She’s basically a black hole with legs. She and her brood aren’t literal spiders, but they resemble spiders in some ways, but they clearly have other non-spider characteristics like stingers and horns and the ability to speak. She’s basically a primordial goddess of the void and of unlight: a substance that exceeds mere darkness and is more like a black hole, but that she can freely create and manipulate at her will. She makes webs out of black holes, from within herself. And she’s shrouded in unlight as well, so much of the time she would be practically invisible. It’s shown that Shelob also inherited the ability to make unlight webs, because it’s described that Shelob’s lair was so dark that it surpassed mere absence of light. Which is also why ordinary tools could not cut through such webs, only special weapons like fiery balrog whips and Sting. Shelob is also described as being only spider-like, not fully a spider - she has many spiderish features like multiple sets of eyes, a huge abdomen, and lots of limbs; but she’s also said to have horns, a long neck, a stinger like a scorpion or wasp, as well as speech and intellect (Shelob could speak and think like a sentient being; Gollum and Shelob had a relationship much like a worshipper and a deity). So yeah, this is a good video, but Ungoliant and her spawn are more interesting than just giant spiders. Ungoliant is a primordial entity from the Void, and her children are basically powerful chaos demons, not merely animals. Many adaptations miss this stuff, and make it seem like giant spider monsters are just a variety of Middle Earth wildlife - when in fact, Ungoliant was a being so mighty she almost ATE the Middle Earth equivalent of Lucifer/Satan, and her children are incredibly ancient, powerful spirits as well. They appear to be some of the only beings not created by Iluvatar or any of the Valar, so in a sense one might say Ungoliant is the equivalent of Tiamat or Erebus/Nyx: a terrible being feared even by the gods, born directly out of the Void of chaos, not created by the creator god but appearing from out of the primordial dark beyond creation. Ungoliant is essentially the chaos/dark counterpart to the order/light of Eru - so basically, she’s Anti-God. Lucifer is just a created being that rebelled: but Ungoliant is like the Yin to Eru’s Yang. She’s the evil Goddess to Eru’s good God. Eru creates, she devours. Eru is male, she is female. Eru brings order out of chaos, Ungoliant brings chaos out of order. She’s not the Devil, she’s not even the antichrist - she’s worse. She’s Goddess - she’s the Anti-God.

Exactly! I've been reading The Silmarillion and I was extremely interested by her Unlight webs/vomit. Not only was she a being that originated from the dark, she MAKES the dark. But not just the absence of light; her Unlight is a thick darkness that chokes out all other light. Which is what makes Galadriel's vial of the Light of Elendil so special in Shelob's lair.

Never heard about this, though you've made me curious! Googled a bit and came across these passages: Tolkien letter 163: And if that has anything to do with my being stung by a tarantula when a small child, people are welcome to the notion (supposing the improbable, that any one is interested). I can only say that I remember nothing about it, should not know it if I had not been told; and I do not dislike spiders particularly, and have no urge to kill them. I usually rescue those whom I find in the bath! Quote from a talkshow: I put in the spiders largely because this was, you remember, primarily written for my children (at least I had them in mind), and one of my sons in particular dislikes spiders with a great intensity. I did it to thoroughly frighten him and it did! Still pretty interesting!

Some say Ungoliant was the most powerful evil thing ever to exist. She fed on light itself and when Melkor broke the promise of the silmilarion crystals of light from the sun tree that Ungoliant wanted, she wrapped him in webs of darkness and if he did not scream in terror she would of devoured him easily. It took all 7 known balrogs to save their master and only then Ungoliant was not destroyed but instead fled away. My honest opinion Ungoliant is the most powerful evil force in all of the silmiliarion and LOTR combined.

To me, Ungoliant sounds like a physical animal version of a black hole - darker than darkness itself, expanding as it devours, and inevitably collapsing under its own mass. If that’s the case, then maybe Ungoliant is still alive (and can’t actually die), but she’s just reverted back to an early “rebirth” stage after her self-destruction, like a cycle.

It's likely that Ungoliant devoured herself, imo, but because she is a primordial being, she couldn't "die" like other mortal creatures. I believe her true form had returned to the darkness but was unable to reform due to her hunger becoming too large to satiate. Who knows, maybe she feeds off of Melkor in the abyss, as similar to Prometheus' penance. But instead of an eagle, Ungoliant devours the shining innards of Melkor, now trapped with his former ally.

I always loved the concept of Ungoliant as being an incarnation of the void itself! Maybe part of the disruption caused by Melkor in the Songs of Creation is that the void itself became a corrupted spiritual force that attracted dark and fallen spirits like Ungoliant! These spirits would be in opposition to the light of Arda and would desire to destroy it! I am inclined to believe that Ungoliant was actually cast out of Arda and back into the void by Eru Illuvatar to stop her from further infesting his creation!

She has two or three origins and so about her fate: - Origins: She came from the Void Out of Arda, was the Primordial Night itself or was simply a Maia (to me the lattest theory seems more as a disguise she said to hide her true nature, as well some late attempts of Tolkien to shed some sense on her, but it actually works counterproductive as she is totally more important than a simple Maia, and Melkor rellies a lot oddly on her help instead of choosing the already probed loyalty and devotion of Sauron, a Maia himself too!!) - Fate: She "devoured herself", she still lives deep in the farthest South of the world (the Dark Lands) or she was killed sometime uknown by Earendil during one of his travels around the world as the Star with the Silmarill, reaching the South then. Maybe all the three theories could be connected, but either way, it makes more sense to have her a more unneasy end than just being killed (Having her still alive for the Dagor Dagorath time seems to be a more brillant idea!)

