That last little segment in the film, I'm so glad it was included even in that damaged quality because it gave such a lovely glimpse into what an ordinary neighborhood might have looked like. The children are adorable. I love how they keep standing still and posing, seemingly not used to the concept of "moving pictures". The bicycle is cool as well! Such small wheels. But my favorite is the houses. All those old wonderful houses with porches.

The Eugene Fields school at 1:14 in the film was in Silverton, Oregon, near Salem, Oregon. I found a photo of it in the Salem newspaper from 2018, announcing that the school, built and opened in 1921, was to be torn down. That is a bit of a clue, perhaps, about the origins of the home movie.

The 1920s seemed like such a great decade. Sadly these people were going to face the Great Depression and then World War Two.

Wow -- for the first 3/4 or so, the picture quality is excellent! Very few of the usual scratches, jumps, etc. on film this old. I, too, marvel that even the youngest in this vid are likely no longer with us. Think: will all documentary evidence of our own lives eventually be reduced to being the subject of guesswork by strangers decades hence -- if it even, somehow, comes to their attention?

@jhillst I'm not sure of the exact date, but I have an advertisement for a home movie camera from 1921. And when 16mm was first introduced in 1923, it made home movies much more accesible. Hope I could help.

That's Eugene Field Elementary School in Silverton, Oregon. Whoever made these home movies must have been fairly affluent. Home movie equipment was uncommon and very costly back then. Only those with a lot of disposable income could afford this high tech luxury.
