Union Pacific FEF-3 4-8-4 844, has the exclusive distinction of being the only steam locomotive in the United States to have never been taken off of its original owner's active roster.
In 1962, the locomotive was numbered 8444 to not interfere with a new fleet of GP30s that the railroad was ordering at the time. The engine's popularity increased more and more throughout the 60's and 70s, to the point where older fans from that era still call the engine 8444, 30 years after the engine was returned back to its original number.
The program consists of 8444 running in Wyoming, Utah, and Colorado. Of note is the engine on Ross Rowland's Golden Spike Centennial Limited, which was a precursor to the famed American Freedom Train of 1975 - 1976. The sequences that follow are of the engine on a caboose hop back to Cheyenne, and of the engine on a fantrip in 1974, including leading the San Francisco Zephyr.
Enjoy this nostalgic look back on a true living legend!
