I can absolutely confirm this test. I shot a deer at 125 yards with one of these out of my 18 inch Mk12 Clone rifle. Bullet entered, punched thru the first lung, hit the heart and then opened up and turned the heart and backside lung into mush, then leaving a 2 inch diameter exit wound carrying rib bone fragments with it.

Should be fine for a hog, that extra 2" will be good to penetrate the skin. I can tell you with the same Hornady bullet in a 308 and 168 gr at 400 yards drops a deer in 15 yards. Hopped twice and fell over. It was a quartering shot, entering about mid ribcage on the left side. While field dressing it, could not find an exit wound until I lifted up the right front shoulder and there it was.....a perfectly mushroomed bullet. Weight retention was 153gr. That's the 3rd year in a row, and the 2 previous seasons there were no steps involved, they fell where they were hit. Both of those were at 245 and 350 yards.

I've been very impressed with the Hornady 75 grain BTHP bullet in their .223 Match and Black ammo. I have used it with great success against the local Coyote population as well as the occasional Raccoon. It shoots nice, tight groups and is consistent in hot or cold conditions. I've only taken 1 deer with it so far with ho-hum results. The shot distance was 200 yards at an average size Michigan Doe. The entrance hole was a pinhole and the bullet did not exit. Both lungs were liquified. The Doe ran about 40 yards and piled up dead. There was no blood trail whatsoever. For open conditions, I have no problem using this ammo for Deer. In areas of limited visibility, thick cover, this Deer could have easily been lost with no blood to track. I might try the 5.56 version of this ammo since it's moving a bit faster. I'm getting about 2514 fps from my 16" barrel AR. At 200 yards, that velocity has dropped to roughly 2100 fps and is only delivering 740 ft lbs of energy. Ethically, I would not use this cartridge on Deer any farther than 200 yards. Do some 6.5 Grendel testing next... pretty please!

Hornady has 2 different 75 GR BTHP bullets. Their “T1” version is the one that has a BC of .395 or .391 (can’t remember exactly). Their “T2” version is slightly different and has a BC of .355. @calangel

I know how late this comment is, but here goes. A lot of people choose these types of bullets due to high BC and what they believe is higher retained energy at longer ranges. The problem is that a bullet needs a certain impact velocity in order for it to perform. Ballistic tips help to overcome this to some degree, but yeah. Generally speaking, in a given caliber and bullet design you want the bullet that will impact the target at the highest velocity. Sometimes this means passing up the top tier BC heavies for a medium weight bullet that still has a fairly good BC if the impact velocity at the target's distance isn't high enough. For 22 caliber, the heavy 70+gr bullets should perform within 22 caliber ranges unless they hit the wrong part of the animal.

Howdy, Diesel45! Good to hear from you. 75s and 77s are much longer than the 55s in XM193. Swapping those bullets would immediately lead to catastrophically high pressures. I just ran a test in Quickload to see what would happen. At nearly 90,000 PSI, the gun would probably just explode. To safely swap those bullets, you would have to dump (depending on the powder) roughly three full grains of powder.

This is an amazing review, dude! I am gonna hit sub in a second. So, at 4:37 , You should honestly hit the hog, or deer or w/e youre hunting, in the ear. The .223 is going at a good speed. If you can, try this exact bullet but with a 5.56. Im curious what the results will be. So, even though it is doing a good bit of damage, for a bullet not designed to do that, it is overall a 22 cal bullet. You may not see a lot of bleeding from a small hole. Soft tissue tends to close up and stick from the blood, so the entry hold may not bleed much. Thus, an ear shot would be best if you can. Im curious how the 77 gr sierra match kings will do from a 16 inch barrel at 5.56 pressures :) (hint hint). Great stuff!

I've seen a smaller boar about 180lbs run a good 100yds in brush after taking a 30.06 through the lungs an heart. The are insanely tough animals. You might have made a lethal shot on them but they just ran. Who knows...

