Wow I saw at least 11 fish pull free from their hooks. They need better or at least sharper hooks. I always use the sharpest hooks on my trot lines it greatly improves your catch ratio. Great video, thanks for making it. It's good to actually see what's going on under the water.

those are circle hooks buddy. they neuter the effectiveness of a long line by making you use circle hooks to obey laws. that's what they did to us with pelagic long lines.

Love to know what kind of bait and hooks were used. Fish were biting "scratchy", nibbling but not committing but still a horrible hook up ratio. Wonder if it's a baiting issue where the baits are too frozen or covering the hook points or if the hooks just are wrong.

What happened to your hooks? How come almost every fish managed to spit the bait out? Did you use barb less or dull hooks? I think you need to sharpen the hook tip and reduce the bait size so it will expose the tip of the hook for easy cling. You could make 1 of 1 when you did it properly.

I remember when I worked on one of these boats in the Bering Sea out of Dutch Harbor and I secretly baited my tub with full squids. Each squid was around 18" and when we pulled in the line later on, we had a whole string (each string section was around 250-300') with giant colleron (sp?) around 40-70lbs ea. I woulda' got in trouble though if they caught me. The guy watching the lines go out saw the tub I baited and they just made a general announcement not to do that. One colleron was so big that when the gaffer was slingin' the big ones to his right, a small guy was standing there and it hit him in the chest knocking him flat on his back. He was yelling for help as this 70+lb cod was flopping on top of him. I was coiling incoming line right there and saw the whole thing. Pretty funny stuff. I just remembered; after we got those giant cod, other guys started baiting their hooks with larger pieces of squid and we got more of those giants. Certain buyers wanted the larger fish and the Japanese only bought the very small ones. But it was after more guys started using larger chunks of squid that they told us not to use so much bait. 40,000lbs of bait went pretty quickly on a boat like that.

In a lot of places government won’t allow you to use treble hooks or hooks with barbs. When we went to barbless hooks cut our catch down by 60 percent. So to make up we just have to set that many more lines

Better way of fishing than the super destructive beam trawlers. Also bycatch needs to be more heavily regulated and people found breaking the rules (which is almost every commercial fisherman in the world) should be banned from fishing for life.

doesn't look like the hook point's exposed. I believe as more fish eat away at the bait, you'll get more hook point exposure. At which point one unlucky fish will take the bait in its mouth, and the hook will do its job. Good for the customer, bad for the fish.

These are probably circle hooks. they take longer to hook a fish but they STAY on once they're hooked, even with a slack line. If you used normal J hooks, you would get hookups sooner but the hook hole would get bigger as the fish struggled to the point where just about every fish would drop off the hook when there's no tension.

Those lines r down 12+ hours we only saw 11 min I'm sure the hooks fill up over time maybe fish take some bait off and exposes more hook not sure but with that many fish u don't need a 1:1 hookup ratio
