I found out more about Oneshot and OFF and they did a lot of stuff that was praised in Undertale for being unique.

The game meta approach was kinda done by Nier prior wherein to get the true ending, which is the only way to save a certain character too, you have to give your save to obtain it-- all of your saves. The game tries to talk you out of it as well. Also, file scumming Chara is the way to go.

if you ask me undertale dares you to do something you don't do in many games and if you don't do so you suffer and never get a good ending, it's like the dog scene in the movie the fly 2 do you kill it and put it to rest so it's suffering will end or do you let it keep suffering as you watch painful things to pick but this game shows what kind of person you are in what you pick.

I know I'm super late to the party, but, If any game series need a plot analysis, it's Super Giant's games. People are still at a loss for the plot for Transistor and even Bastion has a lot of unanswered questions. I wish someone would make a video explaining everything! I mean, there are a couple out there, but they don't answer nearly enough...