Last hog I shot was with a 75 bthp. 200 yards with a red dot so I just aimed for a behind the shoulder shot. Ended up hitting shoulder blade so bad shot. But it still went through and deflected out through gut somehow. He ran about 30 yards and was found with his guts literally hanging out. I was pretty impressed as I usually use a .308

Bthp definitely don’t act like fmj...they’re known to violently fragment, the Sierra 77gr tipped match king is considered the gold standard in this regard...I’m wondering if maybe the untipped cavity is getting clogged with the thick hog fur/skin and making it perform fmj like in your results. I would give the 77gr tmk a shot. I would expect the tip to prevent clogging of the cavity, and if you check other gel tests like those made by “the chopping block” for the 77gr tmk, you’ll see why it’s considered the gold standard home defense round...it has unreal performance from .223

Match bullets do not typically perform like FMJ bullets, nor was this inferred as a means to get them approved for military use. All spitzer or pointed bullets have their center of mass towards the base of the bullet, which imparts a natural tendency for them to want to flip around and fly with their center of mass, their base, forward. This is why they require rifling to spin them, which gives them gyroscopic stability, like a well thrown football. The bullets will be stable in air, but not while traveling through a medium with more density than air, such as tissue. HPBT/OTM bullets typically have a pocket of air at the tip, which moves the center of mass further to the rear of the bullet, and increases the projectile's tendency to yaw when traveling through tissue. Whereas M193 will typically take 4 inches or so of penetration through tissue to yaw, M262 will typically yaw in half that distance. And whereas M80 will typically only yaw after 6 to 8 inches of penetration, M118LR will typically yaw in about half that distance. Because these bullets typically have thin jackets, they will reliably fracture and fragment at a much lower velocity threshold than traditional FMJ projectiles, which increases trauma and terminal effect at the expense of penetration. The military had good success in military shooting matches at Camp Perry with Sierra Matchking projectiles, so when the M118 sniper round they were using began to experience degradation in accuracy due to worn machinery, these projectiles were naturally sought as replacements to the 173 gr FMJBT round used in the now "Special Ball" round. There was some confusion over the nomenclature "Hollow Point Boat Tail," and how this applied to the Hague Conventions ban on ammunition designed to expand or flatten inside the body. The matter was brought before JAG to consider and expert testimony provided which showed the Matchking bullet clearly superior in accuracy and long range ballistics to the formerly match grade 173 gr FMJBT, and which demonstrated that the open tip was a product of manufacturing not designed to expand or flatten inside the body. Most FMJ bullets are "cup and core" projectiles in which the copper jacket is formed like a cup and the lead core in placed inside, then the bullet is pressed together, folding the jacket over the base of the projectile. This process leads to inconsistent bases which are sometimes not perfectly concentric. The base of a bullet and the crown of the muzzle are instrumental to achieving good accuracy because the bullet must exit the bore with a perfectly concentric seal for high pressure gases escaping behind it. To remedy this, Sierra, and other match bullet manufacturers, fold the jacket over the tip so that the bases are uniform and concentric. This is why the tip is open on these match bullets. Sierra, and other match bullet manufacturers also typically use thin jackets, again, so they can be made extremely concise and repeatable. JAG found that because these bullets were not designed to flatten inside the body, but rather to be accurate, that they did not violate the terms of the Hague Accords, and in the 1980s, there was a series of memorandums issued which approved the use of Sierra Matchking and other similarly designed match bullets for military use. However, to avoid further confusion, the military settled on the term "Open Tipped Match" to replace "Hollow Point Boat Tail."

I have a pretty good string of one shot kills on deer with a Colt 6960. I use this carbine for home defense and was curious about ammunition selection for this role. Since it is legal to hunt deer with a .22 caliber centerfire, I selected three loads to try; the 62 gr Barnes TSX, the 62 gr Federal Fusion MSR bonded JSP, and the 75 gr Hornady Superformance OTM. I shot two or three deer with each load. For a purely hunting projectile, the 62 gr TSX was the clear winner, and it was the only bullet that always exited, even after penetrating shoulders or taking quartering shots. The 75 gr OTM performed acceptably, but it didn't have the penetration, and I always felt obligated to pick broadside shots and place them behind the shoulder. Under these conditions, they were consistently lethal. But considering the limitations, this was my least favorite tested bullet for hunting use. The 62 gr Fusion MSR performed extremely well, and ended up being my choice for defense. All things considered though, all of these loads proved the 5.56 from even a 16 inch barrel is more than adequate for deer sized game at typical hunting distances. Not a single animal ran more than 50 yards from where they were shot, and none required a second shot. While I prefer my Aero Precision AR10 in .308 Win or my Rem M700 7mm Rem Mag, the 5.56 showed that it is up to the task if the shooter is willing to pick shots and keep distances reasonable, where the bullet has ample velocity to perform.

However, it does seem to be borderline too slow for ARs because even at hot charges it seemed to run pretty dirty and I was getting a lot of soot in the gas system. Much more than I get with AR Comp or actual RL15.