Is it possible that Tolkien considered doing a story where Ungoliant was the villain? Especially since he implied she was stronger than Morgoth at one point?

You're actually right! In one of his earlier versions of 'the Lost Tales', Tolkien had Éarendel (who's a very important character in the Middle-Earth mythos) meet her and slay her. However he decided not to do this and changed it later on.Also we need to consider that Ungoliant wasn't necessary stronger than Morgoth. I think she managed to overcome him for 2 reasons: Firstly she had the element of surprise Secondly she had just consumed the light of the two trees and the gems which empowered her immensely (and we're not sure whether that powerup was permanent or lost with time)

Sequel to LOTR; Ungoliant's return, along with the 2 blue wizards... Maybe the 2 blues encountered Ungoliant and she corrupted them. If Tolkien definitely wanted Ungoliant to be dead, he would have stated for certain Ungoliant had perished instead of "some said..."

Some may ask how the Balrogs managed to beat off Ungoliant. The easy answer being they are demons of shadow and flame. Their fire burns both web and flesh while the shadow is something that would do nothing to help fend off Ungoliant's hunger. In other words, they're off the menu and cause extreme levels of pain.

I notice that the general consensus here on this video and in the comments is that Ungoliant was a being that formed from darkness itself, but the idea I got from The Silmarillion was that she was a corrupted Maia (see the quote below). Also, the idea that she formed from darkness to me seems to clash with Tolkien’s assertion that evil can’t create, but only corrupt. "The Eldar knew not whence she came; but some have said that in ages long before she descended from the darkness that lies about Arda, when Melkor first looked down in envy upon the Kingdom of Manwë, and that in the beginning she was one of those that he corrupted to his service. But she had disowned her Master, desiring to be mistress of her own lust, taking all things to herself to feed her emptiness; . . .”

Seeing the existance of primordial beings in Middle-Earth, can other creatures such as the watcher in the water be one?

I think, with Tolkien being Catholic, that Ungolient was a personification of Sin itself. It only devours, corrupts, and spreads darkness. And it only multiplies over time when left unchallenged. It’s webs ensnare you until you are completely devoured, and all the light within you is consumed by darkness. Just a thought! 😀

Ongloliant seems like the literary counter to illuvitar she's is from the dark/space like illuvitar and according to the books evil can only twist or corrupt, like CONSUME. But Light/Illuvitar creates.

Ungoliant was a tremendously powerful character I wonder if she was purposefully left to one side to possibly provide an additional threat to Middle Earth in the 4th or further ages Very different to Melkor, the Valar and probably closer to the Watcher in the Water As a primordial being, it's difficult to see anyone being able to overcome her permanently except another Primordial After her retreat from the battle with a Melkor and her Balrogs, perhaps she was slightly weakened and moved into procreation - perhaps she diminished during this period, or spread her essence into her siblings .... seems most likely she would ultimately return to the primordial realm if she couldn't maintain her appetite As earlier comments, Professor Tolkein definitely had a bad experience with a spider, and created two truly awesomely evil Giants, Ungoliant and Shelob

@GeekZoneMT
7 жыл бұрын
Well realistically the Silmarils contained some of the light of the trees of Valinor (Which she had poisoned and consumed already), so probably not much, she'd have grown somewhat stronger, though I don't think it would be anywhere as significant as the powerup she got after consuming the light of the Two Trees.

Only Led Zeppelin as far as I know, quoting from this Rolling Stones article: www.rollingstone.com/music/news/ramble-on-rockers-who-love-the-lord-of-the-rings-20121213 Led Zeppelin: Zeppelin are probably the best known Lord of the Rings heads in rock & roll. The narrator of their 1969 classic "Ramble On" finds himself in a very bizarre version of Middle Earth - a land where Mordor appears to be a great place to meet beautiful women, and Gollum and Sauron are more interested in fighting over the narrator's girlfriend than getting their hands on the One Ring. Aside from this weirdness, it's clear that Jimmy Page was a huge Tolkien fan, as the opening lines of "Ramble On" paraphrase a poem that Tolkien wrote in the Elvish tongue of Quenya. Led Zeppelin went on to reference their favorite fantasy series in two songs from 1971: "Misty Mountain Hop" (named for the place where Bilbo Baggins and his dwarf pals spend some time in The Hobbit) and "The Battle of Evermore" ("The ring wraiths ride in black/Ride on!").

The Silmarillion would be impossible to make as a movie (too long of a time frame and too many main characters), only a series (like Game of Thrones) could give it justice except the special effects required would dwarf the Lord of the Rings and GoT.

@GeekZoneMT
6 жыл бұрын
I think overall she isn't, as it seems her strength depends on how much and what she consumes. After consuming the gems that they stole, she didn't manage to overpower him, though I'm not sure whether she'd have been able to do in her 'unpowered' state. It is quite interesting to think about though

She did overpower Melkor, though. It was only with the help of the Balrog Brigade that he was able to escape her webs. Melkor might have been more powerful than Ungoliant (even in her "powered-up" state) at the beginning before he wasted his power by corrupting the land, but at this point in the story his only advantage over her was that he had an army to back him up.

Yes though Ungoliant seems to be an exception to this, as the Void seems to be something else entirely that (probably) wasn't created by Illuvitar, and thus doesn't follow this rule
