A musical adaptation of the film 'Une Histoire Sans Importance (A History Without Importance)' set against a specially extended version of the song 'Nightporter' by Japan. Both music and film were released in 1980. Adapting a forty minute film to an eight minute music piece required substantial re-editing to convey the elementary emotional content of the story without dialogue. In this format, no strict adherence to timeline was necessary and no explanation of places and events was required. To watch the film in full you can view it here: • Une Histoire Sans Impo...
The Film: written and directed by Jacques Duron, is set in a small French town in the late 1970s. It tells the story of friends Philippe and Claude, one an adolescent boy, the other a slightly older teenager, both on the cusp of sexual awakening in a climate of suffocating oppression and taboo. While Claude's feeling is one of exploration and curiosity, the slightly maturer Philippe is driven by intense conflicted passions - rejecting Claude while tormented by a desire for an emotional bond with him at the same time - resulting in his spiraling descent into despair and loneliness. The film is essentially a story of alienation, as the two protagonists try to navigate their feelings for each other against prevailing conventions and conflicted emotions. It does not have a happy ending.
The Music: Nightporter, a song by New Wave band of the late '70s, Japan. The vocalist is David Sylvian. The song was influenced by the works of French composer and pianist Erik Satie, known most notably for the Gymnopédie, and featured on the 1980 album 'Gentlemen Take Polaroids'. It was subsequently released as a single in 1982 and reached number 29 in the UK singles chart. The band split shortly afterwards and Sylvian has continued a successful solo career. For me, Nightporter seems a perfect match to convey the content and story of this film.
Lyrics:
Could I ever explain this feeling of love?
It just lingers on
The fear in my heart that keeps telling me
Which way to turn
We'll wander again
Our clothes they are wet
We shy from the rain
Longing to touch all the places we know we can hide
The width of a room that can hold so much pleasure inside
Here am I alone again
A quiet town where life gives in
Here am I just wondering
Nightporters go
Nightporters slip away
I'll watch for a sign
And if I should ever again cross your mind
I'll sit in my room and wait until nightlife begins
And catching my breath, we'll both brave the weather again
Here am I alone again
The quiet town where life gives in
Here am I just wondering
Nightporters go
Nightporters slip away
