As soon as the diver opened the hatch and the welder stared at the moon pool he said f no. From then on, Taylor trained its divers under Blackie's tutelage and it became a successful program.

Done this for some years along with other welding. I miss it. So peaceful down there. No one to hear complaining about this or that. That in itself makes it worth the risk of welding inthe guld underwater.

Question, I see you nudge the rod along with one hand, since it’s under water does the rod not get hot or do I just need better gloves?

I remember underwater welding in dive school still. When I was top side tender I recall the thick rust colored cloud of smoke that just hovered on the surface of the pond while the divers welded. Kinda cool yet disgusting all at the same time. But the welding part was pretty cool with all those tiny hydrogen bubbles making little explosions while you weld. Fun times.

Linglingjr not true. I know a few graduates personally from SBCC that went immediately into underwater welding jobs. It's one of the few schools around that offer such specialized training. Santa Barbara is known as one of the birthplaces of commercial diving. It's how we got those oil rigs out in the channel. Do your research before opening your mouth.

What are the stick rods made of because every time I see underwater welding the welding is done on rusty barnacle covered metal do you usually have to grind that off? Super curious about this!!

This is impressive for obvious reasons. But as a welder what impresses me the most is the body moment while treading water. This is comparable to trying to weld and walk at the same time.

FYI : these job's salary counts based on how deep it takes. Usually for an experienced underwater welder working at position about 300-1000 ft from sea level, there's about $800-$1200 earnings per day.

Welding that dog & using the wedge. So, same as above, just... wetter. Maintaing neutral buoyancy, whilst also keeping station, enough to do the job must be a work of art. Interesting. Hilariously, we in the u.K. call vertical down "washing"... appropriate! Thanks for posting. 👍

For those wondering about what these guys earn, this comment is for you. I just left the inland commercial diving field after 10 years (in and around the greater Chicagoland area). I worked for a union company. I worked pretty steadily, and my best year gross was $86k. Top pay scale was $39/hr in Illinois, $35 in Indiana. We only got per-diem if we worked over 80miles from our shop. Non-union companies paid their divers anywhere from $14-20/hr with no benefits. I can’t speak to what these offshore guys make right now, but a lot of the guys I worked with over the years did it and said they made around $20/hr in the oilfields. The people who make the really big money in this career are those who are willing to travel, and who can eventually get into saturation jobs. Not many people do. I’m making drastically more money now in topside pipeline construction than I did while diving. The union pipefitter welders make triple what the underwater guys did. Just speaking from my inland experience.

Talk about being focused! The guy has to use his flippers to stabilize him while stick welding. Fine motor controling both to keep the weld arc maintained.
