The selector wheel on mine went stiff. At first the one finger method didn’t work and later I just couldn’t turn it without fear of breaking something. I only use this a few times a month. I disassembled things like you did but then also lifted out the contact wheel, unsnapped the white spring bar, and extracted the knob. I could see places where the plastic or rubber rubbed between parts. I applied dielectric grease at these places, cleaned the PCB and applied fresh lube there too. It went back together fine and the one finger operation was restored.

I really like the size and features of this meter but after 1.5 years of light DIY use (once per month average) the settings wheel has become flaky. I've only noticed it in amp and capacitance mode so far but the readings will go to zero or fluctuate wildly until I turn the wheel very slightly. Unfortunately the problem returns randomly even if I don't move the wheel again. This makes amp readings especially difficult because opening and closing the jaws often jiggles things enough to trigger the problem again. I disassembled it to find dark streaks along the paths where the copper sweeps touch the silver contacts on the circuit board. I suspect this is fragments of oxidation perhaps allowing current to pass between contacts that shouldn't be connected. I wiped it clean and the meter works flawlessly again but the wheel grinds so I need to purchase dielectric grease or electronics lubricant to replace what I wiped off. If things had been gold plated I assume this wouldn't have been a problem. Also, getting DC amp readings correct is pretty fiddly. You must hold the jaws right next to what you want to measure, press zero repeatedly till it stays near zero, then clamp and take a reading without rotating the meter. Rotating causes the reading to change significantly even if the meter is not near wires. I compared it to a Fluke 325 and the Fluke doesn't seem impacted by rotation. Once you zero it, it tends to stay zeroed and readings replicate more reliably. The Fluke's larger jaws do make it more of a pain to get it around the wire you want in smaller projects. Both meters do give similar readings on any particular wire.

Hi Daniel. Need your expertise urgently. I bought a new chinese "cheap" clamp meter - MT-266 - and everything seems to work except the clamp probe that does not give any reading. Could you please help with some suggestions? Do I need to crack it open and fix any device to get a reading on the clamp function? Thanks.

I have to wonder if you are trying to measure AC or DC current. The meter you mentioned looks like a traditional clamp meter that inductively couples to the circuit. It acts like a transformer, but only works with AC currents. This Uni-T uses a hall-effect sensor and measures the intensity of the magnetic field around the wire. Has to be zeroed or nulled every time you use it, but it works with DC currents too. I don't know if that's your issue, or if something else is going on, you could just have a lemon... There are also a few other catches if this is your first time with a current clamp, things like splitting a two conductor cord and only measuring one wire so the two don't cancel each other out. But other than comparing with another meter, if only one range was dead i might start by checking the selector switch, or since this is for the current mode, the connections to the pick up coil on the clamp. Keep in mind that you may have to trust this meter too keep you safe when poking around with lethal voltages and currents, have to trust any modifications you make too. These Uni-t meters are cheap, and I think this model is pretty solid. Might be worth considering if you end up with a refund from that first clamp meter

Thanks Daniel for the prompt reply. I am using the clamp in both ac and dc circuits. It simply doesn't give any reading at all. I got some light from your suggestions and will try the clamp differently. Then I'll fall back to you for further query. Thanks!

I have this clamp meter how however I’m getting different results every time I zero this unit depending on where I zero it . If I click zero near the source I get a more accurate reading ? Is that how your Supposed to use the Zero function when reading Dc on a car battery ?
@dvanborkulo
4 жыл бұрын
Yeah, you want to zero as close to where you are going to measure as possible when dealing with DC amps, especially if you are measuring small values. If it's something you can easily turn on and off you could even clamp the wire under test and zero while it's off. With DC current any magnetic fields will affect the reading, so Earth's magnetic field and any ferrous metals can affect the reading as you move

Great video. I’ve just received one of these devices and notice that when I place it in the 2A current range and change to DC mode, I get a reading of ~250mA before zeroing, with no wire in the clamp. The instructions do state the device should be zeroed before taking measurements, but I’m just wondering if this behaviour is normal?

Measuring current with a clamp you actually measure a magnetic field. For AC no problem but for DC the magnetic field of the earth comes in view. That is the reason you have to zero before DC current measurement.
@BrassLock

+Andre Post : Well that's a very interesting bit of information, thanks for that. Michael Faraday and his co-experimenters many decades ago developed the idea of using galvanometers in the vertical orientation as Dip Meters to measure the Earth's magnetic field. So maybe we can continue that experiment with the modern digital version when we have spare time.

As far as the NCV, instead of just being beep or no beep, the buzzer beeps faster and more lines fill up on the display as the AC field gets stronger. A more linear response vs the binary response of some other non-contact voltage testers.

General question: On a DC clamp meter, does shielding around the wire influence the measurement?
@nitinkumar29
4 жыл бұрын
If that shielding restrict magnetic flux then it will affect the measurement. Generally, they always have offset and you have to take that into account before taking measurement, either some known offset value need to be saved and deducted or you have to reset offset. Not an easy sensor to work with, in homes we have wires and magnets around us.

+HoopDub Not a lot of room to spare but yes, just measured 16mm(0.63in) with the jaws fully opened. This is the kind of tool that will take an automotive headache and turn it in to a problem you can track down in a few minutes, definitely a good reason to have a DC clamp meter.

I am looking for a clamp meter i can use for washers dryers auto and small electronics like tablet and laptops would this one do all that ??
@dvanborkulo
5 жыл бұрын
The 100 amp range should be enough for household dryers, most I've seen are 30-50A. This thing is nice and sensitive on the low range too. I bought mine for pretty much the same scale of projects that you are talking about, and the option for DC current measurement is nice on small electrics. With the low range you could even get a pretty accurate reading on something as small as the cooling fan in a laptop. There are other options around, and the limitation i imagine running in to would be the smaller jaws on this, but i still think it's the best bang for the buck. They are even cheaper now than when i recorded this video, just watch out for the unscrupulous seller's trying to pass off a 210a as a 210e

My UT210E show 233ma current with nothing connected on DC before I zero it out. I think it should not do this crap? Once zeroed it shows current anything but the same as Agilent DMM. 0.081A ut210e 76.1mA Agilent The voltage is 1.599V for 1.5AAA, Agilent shows 1.601. Very good. @dvanborkulo
8 жыл бұрын
There are a few versions of the UT210 and the E model does not measure frequency. It looks like they left mentions of the display segments for frequency in the manual though. The 210C and D have frequency measurement, but only the D and E models measure DC current. On top of that, the 210D only goes down to a 20A range, the 210E has a 2A and goes all the way down to the milliamp(±2% and 8 counts). For me measuring frequency wasn't a concern but I definitely wanted the more precise current range. Here's the manufacturer's page for the UT210 series: www.uni-trend.com/Productslist.aspx?ProductsCateID=773&IntroCateId=773&CateID=773&CurrCateID=773

8 жыл бұрын
+Виктор Максимов Yes. I've compared it to my other RMS meter and the readings are in line. The manual lists the AC Volts range as fairly accurate between 45 and 400Hz. The AC Amps range is spec'd for 50 to 60Hz. Both are listed with a 3% error factor for crest factors around what you see on normal mains power, but the error does increase when the waveform is really out of whack (7% when the peak to RMS is at 3:1). I found a copy of the manual here: goo.gl/GnBbkB It has the detailed info.
